The problem the Republicans have, and it is an enormous one, is that they still do not have a candidate that can beat Obama in a general election. Is it Christie? Both Gingrich and Romney have fatal flaws, ones I just don't think they could overcome.

Reminds me of 2008, when all the Republicans were hoping that Clinton vs. Obama would get ugly. This is what is called a Republican Apocalyptic scenario: a candidate so bad that he wouldn't just lose the presidency, he'd destroy Repub down ticket races. It's plausible he'd lose 41 states or more.

Because no one knows how it would have been settled in bankruptcy court. Some layoffs, probably. Some pay cuts, probably. Maybe some assets sold off. Secured creditors do better (and perhaps the extra money they get goes towards creating new jobs - but again, no one knows).

Also, GM going bankrupt is quite a different situation from the government taking over a bank, for many reasons pertaining both to the nature of the business and the regulations that govern them.

it could be the best thing for the GOP. They might be forced to reposition themselves as a mainstream conservative party, and not only will that benefit them but America in general. It's not healthy having a lunatic party that is viably electable.
