But wouldn't both sides be happier if America split south/north? The south would get all the Republican policies they want, and the north would get all the Democrat policies they want.

The north has been struggling to prevent the south from becoming a third world country for 150 years.

So the Republicans are the party of the south, and Democrats are the party of the north? What was the point of keeping America one country after the civil war if both sides continue to be at war politically?

I wouldn't go that far. This political divide is a pretty recent thing, and actually originated in the 1980s. Before that, Democrats and Republicans won states all over the map. This political polarization is a very recent thing.

As for Republicans being the part of the South, that's fading pretty quickly. Virginia, North Carolina and Florida swung for Obama in '08, and could do so again. Texas and Arizona may turn solidly blue within the next 10 years.

If Republicans aren't careful, they won't be winning another national election for decades.

Republican ideology has been shifting further and further right in an attempt to motivate voters.

Are you saying that the Republicans are moving so far right that even the south will start to find it too much?

No, the demographic change (Hispanics + Young Voters + North to South migration) will continue to benefit Democrats until the Republican party changes.

He's saying the South is going to be a lot browner ten years from now.

I hope Gingrich wins SC, it will keep the race interesting, hopefully Santorum would drop out, then Romney will really feel the pressure.

Honestly, hasn't everyone entertained the idea of Texas seceding as a good thing, conservative or otherwise?
I was half joking. I can see where the people who are serious are coming from, but they probably aren't aware of a lot of the social and economic benefits they'd have to give up. For the rest of the country would be pretty bad as most of the the country's domestic oil refinement is in Texas.

Do you guys think there is any chance that any of the candidates drops after SC?

Gingrich's success (so far) here will ensure he stays.
Romney Obviously.
Santorum still thinks he might have a chance in the bible belt.
Paul will stay just to preach his message, all he ever does in elections, that's his entire point to running.

I think everyone else is gone.

He's saying that immigration from Mexico, coupled with the Republican party's harsh (and occasionally borderline racist) immigration policies will be changing the voting demographics in some southern states.

edit: beaten

Santorum's not dropping out - he might be the VP pick for Romney, which is all the more reason to stay in. They had a quite a few "I respect your position" exchanges tonight.

...everyone else is already gone.

Santorum will drop out after/if he gets 4th in SC.

God I would love it if Gingrich won the nomination. As a democrat that is basically our collective wet dream at this point. He is profoundly unlikable. Women and moderates simply will not vote for him. Hell, even his own party wanted him out by the end of the 1990's.

If Santorum truly wanted or thought he could be Romney's VP choice, he'd stay in to splinter the anti-Romney vote away from Gingrich while maintaining a level of decorum with Romney in messaging and in these debates.

It could be a smart move.

Pretty much, and its mostly because of rapidly changing demographics. The conservative Republican message from the 1950s is a pretty hard sell to a more diverse generation of 21st century Americans who view themselves as part of a global culture.

Romney needs a conservative Christian on the ticket and Santorum has (though I think he's a douche) made himself more credible over the last month.

He's also a loser, and would look like a child next to Joe Biden. There are better options out there.

LOL, Joe Biden is a certified moron - Go Giants! Idiot. I don't know how anyone takes the guy seriously.

Sarah "fucking" Palin basically debated him to a draw.

Ya, Joe Biden was chosen as Obama's VP just to alleviate the fears that older white voters had about Obama being black. He chose the whitest oldest guy he could to counter his youth and blackness.

Well shouldn't the Republicans see this too? Why don't they take greater steps to come off less racist?

Actually they were heading in that direction under Bush. Bush did a decent job of reaching out to Hispanics, and avoided demonizing illegal immigrants. The problem is that the rise of the Tea Party movement, and the overreaction to Obama's victory has boxed the Republican party into a death spiral.

Obama's win certainly brought out a lot of racism on the Republican side. It was still a great opportunity for Republicans to denounce that part of their base and make themselves clearly against racism as a whole, but instead they've been fanning the flames because they think it'll get better voter turn out from their base. It's not like racists would vote for Democrats anyways, so the Republicans would still be able to keep racist votes without pandering to them.

You just have chills going up your legs when Palin was winking at you.

The only reason Palin seemed to do a good job there was the expectations from her were well extremely low at that point.

And all the post debate polls showed two things:
1. Biden won
2. Palin did better than expected

Nothing came out of that debate. Here's what people remember:

"Say it ain't so, Joe" and Biden spends a lot of time at a restaurant that closed 15 years ago.

People remember that plain is an unlikable moron and that some old white guy is behind obamas shoulder sometimes

Well they tried going the moderate route with McCain and they got crushed in the 2008 elections. They got in bed with the Tea Party people and they crushed the Democrats in the 2010 elections. So for Republicans, it seems that the path to victory is to go as far right as possible.

Biden isn't the smartest guy in the world, but he debated Palin with kid gloves. To imply Biden and Palin have a similar intellect is par for the course of your dumb equivalencies.
