Yup, gonna be a goodun.
Retro must be spending all their Donkey Kong money!
I think they have as much money as Nintendo is willing to spend on them.
The Retro "Legend of Zelda" reveal won't be so shocking.
The additional reveal of a Retro "StarFox" or return to "Metroid" being in development at the studio as well would.
Alas, all that talent focusing on what is most likely to be "Zelda" is really exciting. Can't wait to see what they're cooking!
I've started to think that we're all setting ourselves up for disappointment by hoping/assuming that Retro is making a game that isn't DKCR2. While F-Zero, Zelda, etc. would likely be amazing and great for their respective series if they're ready at launch, DK makes the most sense as a quick-to-develop system seller.
But DK2 doesn't need to be a disappointment. If it's Retro's next game, I'd love to see them go completely insane with it and push the limits of the series. If DKCR was New Super Mario Bros., DK 2 could be Super Mario Galaxy (flawed analogy, but you get my point).
I don't want another Donkey Kong out of Retro Studios, I think it was suitable as a a stopgap to generate a lot of money whilst allowing Retro to rejuvenate the team, but another one would be a waste as Nintendo have plenty of teams to get yet another 2D platformer from. 4| F-Zero
I think a hypothetical DKCR2 is more likely to end up on the 3DS rather than whatever they're making for the WiiU.
Considering the people they're hiring, DKCR2 doesn't seem likely.
Not that it won't happen, but I don't think that that is this project.
boo hoo, not a sequel to one of the best platformers of the past decade!
I was thinking that it's possible that the new people are being hired for whatever Retro does after DK2, after putting some finishing HD touches on it. Maybe not. I don't see why it would make more sense, money-wise, to put Retro to work on F-Zero or StarTropics or Zelda when a DK2 would sell a lot more. Not that I'd be complaining.

I'd be down for that.
Also, there is always the possibility they are remaking DK 64. People specialized in large worlds, and whatnot.
He he he...
And having NSMB3DS would have probably sold more than 3D Land.
And Sin and Punishment 2 could have been Wii Music 2.
Nintendo doesn't always go after "What can sell the most".
They go after whatever the fuck they want.
How about a Donkey Kong Country hybrid game like the first Galaxy, platforming parts mixed with open worlds????
Nintendo wouldn't have put Treasure on Wii Music 2. You're right about 3D Land, but there it's a case of 3D Land being made as well as SMB3D, where a Retro Zelda at launch would be made instead of DK 2. Plus, Iwata's been talking about the need for a strong launch for months now. What better way to kick off a system if Mario and Smash Bros. aren't available?
3rd person Star Tropics.
I figure if I say it enough, the universe will make it true.
But at the same time, having a good, strong core game that draws in the crowd for games like Darksiders and Batman and CoD from Retro would do Nintendo wonders, more so than a new DKCR. That's a crowd that they can easily get later, but they have a limited timeframe to grab the nicher market.
Zelda very much still has the Nintendo label on it, and I don't think there's much Retro can do to change that. I could see this being accomplished with StarTropics or a new IP or MAYBE F-Zero, but it's always struck me that the way to draw in the HD Twin crowd is to actually get those third parties to publish for the console, not to make similar games.
If Retro is making something other than DK2, it's probably a case of Nintendo playing the long game, which would be smart but doesn't strike me as a move to be made by a company that just had its first annual loss in years. Or you're right and Nintendo is just doing whatever the hell it wants, which is certainly possible.
I must have missed something in Galaxy. Either way, that sounds pretty nice. I have a feeling DK could work very well as an open world platformer.
It's a bit of both.
It's Nintendo's job to shape the audience of their system. And if they want a sustainable third party friendly userbase, it would be in their best interest to make games that would lead to third party titles doing well.
Also, keep in mind that this title will have been in production for a while. Long before Nintendo knew it would be taking a loss.
squid said:Oh boy. Just thinking about a 3D DK open world platformer on WiiU with HD and all of Retro's brilliance is... torture. Cos it's not gonna happen :-(
Okay, I get both of your points. I still don't see Zelda filling this role though.
I just want a non-Mario 3D platformer, period. But I have no idea which developer should be put to task on it because nobody makes 3D platformers anymore. :/ Maybe Next-Level?
Right, and Retro isn't working on Zelda...
I'd forgotten your earlier post, sorry. D: What do you think it is?
Right, and Retro isn't working on Zelda...
Just a question, but did someone tell you what they're working on?ShockingAlberto?
No.
Just guesses based on information we have.
We can say with good certainty that they aren't making Zelda (Based on what Alberto has said, as well as the fact that we just got a Zelda game).
Retro has stated that they aren't working on a new DKCR.
They are hiring people with knowledge of large worlds, people who have created very advanced engines and people who have done more realistic and "mature" art.
So, we have a few choices. It's either Metroid in some form. Or another older action franchise.

Fair enough, just thought you sounded awfully certain. That DK quote is from a while ago and things can change, not that they necessarily have.
Well, people with far more insight and connections than me have stated that is isn't Zelda, so I'm going with their call on this one.

They've posted in this thread. The most notable being ShockingAlberto. You can find his posts on the first page, in fact.
You don't have a spotless track record yourself, Poo.Everything he says is a lie though.
