Ace Attorney 5 (Platform Unknown), Ace Attorney 123HD (iOS) announced

The sprites in the HD iOS ports, as well as the one in the picture above, seem to be based on the original illustrations the GBA sprites were made from. The Gyakuten Saiban artbook is full to the brim of those. If you have the book, check it out. If you don't, do a Google search for "The Art of Gyakuten Saiban".

They have thick outlines and strong colors because they needed to be downscaled to the GBA screen resolution, and have their color depth lowered quite significantly. It's not surprising they look off in full color and resolution.

Haha no. The sprites in the HD port are obvious trace overs of the original sprites. Very quick and cheap trace overs at that too.

No, he is correct, this are the illustrations that were scaled down to create the GBA sprites.

Jocchan is indeed correct. However, the coloring is off compared to the illustrations in the artbook. I have the artbook right in front of me.

Yes, but the HD sprites are trace overs none the less. It's very, very obvious. Just look at them, the HD sprites are missing a lot of subtle details that were present in the original sprites/artwork. This is an obvious give away for a quick and reckless trace over, drawing straight lines across subtle curves and the like.

There's a big difference between them tracing over the original sprites and tracing over the original artwork.

Whatever it is, the new art is decidedly crappy. I'm not sure if it's the thick lines, the lousy gradients, the lack of detail, whatever. It looks like a low-budget Xbox Indie.

Dunno if it's been mentioned yet, but the revelation of AA5 came right on the heels of a dialogue between Apollo and Klavier with the gist being "Hey, don't forget about us!" Mizuki performed Love☆Love Guilty, and then they revealed AA5. Given the context, I think it's safe to say that AA5 will see the return of our beloved little Forehead-kun. ;)

Suddenly, Mizuki Ichiro singing with Shu Takumi on guitar.

SOMEBODY UPLOAD THIS TO YOUTUBE PLEASE.

It was pretty awesome! I had no idea that Takumi could play guitar, so I was a little confused when I first saw him on stage: "Wait... Is that him!?"

All recording (audio/video) was prohibited, however, so I dunno if you'll see it on YouTube any time soon. That said, there were several cameras set up to film the event, so my guess is that Capcom will be releasing a DVD in the near future!

Good. That game gets a lot of undeserved hate around here. Save it for Ace Attorney Investigations.

When did I say they traced over the original artwork? I was just acknowledging the original artwork existed.

This is Capcom from crying out loud. They do not take mobile development even remotely seriously. Their approach to mobile games hasn't changed since the java days. The Dev team on this port would have been given the source code, a ridiculously short deadline and nothing else. The dev team has likely never even seen the original copy of the art.

So... you are still saying they traced the original sprites. O_o

Anyway, here's a quick comparison of the Maya screenshot with the artwork from the artbook.

Edit:
I made the artbook artwork transparent and put it over the new sprite.

Seems to be pretty 1:1 to me.

And here's the original sprite upscaled.

What's with these themed avatars?
Green Scar & Femmeworth with their letter things.
And all these Pokemon trainer girls...

Reminds me of the LA-M3 incident of when I first became a poster...
One of the cases will feature the murdered corpse of Mega Man, right?
Blue Badger X Blue Bomber: The Mascot Murder Mystery Mayhem Millenium Edition

Yesssssssss. Yessssss. Apollo was better written than any of the other entries.

You should see their iOS port of Ghost Trick before you claim that..........oh wait, Americans will never see that.

Too bad that had to shoehorn and ruin Phoenix's character into it.

Phoenix was always a with-the-wind eccentric. T&T showed that much, and that was him only years prior to the core of the series. The Phoenix of Apollo fit, and was quite the natural dev arcing if you take that into account, imo.

It's not Phoenix's character that was ruined (I agree that his arc actually does make sense for him based on what happens and his established character), it was Apollo's character arc that got completely destroyed and the fact that none of Phoenix's friends stuck around to help him that made no sense.

Phoenix was not ruined, he was only made better. It was the only opportunity for Phoenix to really grow as a character.

He probably thanked them but turned down their help. Also GS4 took place seven years after GS3. Considering all the shit that happened during his years as a defense attorney, he was probably a little glad to have an excuse to stop defending and dealing with all the bullshit. Admittedly, it could have/should have been handled a bit better, but Takumi kind of had his hands tied.

Honestly, I'm betting that we will get AA123HD for Wii U since we are getting tablet with Wii U, along with App stores. I wouldn't be surprise if it happens.

My only real issue with that game is that Klavier was completely nonthreatening as a prosecutor. Most of the time he is helping Apollo out rather than actively fighting against him. It was pretty annoying.

Well to be fair, all the prosecutors have been pretty different. Godot wasn't really threatening either.

And people flipping out about the art... Recall that the art was pretty bad back in the day as well.

And who cares about the art, how will they butcher up the music?????

Did they use new music for the megaman x ios release?

Going to freakin' love playing these in HD on my iPad. I think this may convince some of my more casual gaming co workers to try these as well :)

While this is true (look at Phoenix's eyes, etc, these ARE the original artworks) they still look like shit, because the artworks were made with the GBA in mind.

"Don't put too much detail on them, we will have to put these on a GBA", is what i think they thought back in the days.

I can't believe we are still talking about this while there's Gyakuten 5 announced...

Anyway, Apollo Justice (the game) was absolutely awesome and a true main chapter to the story... i don't care if Phoenix is in this, if Apollo is in this, etc. etc.
I know i will be happy with the result if

1] they don't put too much fanservice in it [here, have some LARRY BUTZ because everyone loves him; here, have some OLDBAG! etc.]

2] Takumi has a role at least (at least!) similar to the one he had for Apollo.
This being a main chapter we can't simply have the AAI team on it.

Trust me, I know what I'm talking about ;p
Seeing those illustrations in high resolution on the artbook left me disappointed as well, but that's because they weren't made to be shown at such resolution.

That's a big leap. the Wii U tablet screen is pretty low-end compared to the iPad's. Especially with iPad going retina like iPhone did.

People expecting iOS ports to Wii U won't get much, the Wii U tablet is basically useless without multi-touch for iOS games.

What's the uPad's resolution? And I think his point was you could have the main graphics in HD on your TV and the menus and GUI on the uPad anyway. Anyway, I wonder about the pricing on the iOS versions. If it's too much I might go for the WiiWare releases even though they don't have enhanced graphics or anything (10 each). That also got 1, 2 and 3, no? Also, what about 4? Is it bad?

Japanese iOS versions with the new graphics will cost 600 yen ($7.80), or the whole trilogy at once for 1,200 yen ($15.60).
