Holy crap. The screens on these things have aLONG way to go.

On a side note, can't believe how different the two 4S's are in black/colour/contrast, purchased within a week of each other.

Holy crap! I thought my typing had just gone downhill despite being able to type just fine on both of my iphones (3gs and 4s). Even tried different cases to see if my problem was typing on glass v. screen protector v. built-in screen protector on otterbox - still had problems with typing on both phones (3gs was on ios5 before I retired it).

Still though, sucks that they haven't improved the keyboard as I'm way more proficient at typing on it than when I got my first ios devices (ipod touch & iphone 3gs).

Hmmm. Interesting on the typing thing. I too had noticed that I seem to be a little worse at typing than I used to be, though I don't know if the correction would apply since it seems like I just have issues hitting the 'right' letter now - or at least more than I used to.

Apple is getting the screens for the 4S from multiple manufactures which would explain the inconsistency.

I prefer my sisters overall by quite a bit. Mine just seems washed out and lacking in vibrancy in comparison. Though my old iPhone 4 beats both. Has the contrast and black depth of her 4S but with a cooler colour palette somewhere in-between the two above.

Sigh...going to ring Apple and see what they can do. Might seem anal, but when you spend this much on devices and contracts, I think it's a fair complaint.

Samsung is obsessed with using a really, really cool white-point (around 8800K, iirc) in most of their devices, gives everything an annoying blue tint. The industry standard is 6500K, don't know why everyone just doesn't use that and be done with it.

Some of my apps won't open. Facebook, Real Racing 2, Yelp, Fruit Ninja... I have two accounts and I've downloaded some apps on one account and the others on my other account. Would that be a problem? It only started happening after I synced my phone to my computer for the first time. How do I fix this?

the apps from multiple accounts probably isn’t causing it. I’ve had that setup before and it works with no issues (you just need the second account’s password for updates).

First, try rebooting the phone and see if the apps launch.

Now, I had a problem with app crashes with my sister’s ipad a few month’s ago. after the upgrade to iOS 5, a bunch of her apps would not launch (and she was unable to make any backups to either the cloud or iTunes). The only fix we found was to reinstall iOS 5 from scratch and start fresh, then redownload the apps. seemed something really obscure and messed up happened during that initial iOS 5 upgrade that messed up the ipad.

but anyway, I bring that up as a last resort. try the reboot, then you may want to uninstall and reinstall the apps if they don’t launch after the reboot. if that doesn’t work, then try the iOS reinstall.

They really need to pick one source so people don't think there is something fucked up with their screen.

I have to imagine that of the millions and millions of iPhone owners out there...maybe 10,000 of them will ever care that their screen was made by company x vs. company y.

Probably not something anyone should lose sleep over at Apple.

Definitely would be nice if they settled on a specific spec and supplier, but I'm sure there's some cost benefit to divvying it over multiple suppliers or maybe it's the only way they can keep up with demand?

Either way, I'm sure the benefits in cost or supply far outweigh the potential disappointment of a handful of customers.

Paying money for an inferior screen, the most important thing on the device for the end user, and having to deal with restocking fees or refurbished replacements is not right.

Don't pull numbers out of your ass please.

As it's role in gaming grows, this issue will grow.

Looking for a bit of advice to avoid what is, admittedly, only a minor nuisance.

I leave the WiFi on my phone on all the time - so it just connects when I get home, to work, to my Dad's house etc.
Now, I live in a new block of flats and when I get home, my WiFi has automatically connected to either the BTOpenzone or BTFON hotspots in the building. Not having a login for these, means my iPhone obviously doesn't get any data, even though I'm 'connected' to a network.
Therefore, I have to open my settings and manually connect to my home network every time I get home.

Is there any way around this?

I don't have my phone in front on me, but I think there's a toggle switch in settings that makes the phone ask before joining an unknown network while connecting automatically to known networks. Do you have that turned on?

Tap the blue arrow when you're connected to that network and then forget the network. Enable ask to join networks.

If you want to try and argue that there is a massive number of iPhone users who notice or care about the quality of their screens than you're welcome to try.

I'm not buying that it's a big enough issue that Apple would take any action on it.

As I said, I agree with you in principle...but to pretend that this issue should be big potatoes for Apple is pretty off.

Well, the second-gen unibody MacBook Pro turned out to have an inferior screen that displayed inaccurate colors, and I don't recall Apple taking any action against it. Then there was the first mag safe cords being a safety hazard due to splaying, and that wasn't addressed company wide until last year.

Apple has a reputation for build quality, but they've had issues like anyone else. They just tend to make up for it with great customer service.

Right, I shall have a look tonight. Seems to be a simple solution which i have overlooked!

Thanks.

I do already have ask to join networks on, and didn't choose to join these others, but i will see if forgetting them works.

Gaf Im thinking about joining iPhone-Gaf. I have a Droid Incredible 2 right now. What would be the the benefits of going to the iPhone? Should I go with the iPhone 4 or wait for the iPhone 5?

Ok so I finally restored my phone from my 4 to my replacement 4S. Pretty much had an issue the moment the restore finished. It just looks a lot more washed out than my 4. It doesn't have a yellow tint, it's actually quite cool in colour, however, the black level and contrast is probably 5-15% worse than my old 4. I also compared it to my sisters 4S and whilst hers is too yellow for my liking, it does have better colours, contrast and black levels.

What gives? And can I swap this at an Apple store? Unfortunately Vidafone won't do it and say some variations can exist, but I do not want this washed out version.
Yeah I've had four different 4S since November, they all have different tints. The tint is nothing compared to the static noise I get from the 3G chip though. If you notice that static you'll want to replace it badly (my three replacements had it as well though).

So my advice would be to stay with your current phone unless you notice http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bf0r1QRW8q4.

I’d probably get a 4S now as it just came out last fall.

benefits depend on what stuff you find important. the iPhone has better quality third party apps. more variety of games. a more intuitive, less fiddly interface.

But, there’s practically no room for customization. there are limits on what apps can do with the system or how they can communicate with each other. And some things you may have liked on Android (like the back button) are gone.

you can go to an apple store to mess around with iOS and check out the hardware to see if you like it.

I've had the 4S for 2 weeks or so, upgraded from the HTC Incredible. I love it so far; biggest kicker is the battery. Even with little to no use during a day, I had to charge my old phone every night-and this was using stuff like advanced task killer all the time. Right now with the 4S I'm at a day and a half on standby, 4 hours in usage and still have 45% left.

I'm just going to have to buy from apple.con from now on. I got mine from RadioShack for 50$ off and it has an uneven backlight when I look at a white screen at a weird angle. Not enough to replace it until a major problem comes because I only see it under one OCD scenario.

I know tech faults can't be avoided I just want the faults to be on even ground not different depending on hardware used in the same model.

Positives? Battery
Negatives? You'll be asking yourself "why the fuck can't I do this?" every day.

After getting comfortable for three months or whatever, the only REAL drawback of moving from Android to iOS is that you can't download stuff. Other than that its been a reasonably smooth transition.

just an FYI. if you find yourself in situations where you need to download stuff from the browser, get iCab. you can download to the regular app file storage area or download straight to dropbox (very useful feature).

I don't know why but I just can't do third party browsers. Its just me being weird. However, I think part of my downloading comment was also just file system stuff in general. Android totally has a filesystem and while it can make things janky and complicated it allows you to do a lot of stuff.

Total geek question, when you save to dropbox in icab, does it download/upload, or does it bypass the device altogether?

I understand why you might avoid the third party browsers. I brought it up in case a situation arises where you really need to get a file downloaded. you are not without recourse

OK, so it’s been a while since I used icab (iOS 5 solved a lot of my safari annoyances) but this is what I remember:

small files, like images, you can tap and hold on them and then save directly to dropbox.

larger files had to be saved to the device first, then uploaded to dropbox. that may have changed in the last few months. i do not know what the MB cutoff is for this restriction.

I have a white iPhone 4S that I want to swap out for a black one at the Apple store, will they hassle me about it? Also the sleep wake button is a bit mushy, so I could use that as the excuse for the swap.

Let me take 30 minutes to scroll down to the bottom of this page, with 1000 swipes of my finger.

Maybe it's because I've been using an iPhone since 2007 or the fact the I use a bookmarklet to jump to page bottom, but I've never had an issue with this, nor have I seen any better alternatives on other OS's/browsers.

And at least the scrolling is fluid and not laggy as shit.

I agree, but the key part of that was "when you're not used to it."

Let the record show I don't think one approach is inherently better than the other, they're just different.

On an iPhone you scrub, on Android you flick and tap.

Android is quicker, iPhone is more tactile.

Opera has given me quick scrolling down on large pages such as these 100 post ones. It's no mouse wheel and scroll nor an instant down unless I'm using Secondapps GAF, but does the job better than Safari as far as I'm concerned.

Quick question from a new Iphone owner: Is there a way to attach photos to posts in forums, for example NeoGAF, using the Iphone? Is there a mobile version of say photobucket?
