Winter 2012 Anime Thread of Roundcats Up in This

I'm up to Episode 13 and a few things are on my mind, though they are a bit superflouous:

- Why does Araragi perv so hard on Mayoi? :lol
- Kanbaru is fucking awesome.
- I get the feeling that class rep chick is final boss tier.

But beyond that, I'm kinda confused a little about something. What is this show supposed to be? Like I enjoy it, but I really don't know what peg it's supposed to fit in and as such, I'm not taking in the whole picture but rather the things that stick out most.

~ he's a pedophile.

~ A show for perverts.

That there is well retarded. So if you're having sex with a girl unless she never explicitly says she consents by saying "yes" or something along those lines, it means she might not be consenting? Are you insane? I'm not arguing with you about this anymore, because you've distorted everything with assumptions. Rape is a very extreme term, and if it was rape she would have resisted and by the next episode she would not have been so nice to him. Let it go, admit you're wrong -_-

You're not taking into context the anime characters we're dealing with here.
Okay analogy time, if Taisuke asked a sleeping Kotonoha "do you want to have sex?" got no answer and stuck his dick in her anyway, then he done a naughty thing, replace "sleeping" with "dead fish eyed shocked Kotonoha" and it's the same thing.

Or we could just check our wikipedia overlords on the matter.

Drugs certainly fix that whole resisting problem. No resistance, no foul!

Just because that's how it works doesn't mean they have to use it!

The whole manzai thing is why I pretty much loathe most anime comedies.

I CAN SEE IT IS A JOKE. YOU DO NOT NEED SOMEONE TO SCREAM "DON'T DO THAT FUNNY THING!" AT ME TO REALISE IT IS A JOKE.

Ugh.

So Anime-GAF, I'm watching Bakemonogatari. Shit is surreal as fuck, the characters are all goofy as hell and the supernatural elements are pretty different from other things I've seen in anime.

But beyond that, I'm kinda confused a little about something. What is this show supposed to be? Like I enjoy it, but I really don't know what peg it's supposed to fit in and as such, I'm not taking in the whole picture but rather the things that stick out most.

In general I suppose it falls into the 'supernatural detective' genre wherein the protagonist investigates some 'supernatural' occurrence which is impeding a persons life. The protagonist will then generally attempt to remove this 'supernatural' element and restore order - however these stories usually tells us something about the character of the person afflicted by the problem. They might not be the random victim of some event - they may have a defect in some part of their character which is simply being highlighted by the supernatural being.

It can be more straightforward, of course, but it's often used to explore a particular character or idea. Oh, and there's fanservice to consider.

What an incredibly poor argument. When she is "dead eyed" she is fully conscious and has the potential to resist, if she is sleeping she is not conscious and thus cannot resist. You love to distort everything. She did consent, she may have been feeling vulnerable and weak at the time, but that doesn't mean she didn't consent. All is it means is that she made a bad decision not resisting.

If there is no clear consent, it's rape. Both legally and ethically. I feel stupid quoting Wikipedia here, but...

Wikipedia said:
In any allegation of rape, the absence of consent to sexual intercourse on the part of the victim is critical.[4] Consent need not be expressed, and may be implied from the context and from the relationship of the parties, but the absence of objection does not of itself constitute consent. Lack of consent may result from either forcible compulsion by the perpetrator or an incapacity to consent on the part of the victim (such as persons who are asleep, intoxicated or otherwise mentally helpless).

That's how we get these weird arguments on GAF about whether it's right to wake your partner with sex.

Given that you can distill the entirety of the show's action bits into a single tiny gif I don't really think that's a reason people watch it. Oh! Unless you meant "action".

I see, thanks. Kinda wish if it didn't take such a long build up to get like a one or two sequence conclusion on the supernatural side of things, but all in all, it's cool especially when the characters are this quirky.

Look at this perv.

Everybody knows you watch Bakemonagatari for the plot and action.

Gee, thanks guys. :P

I think I'm going to make Ergo Proxy my official School Days / Glass Fleet / Arjuna suggestion. My only fear is that someone may end up liking it.

What other kind of action do we talk about here, really.

I do wonder what just what highs they'll hit next in Nise. Or lows.

Too much rape in here, time for a distraction:

So Wikipedia defines not being able to consent as "forcible compulsion by the perpetrator or an incapacity to consent on the part of the victim", there was none of that in this anime. She was fully conscious. As I said, she may have made a bad decision because of her feelings, that still does not mean she didn't consent.

Anyway...

I was just doing some reading, as you do, when I came across this:

Idol Defense Force Hummingbird:
The five Toreishi sisters, Kanna, Yayoi, Satsuki, Uzuki and Mina are teenage idol singers who are collectively known as The Hummingbirds. They are also one of the ace fighter pilot squadrons in the Japanese military. For in this world, the military is owned and operated by the large entertainment and music corporations. So when they aren't saving the world from major overseas threats, they are on stage in frilly dresses singing about the "Rainbow Forces" of love. This is the story of how they came to be Japan's most successful idol group and their first line of defense.
There's nothing new under the sun.

School Days 5

Not a fan of the focus of some of the shots in this but I'm going to guess that's normal for a show like this. That said,
good for you, Makoto!

By consent you mean not saying no? You're talking about Kotonaha here, she didn't resist or argue back when everyone was flinging shit at her in the series, it's her character.

I love how you missed the "such as persons who are asleep, intoxicated or otherwise mentally helpless" part.

Fuck I need a dose of cute. CARDCAPTORS HERE I COME.

CCS is a GREAT CURE.
If you need other recommendations, as always, just ask.

The fact that it's someone's character, for example, a slut to fuck people doesn't make them exempt from their responsibilities. Oh hi, I'm a murderer, but it's my character you know, so please excuse me. You've shot yourself in the foot with that argument, because a characteristic is part of someone's character, it's what makes them do things. If you suddenly start making people exempt because: "hey ya know, it's just my character derp" every criminal would run around innocent.
It's totally her own fucking fault that she didn't resist, no one else. And I felt sorry for Taisuke, because after he had sex with her, she wants to forget everything, because it's his friend that she wants. Imagine how he must feel after he went through all the mental preparation to have sex with her. So he was pretty much used.
And no, I didn't miss shit, the "(such as persons who are asleep, intoxicated or otherwise mentally helpless)" were in brackets and were corresponding to "an incapacity to consent on the part of the victim" part; I intentionally didn't include to avoid and long winded quote. If you're trying to imply she was "mentally helpless", then no she wasn't, she had no mental illness. You can't go around calling people who made mistakes because of their feelings "mentally helpless".

Ergo Proxy is a pretty good series I'd certainly recommend to anyone who likes sci-fi/post-apocalyptic animes, and doesn't belong anywhere remotely near junk like those other three shows! (Well, Arjuna isn't as bad as those other two, but its last third was pretty bad at least.)

It's got a good, if often sad, story, some strong characters (Re-l's a good character, even if Vincent is annoying sometimes), very good art, an interesting world, a good ending that doesn't go into the depths of depression you might think a show like this would, and more... it does have some flaws (the story is confusing at times, for instance), but it's definitely pretty good overall.

I know it's been said already, but you really need to understand that a lack of resistance is rape. It's only consensual if consent is given, lack of resistance is not consent.

Once again, not resisting is NOT giving consent. Giving consent is giving consent. Not resisting is still rape.

There was this one shot like halfway through the series that I really loved when
Re-l and Vincent found one of the abandoned domes, and Re-l was standing in a field of sunflowers (or some yellow flowers).
Overall, I just kind of enjoyed the bleakness of the setting, and in general, i'm a sucker for cyberpunk themes, no matter how integrated they are in a series or not.

When I put it into perspective, there's really no reason I should be shocked that anime fans would have horrifying opinions on rape, but.. Man.

School Days 7

That's a fine way to end an episode. Whether its pacing or the story finally grabbed me, the episodes don't seem to drag as much now.

Mentally helpless does not mean she has a mental illness, it's already explained that she was in shock, and didn't respond to anyting at the time.

Then what is giving consent? Because the wikipedia definition of lack of consent is: "either forcible compulsion by the perpetrator or an incapacity to consent on the part of the victim (such as persons who are asleep, intoxicated or otherwise mentally helpless)." If there is no lack of consent, then by definition she consented.

And this is where we go round in circles.

Bakemonogatari 15

OK, fuck everything else. Why in God's name couldn't this be an action series? Or like, play up the action by 100 times or so? I was already kinda hoping for it from the Suruga Monkey episodes, but saw that the series wouldn't go full hog into that direction. After this though? I'd be up for some vampire/supernatural war stories just based on that short clip from Koyomi's first encounter with them. Please tell me this is getting touched on somehow? Please?

Back on track, sweet little ending there. Oshino was a character that needed to be more than mission control, but the whole episode was pretty much building up to that conclusion, give the emphasis on showing how Koyomi grew into the role throughout the episode.

Finally, Shinobu is wtfhax, seriously.

Edit: The fuck kinda discussion did I walk in on..? O_o

Three things.

1) You acted before as if it were absurd that someone who didn't resist could be raped. I used Wikipedia to show that this was not necessarily the case, and that the definition of consent was more complicated. It's not a legally binding authority on consent or rape.

2) Even if we're following Wikipedia, "may result from" is not the same as "is". It implies that there can be other, unmentioned circumstances that can lead to an unstated lack of consent.

3) Even if we ignore "may result from", and act like the circumstances mentioned are the only ways that someone can fail to consent without explicitly stating it, you're working on a very narrow definition of "forcible compulsion".

Each party has a responsibility to be sure that the other is okay with sex before the act. If someone is too shy and withdrawn to outwardly and violently refuse someone she doesn't want to be with, that's not license for anyone with the courage to ask to have sex with her regardless of her wishes.
