absolutely. but the take-away is that Superman is unusually beloved and extremely popular. If there was a Nolan directing Superman movies over the last 20 years, everyone would agree. But it seems people want to blame the superhero for the bad directors and scripts.

Imagine if Batman Forever was the last Batman film. General public perception of him would be quite different...but he benefits from a wonderful run from a great Director/writing team. It's long past time for a badass Superman film. Hopefully this will be in that vein.

bullshit, people just like fantasizing getting beat up by billionares. and if Batman is so good at battling crime why is Gotham such a hellhole? Metropolis (except suicide slum) I can walk down the street at night. and while the bored playboy maybe a facade, you can't deny that he embraces all that money.

I can only think of three fourths of a decent film. The first half of Superman and the plane sequence in Superman Returns. Seriously, once they introduce Luthor and his land grabbing schemes, everything goes out the window. Which is why I cannot believe that Mario Puzo wrote the story to the original.

The hell you guys. I promise, if you ask random people from around the world to come up with a super hero, their first response will most likely be Superman. And they will most likely know that he can fly, has laser eyes, and is weak to kryptonite. He's like the icon of super heroes.

My freakin parents knows who he is. They think Batman is a bat and Spiderman is a spider. They don't give a shit about super hero movies.

But they know who freakin Superman is.

When kids put on a towel as a fake cape and a logo on their shirt, they want to be Superman. The indestructible super hero that can fly.

Not some lame rich bat with plot armor.

As a kid, I wanted to be Batman. Even had my own mini Batmobile (battery powered of course). So there.

But I agree. Superman is definitely the most iconic and recognizable superhero.
 
Batman is something we can strive to be. Superman's some alien playing human.

are you a multi billionare that can bribe children's services into not putting you into the system so you are free to go to the best schools in the world and access to a company that's a mix of Microsoft, Apple, Northtrop Grunman, GE (whatever is the top military maker) and Pfizer? and basically manipulates his allies into doing his bidding and doesn't trust anybody?

I don't know how anyone can't relate to Batman after watching Batman Begins. Yes he is a rich playboy during the day and the dark knight at night but underneath is Bruce Wayne, the boy with a heart of gold trying to deal with the loss of his parents.

Taking thing just bit far aren't you? Batman and Superman were conceived in the late 1960's and their character designs were more to fit the theme of their respective series Action Comics and Detective Comics. There was no socio-economic commentary then and there isn't any now.

If you are genuinely curious as to why people like Batman more then Superman just connect the dots.

Batman has had a multitude of media hits including several movies, a couple of great cartoon series, a cheesy but popular live action tv show, and two games that were GoTY nominees. Hes easy to adapt to other sources besides comics because he has defined limits and has very little with how good of a guy batman is or where his not so humble beginnings come from.

Superman in contrast has 5 movies two of which are middling at best, an okay animated series, two television series, and a game that lots of people rank as one of the worst of all time. He was also basically a god in the last few versions of the DC universe at some point it become a chore just to adapt him to things because there's no threat to him.
 
I see after consuming some of the Spider-man thread, Batman has now moved on to Superman. Soon Gaf will be all Batman, all the time.

Superman is more iconic for sure. I ran around with a black sheet pretending to be Batman as a kid though. He's just more bad ass.
 
People are shitting on Superman movies now? Granted III and IV were absolute shit and Returns was fairly mediocre. But Donner's original Superman is iconic for a reason and Superman II, especially Donner's cut, is fucking awesome. "Kneel before Zod!"

IV was cheesy, but I still enjoyed it.

III and Returns are terrible. Returns had some neat scenes, but Singer attempting to attach his movie to Donner was a huge mistake.

Superman haters just love to repeat the rhetoric about why Superman is bad, rather than thinking larger. That's the problem with Batfans, tiny brains and a penchant for pederasty. :D

way to downplay Superman, the bias is thick with you. oh, FYI: Superman Action Comics #1 June 1938, Detective Comics #27 June 1939. and don't blame the character, blame the shitty writers they paired him with. me I like whiz bang BOOM in my comics. and also, relax, we're just having fun, no need to take serious as long as there are no insults thrown around.

And what I liked about Begins is yes Batman has a lot to do with prep time and gadgets and resources, but when Bruce becomes Batman you see that rage just seething through him and how determined, how truly he is able to become the guardian of the city in the name of his parents.
 
They are both awesome.

But bottom line Superman is far more well known, and influential. He was the first superhero, and all others sprung from that singularity.

I have no clue how this can be argued. You personally may like Batman better, but the above is uncontestable.
 
To say that Superman is far more well known is a bit of a reach. Superman is a little bit more well known yes, but even a decade ago most people knew who Batman was. The average person is especially well aware now because of the success of the Nolan films, shows, games etc. I find it hard to believe that someone who knows Superman has no clue who Batman is except in a few cases. No one has really been arguing against the idea that Superman is an iconic and influential character so I'm not sure why people keep bringing this up.

Maybe true in the US...
An exemple, my kid corrected his mother the other day because she called "spider-man" his batman toy... Kids know the difference, teenage or male adults know the difference.

Everybody who doesn't give a shit about super-hero still can recognize superman instantly.

I'm not taking this seriously at all, this is fun. I'm really trying to present facts in an objective manner as to why Batman appears to have more popularity in today's world then Superman. I'm sorry about the date that was a typo on my part they were created far earlier, but the point about reading too much into their backgrounds still stands. Blaming the writers in relation to popularity and claiming man Superman is awesome, but has terrible writing is kind of empty isn't it? I mean if I were to say wow Twilight is awesome and has the best love story, but has shit writing and that's why its still the best vampire book/movie would people accept that? (I know little of twilight and picked that as first example that came into my head.

I'm honestly not sure what facet of Batman's and Superman's exposure to media besides comics I missed and if I did miss something be specific please, because I would love to know about it. I will admit I know nothing about Lois and Clark and be downplaying its significance so maybe that show was amazing and nobody ever told me. Batman has had two terrible movies I know, but his ratio on that front is still much better. In the animation front at best I can tell Superman has been the headliner for one series that lasted about two years and then a core cast member where he shared air time equally with other superheros of two other series. Batman was in four different animated series give or take and has appeared in the same multi-superhero shows superman did. The video games remain pretty clear I did neglect to mention all the bad PS2 era Batman games, but Superman had an equal number of similar quality games. Nobody even remembers those games regardless.
 
well it's just that both have had great stories told. but Superman has had a muddied run the last 5-10 years or so in his comics (thank you J. Michael Stracizifndk) while Batman's has been solid. remember in the late 80s and early 90s Superman was hot too with Death of Superman. yeah we live in a far more cynical world but to be honest, Batman is the one that took that insane no killing vow, so i'm not sure which character is more naive.

when Superman is in the right creator's hands and said creator doesn't concern himself with "realism" Superman stories are really fun (All-Star super, superman for all seasons, red son, there's a few more I'm forgetting now) I agree that it is hard to translate all that stuff on screen and video games and Batman's nature lends itself better to that on account of being more human, but it's far from impossible.
what really annoys me personally is how creators like to put these barriers up and constatntly say "superman is indestructible, therefore we can't do anything fun." bull! they just don't want to the research and pick up a book. I'm excited for this movie because I read the interviews by Cavill and Snyder and they seem excited about the source material which can only translate to good things.
