Windows Phone 7 |OT|

The way I use my phone multitasking and notifications are not an issue. If an email pops up. I'm in the actual email in 2 seconds. Like most, my phone is pretty much always with me all the time so I don't have notificaitons stacking up. With multitasking I generally just need to go a few steps back so that not a problem either. It will be good for others if they improve these features, but they are barely a blip for me with regards to making me think of switching to other platforms.

Also MCD, yeah the update for the WP Central is quite nice. Love the live tile options they have now.

got one. still not a complete solution, especially if you don't want 20 different channels filling the chat buffer in. btw, does WP7 finally have an IRC client with proper SSL support?

Oh. I had no idea there were buffer issues. Back when i felt like i had the need to be online all the time i used screen :)

IRC7 claims to have SSL/TSL support, whether you find it proper or not is up to you.

This ones odd, because if you get a text, you can swipe the notification blue bar away to the right, almost as though its an action that will trigger something - but then it just stays in lock mode :/

If you tap a toast notification on the lock screen and then unlock the screen it takes you to that text for opens than app.

true multitasking means i can idle on IRC for hours on my phone while also doing other things, and when i come back to IRC, i'm still connected and can read what i missed.

I think it's funny how every time you enter this thread, you only talk about your need for an IRC client. Like it truly matters.

Srysly, really funny.

I haven't joked directly in this thread in ages, and the only people I quote to joke around with are brotkasten, cause he has a sense of humor.

I actually enjoy discussing differences between the platforms, but like claviertekky pointed out, in this thread it always turns into "I thought this was a WP7 thread lalala".
People seem to get abnormally upitty in this thread..seems like pretty good discussion to me.

Anyone else's marketplace live tile say there are updates available, but then when tapped, the marketplace doesn't display any available updates? Then when I go back to the home screen, the tile says there are no updates available. Does this a couple times a day.

He also needs a way to check his BBS and update his Geocities site. Don't knock him for having hobbies brotkasten. Srsly.

Yeah, I complained about this a few pages back. Very annoying. It did go away after a few days, though I was close to unpinning my market tile.

I personally still don't understand the main benefit of using apps like these. I use Fuse and tie into feeds for any news site I want. What's the appeal, especially considering that it's a pay app?
Same here, except I use Weave. I've tried dedicated apps before (Engadget, WPCentral, etc) but I always just go back to reading all of my news in Weave as it is much easier to keep track of everything I follow in one app, and Weave is generally very quick to update the feeds.

What gets me about stuff like this is not that I like to see the platform finally getting some good pub, but where has this all been? Hardware and software wise the Nokia phones aren't doing that much different than anyone with a launch Samsung or HTC phone updated with Mango. Did everyone just forget about WP7 until now, and they are finally getting a taste of the platform again?
I'd argue you're wrong on how this compares to other WP7 phones ... but that's already been gone over a few pages back.

Regardless ... this is a very specific 'award' ... it's for new phones that were shown at this specific CES. None of what you cite is related to that. This isn't a best phone of the year award, or best phone ever, etc.

I am all for real discussion about pro and cons of Windows Phone 7, but constant trolling and discussion that are completely about other OS should be in their own respective thread. Go back and and look at the last couple page.

And I am the one being uppity, may be you should read what you just post. As for Cop, all he has to said most of the time is trolling one liner yet my comment about keeping the thread on topic is somehow a fanboy rage.

I am more of a one or two sites for my WP news so an app for said site is awesome. Plus I have links for downloading apps being reviewed or written about directly from wpcentral among other things.

Hey, that works perfectly.

It's also a workaround to my other (minor) complaint. Seeing who "liked" something.

Isn't this impossible for any Facebook app? When I had my 3GS, it was the same thing. "Jane Doe and 3 others liked this...but you can't find out who those 3 others are!"

Man I wanted a Windows Phone for the longest time (for the slickness of the OS design), but now am really thinking about the next iPhone as my first smartphone, for the apps.

Really, a big part of the smartphone experience is the apps.

What kind of apps would you want to use?

I just read it costs between 18-24 euros to licence Windows Phone 7 (ZTE Spokesman). This isn't really the smartest way to gain marketshare if you ask me :/

Here's a few:

TweetBot
Reeder
Day One
Instagram
Instapaper
Calvetica
TweetSpeak
Camera+
Verbs
Instacast
CalBot
Due
Oink
Shoebox
Stamped
Omnifocus

I think I know three or four apps in that list and only really miss Reeder. Best Google Reader client of all time.

Some of those have functional equivalents either in the market place or built in:

E.g. Reeder can be replaced by wonder reader or nextgen reader

the built in calendar would probably negate the use of calverica

Most apps do have functional equivalents. The difference is in the quality and experience though.

Are there any good numbers for sold WP7 devices out there? I see something around 3-5 million from various guesstimates

I don't really see how a list of app names is going to help someone who has never had a smartphone.

he's the one asking.

TBH if you have a large investment in iOS apps already (like I do), I can understand some resistance to moving. But for a first time smartphone user, isn't it more important what you want to do with it, rather than what buzzwords are supported?

For iOS I don't find much functionally that WP7 doesn't do. Games are the main thing missing for me, but then I have an ipod touch so I have that covered.

The latest Facebook app update on iOS fixes that, and it looks identical to touch.facebook.com

You'd miss out on a LOT of the big games. If gaming doesn't matter to you at all, there are still quite a few social apps you'd miss out on...

For example, stuff like Instagram (photo sharing app) words with friends (there are alternatives, but WWF is VERY popular), scramble with friends, etc.

A big one for me is the Mint.com app, but you may not use that for budgeting.

You know, I guess it's easier to post your wants. Sometimes if the official app isn't there, there's a replacement. For example, my friend wanted Untapped and Stumbleupon. For Untapped, there is an app called "Mm Beer" but there is nothing for Stumbleupon.

I find myself using fewer and fewer applications on my phone these days. Whatsapp to occasionally check a thread I have going with some friends, and the odd game of Solitaire.

Bought so many games on my WP7 but I just don't have the time to really play them. I know "apps" are the buzzword right now, and I know some are well made, but I just don't see how anyone has time to use them. I suppose it'd be different if I were using an iPhone or something, where most of the functionality is lacking from the OS itself and bolted on with applications.

I'm pretty sure that within a couple of years, all three platforms will cover the main needs well enough that you wouldn't use that as a deciding factor. Either through apps or through mobile websites.

Games may still be an issue, but I'd expect most of the major publishers to be releasing on all three too. iPhone happens to have a massive lead out of the gate

There is a core set of apps I use, there are others, but these are my favorites
Weather (lots of good ones to choose from, I like Amazing Weather and WeatherLive)
Fuse
BBC Mobile
Prime TV
Sports Now
My Encyclopedia (great Wiki app)
imdb and flickster

95% of apps are garbage on all platforms imo. Even with my iTouch I was over a lot of the apps quickly. WP has enough games that I'm not bored if I feel like playing a game.

I was in the same position recently. I was in the market for a new phone and was originally going to get a droid or iphone but decided to try a windows phone first since A) I already knew what to expect from android/iphone after working on them and B) it was a smaller investment ($30 vs $100 for the other 2). Honestly I'm not having any regrets so far.

While this is true, I can't find much on the other ecosystems that I really miss on Windows Phone. The main apps (or similar options) are already on WP as it is so I never feel like I am missing anything. Games would be the only exception for me, but I have more games on my Focus than I have the time to play as it is.

I find games to be overrated on a smartphone platform. The core functions like phone, text, and e-mail need to be absolutely solid. All the rest are sprinkles on top.

I returned an iPhone 2G because I found the handset ear piece too soft to my liking as I can barely hear what the other person said. I don't know if this issue has been resolved on the newer iPhone models.

I barely used apps on my HTC Desire and now I barely use them on Lumia 800.

The apps I use the most atm are BBC News Mobile, 7pass, Boxfiles for Dropbox and weatherlive, outside of that the majority of my time is spent in the web browser and it was the same on my android phone.

Games are the only thing I find lacking when I compare my phone to my friend's iPhones. I was previously an android user and I don't think I could ever go back now after using wp7.

The platform has it's issues of course but that's true of all of them.

My main concern right now is that my upgrade is in April and I see nothiny yet that would provide me with a significantly improved experience or hardware. Not entirely a bad thing, omnia has held up well
