I just realized I'm racist :(

I think what he's saying that after he found out it was a black Republican was saying it, he thought that the politician's stance was good. I guess he is saying he has a bias against white people and for black people?
But he was talking about black issues.

I hold a minor in African American history but someone with my same education on the subject, and has had experiences within the African American community that I have not had, probably is the better person to cede to on discussions.

I guess that could be why he was saying he changed his position, but he focused more on his race rather than his education. I'm unsure what his exact point was, because it seems to be stumbling around a few different issues.

By that definition you don't sound racist. However I still reserve the right to add to the previous lighten up post...

From what I understand, the second part of the sentence sounded fine no matter if the guy was black or white. It only makes sense to become educated on the subject before you speak about something. Not that I always do it, but it makes sense to.

I love the subtle thread here of posters who assume that racism has to be against minorities (in this case, blacks). I think that's the primary reason so many people got confused.

Edit: ^ my moves are the juice. Thank you.

but not jungle juice?

Dude sauced those motherfuckers.

Anyways, OP, it's cool to self-analyze and try to become a better person. Most people cannot do that--you can look at some of the comments in this thread and see as much. I don't think this is really thread-worthy, however.

It's OK to not like a black person for a reason other than that he's black. A asshole is an asshole.

...is that a proper response because I'm still a little confused.

It's okay! I'm white and I didn't feel offended by your racism!! Strangely racism doesn't have any effect on me, because I guess I just don't give a shit.

everyone is racist.
people are just to ignorant to realize it. I have racist moments on a regular base.
There's nothing you can do about it; it's human nature.

it also depends a lot how you see/interpret racism.

Judging people on individual bases isn't impossible or even difficult. I'll give you people are inherently prejudiced (scary-looking people are scary) but racism is something different.

Want the secret to non-racism? Everyone is equally a nutter dipshit until they prove otherwise. Done. No more racist thoughts.

Would you more value someone's opinion about Sweden if you discovered they were Swedish?

Yes.

So why is it something horrible of its based on skin-color related groups?

Racism is bunk but the anti-racism policeman inside the OP's head is misfiring like mad.

It's not as much as a problem as you think. Just hang out with some people you feel you are racist against. If your irrational sentiment against them persists, just accept it as a part of yourself but don't let it blur your judgement.
For instance, treat people who apply for a position in your company equally. Try to treat a super bimbo just like a dude you really wouldn't like at first glance.

Bingo. Perfectly said.

A Swedish person is likely to have more facts about the coutry. A black American doesn't have some insight into the emotional state of all other black Americans.

Also, besides my feelings on that one statement, my opinion of his character changed from low to high once I found out he's black. That's the part that makes me prejudiced.

Many of you seem to prefer that term to racist, but while I'm certainly not hateful, isn't the above-mentioned descrimination defined as racism?
