Raise the flame shield: Your "controversial" gaming opinion.

I don't have many controversial opinion in terms of what most game enthusiasts that post on the net hold dear, but there are a couple.

1. Half-Life.....meh. So for full disclosure, I played and beat the PS2 version, which by all accounts was a competent port by Gearbox. I had no issue with playing the game on a controller (don't use m/kb anyway) and the game looked fine for its time. The speech had that low sampled "tinny" sound but that was the only technical flaw.

Personally I just don't like the pacing of the game, it feels too rushed for my taste and I always felt like my next objective was little more than something to just push me out of there. In terms of story, it makes sense but I felt like I didn't really accomplish anything. The innovative in game storytelling was also real dated and transparent when I played it. the game can't help that but it didn't impress. I felt HL2 was just much better on every level

2. Skies of Arcadia....most overrated JRPG by gaming enthusiasts. I term it that way because the average gamer or fan would probably feel that way about FFVII. Anyway, I get that the game has a decent sense of adventure, but almost everything else is average. Characters....flat, battles.....slow and boring, ship battles....even slower, encounter rate.....pretty fucking high, story.....lulz, it was the same shit that was cliche on SNES. Its a good game but I'll never get why people hold it in such high regard.

EDIT: In terms of positive flameworthy opinion, I really liked Bloodrayne 2. I thought it was the most fun melee based action game since the original DMC. Its not as technical as some of the others, but I enjoyed it a lot (for the PS2 era, just to be clear).

-I think western studios can't make good DMC-style action games. Their combat mechanics are often just a poor imitation of their eastern counterparts. Hitting enemies in God of War games is like hitting stuff made of soft foam. And the worst offender is: they don't track score or rank you based on how well you did. Look at the 3 greatest action series: Bayonetta, Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden. What do they have in common? Yep, they have a scoring system.

-Conversely, Japanese studios can't make decent First-Person Shooters.

-There is no such thing as a good game with bad graphics. The opposite can be true, though.

-I hate smartphones. Possible reason: envy, and my friends glued to the screen everytime I see them. If you're going to invite me to the beach/movies/junk food at least have the courtesy to put that thing in your pocket, but nooo what are they doing? tweeting/FB/Foursquare/etc, all. the. freaking. time. That's just rude.

Why do I want to do all that stuff when my computer does it better? a mobile phone should do just 1 thing: dial other people to talk to them. I have a Sony Ericsson w200i and it having a music player on top of the telephone features is already too much.

I think Halo sucks and is a total snore (post-Halo 2 that is, really liked that one). What else, Fable games sucks, spyro the dragon sucked way back when, I think that's all I got. Oh and oblivion sucks, but that's not weird since many others think the same. If you haven't noticed I have a problem with certain WRPGs. I dislike the soulless feel and the addiction to questing is annoying when the quests are repetitive which they usually are. Maybe it's just me though!

Wonko_C: System Shock 2, Planescape Torment, Diablo 2 and Baldur's Gate 2 were all ugly games when they came out. All fantastiy great representations of their genres

Totally agree with you on Halo. Though I think most people love it because of the multiplayer, and I've only played through the single-player campaigns.

I don't know about the other games but Diablo 2 and Planescape Torment were great looking, to me at least.

I should have said: I haven't ever seen a good game with bad graphics.

I'm going to say it... Shigeru Miyamoto is a has been that's riding the wave of success he had over a decade ago.

If the gaming industry had a Spielberg, I'd bet a large number of gaming "experts" would say it's him. The thing that bothers me most is that he doesn't really seem to take risks with his newest projects. All of his stuff is thematically similar, cartoons and goobledy-guck fantasy stuff that's either a rehash or a slight evolution on a proven formula. For all the praise he gets for good to great Mario games, I find it annoying that he's not trying to make new experiences that branch out from the comfortable and familiar. If gaming is going to have a figure that's embellished or deified, I would much rather see a Ken Levine, Will Wright or Tim Schaffer mentioned before Miyamoto. I say this as someone that has Link's Awakening as one of my most memorable gaming experiences ever.

You are the only other person I met that really likes the look of Diablo 2, then. *brofist*

Will Wright hasn't really been relevant in a while (where the hell is my Sim City 5???), Tim Schafer crafts interesting settings and dialogue but the game part is usually weak, and what has Ken Levine really done apart from Bioshock (that most people on NeoGAF claim is massively overrated, I don't know I only played the demo when it came out). Although like you I wish Miyamoto would make some new "core" series, hopefully that whole move to get back into a production role will bear some interesting fruit.

I cited those guys because they are pushing the medium forward in a way that interests me with mechanics, story telling, and mature themes. I'll take that any day over brushing a new coat of paint on something we've played multiple times over on multiple generations of hardware.

Miyamoto's personal projects this generation have mostly been the Wii _____ games, he really hasn't been deeply involved in Mario and Zelda, etc., that much in the last two generations except as a supervisor and go-to guy for ideas.

-The Wii. Come on now, Wii? With that little controller? Man, that looks like a dildo; I aint trying to play my games with no dildo. Maybe if the game is like, Wario Ware...shove it up your own ass games. I dunno if there's any minigames where you have to shove it up your own ass. Come on now, the Wii? People tryin to say the PS3 copied the Wii with the motion sensor? I don't give a fuck, shit, you know what the Wii should try to copy? They should try to copy how to get good games from the PS3. Everyone knows its the PS3 that's got the best games. Know what I mean? I mean on the Wii you got Legend Of Zelda, where you walk around with the little bitch, and his little bitch-ass sword and little shield and he just goes "ha! ha!"; come on, who wants to play that shit? I gotta shoot some niggas.

Most Valve games are mediocre.

Resident Evil 4 was meh.

Zelda sucks, with few exceptions.

Nintendo is shit, Reggie Files Aime makes Brian Gumble look like Malcolm X.

Bethesda is awful.

Witcher 2 GOTY

Consoles are a plague

Witcher 2 GOThatY

huh?

So sayeth the Sage, Chad Warden.

- I hated the story of Final Fantasy VI. Terra in particular is one of the worst FF characters ever IMO. Gameplay was great, though.

- Final Fantasy Tactics is the best FF game, IMO.

- Final Fantasy VIII was also one of the best FF games.

- The Last Remnant (on PC) was one of SE's best games.

- I like the NES Ninja Gaiden games WAY better than the Xbox ones.

- BioWare games were never good with the exception of Dragon Age: Origins.

- Phantasy Star Universe was awesome after the expansion pack and I'd still be playing it over any other MMO right now if it were still on PC.

- Tales games and Star Ocean games > most other RPGs.

Now the thread is descending into self parody.

Video games are generally getting worse every year. The good video games of a typical year are only good because they keep a few of the elements that gamers used to take for granted in video games and are now rare.

A good example of this is Skyrim. By all measurements it's a dumbed-down, streamlined Morrowind with prettier graphics. To make things worse, the terrible combat system has barely improved since Morrowind, even though two random people in Turkey developed a better combat system in Mount & Blade. Yet it gets heavy praise just because it dares to do what most video games don't even think about anymore — it leaves a lot of things to the player's imagination and lasts longer than 10 hours.

Nintendo consoles and handhelds are for little kids and anybody over the age of 14 who owns one should be embarrassed. Fuck Mario games. He's a fucking plumber, I played that shit when I was 6 years old, fucking retire him already.

Console video games will be essentially dead in 10 years. By that point PC and mobile devices will be so powerful that their will be no reason for a "console". However, arcades will make a big comeback with 3d immersion technology too expensive for homes. ~10 years after that the technology will be cheap enough again for home console/immersion videogames will make a comeback.
And Nintendo will still be making fucking Mario games.

apart from nintendo, old capcom, and old sega japan fucking sucks

Demons Souls is probably the best game of this generation. And that's because it plays like an old school game- hard, deep, and rewarding. Unlike these bullshit CoD wannabe games with their shitty "campaigns" and their shitty matchmaking online, and their stupid "unlocks" and "XP", and all these kids today that like these shitty game are idiots.

The opportunity to be the first sacrifice to my lord that's what!

Or I could bake you some cookies or something.

It would be an honor. Unless you know a really good recipe for ginger snaps. No, never mind--keeping the cher urthora from halsthing flough is much more important than cookies.

It's funny how posts like these are usually an attempt at acting like an adult when really they just make you sound like a child.

The Nintendo 64 was a piece of shit and not a single 3D game on it holds up today aside from Mario 64. In fact, that whole early era of 3D (ended with dreamcast level polygonal graphics or PC equivalent) was shit and non-2D games for ps1/saturn/whatever were almost all complete shit as well. Also, polygonal graphics on the DS are all similarly trash and the system should've had 2D games only.
