actually, reading that info on Windows 8, sounds like a big change in the underlying architecture. I hope it (a) doesn't fuck up compatibility with apps - they've said not, and (b) doesn't adversely affect performance. I really like how slick current windows phone 7 is with relatively low end hardware. Nice and efficient.

As Tango aims to lower hardware requirements for lower end hardware I really doubt they'd destroy that work with the architecture change.

I'm curious if they still support XNA games as right of now when Windows 8 Phone releases. For the desktop version the XNA support seems to be cancelled, but I can't imagine they dropping the thousand of XNA games available at the marketplace.

Games are apps, and apps are compatible. There might not be any new XNA games (which wouldn't be a bad thing), but the old ones will work.

Not really news, but some confirmation.

Microsoft's Skype division is currently testing an initial Windows Phone client, expected to debut very soon. That's the word from several sources who have confirmed that Microsoft employees are able to download a test version of Skype from the Windows Phone Marketplace. ...

Microsoft's Joe Belfiore originally promised that Skype would arrive on Windows Phone in late 2011, a date that has since passed without any sign of the application — although Microsoft has hinted that the app will arrive "soon," at least one source indicated that it could launch at Mobile World Congress later this month. This all depends on Microsoft's internal testing, but the application is said to be near complete.

I've seen the acronym "NFC" a couple of times in here. I don't know what it means. Is it some kind of camera facing a certain way? I don't even

\/\/\/\/\/ Gotta love technology. My McBurgers won't know what hit them.

near field communication, i believe. you'll be able to tap your phone at registers to pay for shit, pass info over, etc.

You mean Microsoft support for PC games made with XNA?

I've been using it before it got popular.

No, seriously, I've been a user since v0.1a. I even made a thread about it (and people laughed at me and accused me for being some marketing guy :/)

:lol It is pretty sweet. I never saw your thread about it unfortunately.

Better buy a Nokia 900 in April or wait for the WP8 devices?

I think that's what I'm gonna do. I just got the Titan and wanted the Lumia 900 but the difference is mostly cosmetic. I think I'll wait and see what Nokia does when WP8 comes out. Higher resolution and larger storage space seems like something worth waiting for.

While everyone's concerned about compatibility, we shouldn't forget that they to scale Windows Phone DOWN to lower-end hardware.

What gets me about this is by time they finally get Tango actually you know out is there really a need to scale down to lower end hardware? I mean mid ranged clocked single core chips and 512 RAM aren't exactly high end these days. Plus they've been in mass production for so many WP and Android devices over the past few years you'd think by volume and years available they should be pretty cheap to make.

Am I wrong in thinking are MS and Handset makers really going to save that much cash making even lower specs if Tango phones aren't hitting till say mid 2012 anyways?

There are probably areas of the world where cheaper phones are a must and carriers don't subsidize.

I get that part, but how much cheaper are "cheap" phones really going to be? Is 256 RAM really that much cheaper than 512 RAM these days? Is it really going to be that much cheaper to make a phone with a screen resolution LESS than 800 x 480 these days?

Stuff like this makes me wonder if by time Tango hits if lower end hardware is really going to be that much cheaper to manufacture. Just make smaller phones ie not HTC Titan size, and something smaller in the 3" range to save some on materials.

It would be like at this point saying you're just going to get 512 or 1 gig of RAM for your desktop or laptop. Are you really saving this metric ton of cash over 2 gigs of RAM these days anyways for low end desktops/laptops?

Not sure how deep anyone cares about this, but apparently Nokia has boosted Windows Phone sales and have also grabbed about 50% of all Windows Phone shipments already

Canalys have released their 2011 and Q4 2011 estimates, and have for the first time placed a solid number on Nokia’s Windows Phone 7 shipments.

They note 2.5 million Windows Phones were shipped in Q4 2011, with 1.2 million of those being by Nokia, giving it 48% of the market, remarkably close to the 45% we estimated from other data.

They also demolish the notion that Nokia shipped more Meego powered Nokia N9’s that Lumia handsets, saying only 0.6 million of those handsets were shipped then, close to the 0.5 million estimated by AllaboutSymbian.com.

Canalys says about Nokia:

“Its first Windows Phone products, the Lumia 800 and 710, along with the recently announced Lumia 900 through AT&T in the US, have improved the outlook for Nokia,” said Canalys Senior Analyst, Tim Shepherd. “They are well-designed, competitive devices that demonstrate innovation is still alive within Nokia. But the battle is not over and it has huge challenges ahead. Nokia must continue to build out its Lumia portfolio with devices tailored to address all price points and all the markets in which it aims to compete. It must hasten its transition from Symbian to Windows Phone around the world and, with Microsoft, promote and generate excitement for the platform and new products. And it must succeed in attracting more developers to build high quality, locally relevant apps.”

In total Canalys estimates 6.8 million Windows Phones were shipped in 2011, a pretty low number. With 2.85 million handsets shipped at launch in Q4 2010, that bring a total of around 9.65 million handsets shipped so far.

In total Windows Phone holds 1.6% of the market. This should increase in 2012 as Nokia increases its roll-out and Windows Phone itself rolls out to more countries such as China in the middle to later part of the year.

no mention of customization for the home screens on WP8? I really don't care (light theme/teal tile 4lyfe) but some fellow android owners gripe about it.

Eh, in Windows 8 you can't even change the BG of the metro screen, why would you be able to do that on WP8?

You can change the color of the bg in W8, but you can't put an image on there. Their reasoning was that the images would have to be massive. Understandable. People already hacked it in the dev preview though.

Carriers aren't even offering anything but the black Lumia 800. I'm a sad panda

I have mixed emotions about Mr. Watson leaving. On the one hand he's been at MS for years now, and everyone at sometime in their lives can feel the need for a change of scenery. I don't blame him, and Amazon is a great place to go work for.

On the other hand I can see people spinning this as Brandon Watson bailing especially since the job at Amazon doesn't exactly on the surface FEEL like he left to take a more higher up position else where. It feels very much sort of like a lateral move, and I've seen some comments even thinking it's a step downward.

I'm also mixed because I liked Mr. Watson a lot. I think he was really great in terms of getting the word out to developers and such. I'm much more favorable to Mr. Watson than I am towards Mr. Belfiore. That being said. I know some people think a change up for the platform might be a good thing, and maybe some new blood could help spark somethings.

IDK I'm much more saddened Brandon Watson is leaving where as I'm glad Stephen "Stepto" Toulouse is gone. Good riddance I say to that person.

anyone play Orbital? is there a way to see global leader boards? currently it only lets you view friends and I've smoked them all with my scores.

There seems to be a lot of shake up and moving around at Microsoft during the last few months but that is common I suppose. What do you think of the rumor of Windows Phone on Amazon?
