I think someone a few pages ago nailed it when they said evangelicals are suckers for the "redemption" angle.

Yup, redemption narratives get them all hot and bothered. Voting for Newt even lets them take a part in the story.

Haha, oh man. Don't these assholes have their sandy panties in a bunch over traditional family values and the sanctity marriage? And then they go and vote en masse for a cheating double divorcee wannabe swinger? Republicans must really hate Mormons.

If Mitt doesn't get the nomination, he should spend his millions and run 3rd party just to fuck the GOP out of spite.

Conservative also like traditional masculinity. If a guy makes mistakes, no big deal to a lot of people as long as he does the whole song and dance of asking for forgiveness and finding God.

You're not going to go into an evangelical bookstore and see literature on the "cult" of Catholicism. You will find it in droves on Mormonism, however. If this is surprising to you, you just don't know as much about evangelicals or the south as you think.

But he would aggressively attack Obama and try to belittle him aka red meat for the base

The base will always vote for their party, but that kind of thing will turn off the independents, which is what matters most in the general elections. That's why I believe the gop can't win. The independents never really liked romney and they will hate newts corruption, racism, and hypocrisy.

I don't think Newt and his supporters really give a shit. They just want to attack Obama and "prove" he's an intellectual lightweight

If Romney doesn't blow Newt out in Florida, this could get interesting. It's a closed primary too...

Whoa, Florida is winner-take-all. Whoever wins there will be a huge favorite.

Only half the delegates count. They have been punished for moving their primary up.

Second-class hotel rooms. A poor view on the Republican National Convention floor in Tampa. A loss of VIP passes.

Florida Republicans had to swallow these penalties Wednesday when the Republican National Committee's rules panel approved the punishments because the state bucked the party by holding an early primary on Jan. 31.

Florida already lost half of its 100 delegates — the people who technically cast votes for the party nominee at the convention.

But from a media perspective, a Florida win is huge. A guy like Newt needs all the free coverage he can get.

Wow, SC turnout (could be) up 30 percent over 2008. Guess we know what part of the base is motivated.

Extrapolating from the returns so far suggests that the turnout in South Carolina is up something on the order of 30% from 2008, when it was 445,677. That may turn out not to be the case if the returns so far are from the heavy-voting precincts and so the extrapolation may be unduly high. But if turnout really is up, that is a big contrast from Iowa, where turnout was 3% over 2008 and New Hampshire, where it was up 4%.

MSNBC saying that Gingrich's big money supporters were basing their future support of his campaign on tonight's success. Sounds like they've been convinced to match Newt's 5m spending in Florida, meaning he'll have 10m available for ads in Florida

Fantastic... these next 10 days are going to be amazing.

LOL

For all those laughing about the Newt win, I'd hold that for now. Newt is a dangerous opponent for Obama right now. For some reason, he motivates the base HUGE. That's not good news.

Yeah but he probably motivates independents to vote for Obama!

But the bases don't really decide the election. The independents do. Besides, the left dislikes Newt just as much as the right dislikes Obama, so having Newt will most likely motivate Obama's base.

And? The entire GOP base wouldn't stop Obama from riding to re-election thanks to 60%+ of the female and Hispanic votes against Gingrich.

Look at Gingrich's unfavorable numbers. He is unelectable.

I want to see Newt's likability numbers after this weekend, then I won't worry.
