I feel like the ATT exclusive 3G stuff in NA was stupid on Sony's part.
A judge would probably allow homebrew on the device to allow any data provider, which would cause problems for Sony... unless I'm mistaken on how the technology works...

I suppose the problem is that we don't know how much AT&T had to do with that choice.

AFAIK the physical hardware for CDMA and GSM devices is different, if that is the case then Sony were never going to release a CDMA version of the hardware as it's just pointless considering every other major country uses GSM almost exclusively. On that basis any CDMA networks are automatically not eligible anyway. I don't know enough about US telecoms to know how made GSM networks there are though. It should be unlocked, but then so should lots of 3G capable devices that aren't.

I have a suspicion that in France mobile devices cannot be locked to a carrier by law. I'm not 100% on that though.

Let's not worry about price for a second:

I still can't make up my mind about digital vs. retail. I want to support digital because of it's immediacy, less wasted plastic, the possibility to re-download, keep all games with me on the go, etc.

But I can't help envisioning myself in 10-20 years turning on my Vita to play, seeing something has gone wrong with the mem card or something, and not being able to get to my games ever again.

Just this weekend I found a really cheap copy of Chrono Trigger at a garage sale, took it home and popped it into my SNES and played. Then took out a handful of othe SNES games and played. No dicking with accounts. No connecting to some server to validate my purchase.

Shouldn't we expect physical vita carts to operate the same in 20 years as they do today? I have no idea if/how/why Sony would support Vita digital downloads in 20 years, and that shit worries me.

I think for the most part I will pick up physical copies but the games I know I will want to keep I will such as UMVC3 and Street Fighter x Tekken will be bought digitally.

You're correct.

The only two CDMA carriers are Verizon and Sprint with the rest of the world using GSM. They were never gonna make a CDMA version of the system, and if you're choosing between AT&T and T-Mobile, you'd pick AT&T since T-Mobile is burning money and subscribers at an alarming rate, and their future is very hazy.

Bascially, it's not AT&T's fault that they're the only choice to companies who want a device that works around the world.

Pre-ordered one of the Hori screen protectors (haven't actually ordered the Vita yet. :p). Let's see just how fool proof they really are!

I just hope the VITA like all AT&T smartphones (not saying its a smartphone) can be unlocked to be used on any other carrier via unlock code

I don't see any reason to expect the cartridge games to last significantly longer than the memory cards (yes, write/rewrite wear, but I don't think it will make a difference between being able to play your games 10-20 years from now or not, not to mention potential backward compatibility and the ability to redownload/transfer, options you don't have with physical copies that can be lost/stolen/broken). I'll probably go with physical copies for most games though. Things I'll want to go back to often like Wipeout will be nice to have digitally, so I don't have to worry about changing cartridges, but those will be outliers.

Still, price is what it ultimately does come down to despite you writing it off. I don't see any reason why Vita will be any different than PSP, and most publishers seemed to forget all about PSN after shoving their game on the service. So you can find a UMD for $10 in a bargain bin but they expect you to pay $40 for a digital copy. No thanks.

So I'm still on the fence about using/buying a screen protector. I do not own a fancy touch device so I am not familiar with the feeling one gets from rubbing a finger on a screen.

Will putting on a screen protector ruin what the bare screen is supposed to feel like and make touching the screen stickier than it would be without it or cause any other issues?

I had one on my phone for the first 18 months. The surface isn't quite as "glidey" as the bare screen, but fingerprints are less noticeable. And the software response is about the same.

The key is application. If you stick the film properly and get the bubbles out, it's invisible.

If rubbed one out on many screens and I hate using protection.

I've never had any problems.

It doesn't change anything other than the fact that your screen won't get dirty. You really should get one.

Over the next week, Ubisoft will be profiling our upcoming portfolio of launch titles for the PlayStation Vita. All these titles will be available a week prior to launch, giving gamers the opportunity to build up their library prior to the launch of this highly anticipated PlayStation handheld or experience the games early if you are picking up the First Edition bundle on 2/14. Let’s kick off the week by stepping into the fantasy genre.

Uh, am I going insane? Isn't the First Edition bundle coming out on the 15th and not the 14th?

Stuff releases on Tuesdays, which is the 14th for NA.

And that game could use more femmes. That cover looks all grim with gloomy men.

Coming out the 14th. That's a Tuesday which systems/new games usually come out on.

Really? I think every single retailer, Amazon, Best Buy, Target, Gamestop etc all have it listed as February 15th. So it's actually going to be in stores on the 14th? I know Tuesday is the normal day for games which is why I thought it was weird the Vita was coming out on a Wednesday.

Guess I can cross one more day off my calendar today then :)

No, it will be in stores on the 15th. Isn't it like it always was, a game takes always approx. 1 day to be delivered to stores? If you get some release-day delivery you will get it on the 14th.

Release day delivery for the First Edition on Amazon says it will be delivered the 15th and release day delivery on the normal Vita says the 22nd which is also a Wednesday.

If my Vita scratches that badly, I'll just buy another one.

I saw a video of some guy buy one brand new and imported it, to smash it with a sledge hammer.

Held up after a first partial hit.

Even after he broke it, he had to flex it really hard to break it all apart.

It would be nice to get it one day earlier...but that's not going to happen. The PSP released on a Thursday here in the states. 3DS came out on a Sunday.

Nintendo stuff always come out on Satuday.

I got the PSP on a Wednesday out in the states, so who knows.
We will see

I don't understand why they are trying to charge $40 for this game. I feel like they would sell a whole hell of a lot more copies pricing it around $20 at most. If this is just the PSN version they released earlier then why is it so much. It is a budget title in japan right? Every comment on that post is complaining about the price. Come on now.

In Japan the game is $40 (retail) or $32 (PSN). Why they charge so much? Because they foolishly believe people will buy anything at launch just to use their shiny new Vitas. As majority of recent Ubisoft decisions go, this is completely not true. But hey, if they had someone other than monkeys working there, they would've had more than one good franchise (AC).

Out of touch piece of shit company, I hate that they publish Lumines.

I keep vacillating between the 32gig cart and the 8. Fortunately Amazon doesnt fine you for switching over and over. I think I've finally decided on the 8 and will wait for what I think is the inevitable price drop on the 32s in mere months. Hopefully Lumines, Stardust, Uncharted, MHFU, and some demos fit on the 8.

Ahh, okay. I thought it was cheaper in Japan when it came out. Nevermind then, still seems dumb though. Guess I'll wait for some of these prices to drop down down down.

FYI - Uncharted is 2777MB

Pretty much every game in Ubisoft's launch lineup is being sent to die with their across the board $40 pricing. The only title out of the batch that deserves to be priced at $40 is Rayman Origins and even it will likely suffer in light of its shabby console performance and the fact that it will be easily found at 50% of that price on non-Vita systems at the time of its release.

I was hoping for Rayman to be available early too.
I believe the implication from Ubisoft is that all 5 of their launch titles will be available both in stores and digitally on the 14th. This includes Rayman.

Unit 13 is also $39.99 and Uncharted is $49.99. When the platform holder is setting these prices...

I don't have a problem with original exclusive* games charging $40 (I do have a problem with $50), but Ubisoft is publishing iOS ports, and games they've basically admitted will get iOS ports for $40.

* until they're ported to the PS3 because SCEA sucks

Anyone getting the starter kit, worth it?

All I need is the soft pouch (like the one that shipped with launch PSPs). Everything else is a nice bonus for the additional $20. I looked at the other pouch for $19, but it doesn't look too travel friendly.. I'm also getting the Hori full body SP.

i was going to get it until i switched over to the early release package. it is definitely worth it. i really would like to have that soft case in addition to the one that comes in the early adopter package.
