You guys need to learn some jedi mind tricks. I got my wife already using a Quantum, a co-worker got a Titan, and my brother is getting the Lumia 900. My sister is the only one insisting on an iPhone, which she'll get whenever her upgrade is due. In the meantime, she needed a new phone................so I made sure she got a Focus for Christmas. *evil grin*

Nicely done.

The woman is permanently using my Focus since her TMobile Nexus S died (She likes it so much she hasn't gone back even though the her phone has been fixed for months and it only has Edge Data)

Got my home girl using a HD7
Got my boy using a HTC Trophy
I'm using my Titan (coming from iPhone > iPhone 3G > iPhone 4 > Samsung Focus)

My Dad used the Focus for a month before the iPhone 4s came out (he was coming from a 3Gs) He has way too much invested in the Apple Store to keep WP7.

When my boy is up on Sprint i'll get him to upgrade (Hopefully Sprint has something not Gen1 by then)

I will need to do something similar with my Focus whenever I get me next phone.

In other Canadian WP news, the HTC Radar is coming to Saskatchewan (Sasktel). More Gen 2 phones finally coming to Canada. Where is the Focus S, Flash and Titan though.

Also: Unlocked Lumia 800 for $550

You got an Android phone?

Fringe = Windows Phone. The platform is so hipster right now. I like it because no one knows about it. Right guys? Right?? Getting an Android phone would be the equivalent of saying I just discovered this band called Radiohead. So awesome.

...

Those leaks today, though, I wasn't surprised too much about most of the upcoming changes. They all seem to be the likely evolution of the platform. But it's nice to see they are still prepping a big bat (albeit comparable to the big leaguers) to swing. Big question is will my Focus get some Apollo love, gut reaction says no, but MS has a history of supporting older devices if the Zune history is anything to go by. Also, NEW SOFTWARE? So that's what they've been teasing about something big on the horizon? Didn't expect that one. Hope they're finally going to release a native Mac client.

I'm really glad Apollo info is coming out now. My fear was we wouldn't have any concrete details by the time the Lumia 900 lunched ... and I wouldn't be able to say no to an upgrade.

With all the awesome features - more than I even hoped - I can now wait without reservation. I just hope Nokia brings out a hero Apollo phone with a form-factor much like the 900. Love the cyan color and polycarbonate unibody design.

I've decided I'm a year contract kind of guy instead of a two year contract now(are 1 year contracts even available anymore?). Way too many phones come out every year, and I can't take the gadget envy anymore. Two years with a phone is too long. I want that Cyan Lumia 900 bad.

e: I support this idea: "We are the 2%" so needs to be added this this thread's title.

should just be "Windows Phone |OT|".

btw, Microsoft never seems to market it as windows phone 7 or whatever, in the commercials its just windows phone. Which is what it should be.

If 1 year contracts were regularly available by all providers - I'd do it. Unfortunately they don't seem to be.

That said, it appears AT&T won't allow me to grandfather in my unlimited plan once I move to 4G ... so I suppose I'm open to switching to another carrier (Verizon does 1 year contracts IIRC).

Of course the problem then becomes ... what carriers actually have good high-end WP7 phones? At the point it's only AT&T ... so I'm back to square one. I suppose if Verizon gets the 900 (and their aren't leaks of specific Apollo phones with specs and release info) ... maybe I'll bite and then see what's available after the year.

I get this feeling, but phones have progressed to the point now where they can do all the basic tasks at a decently proficient clip. I feel sort of like last year was the turning point in that most every device that people have now can basically do just about anything any normal person would need without problems. Back in the pre Android 2.2 days and the pre iPhone 4 days I might not have said this.

I sort of feel like everything that needs to be can already be done currently. It's partly why I always feel bad when I complain about WP7 or any modern day tech device.

That being said he 2 year contract thing is sort of weird. It's always a 2 year contract these days, but the actual phone upgrade availability seem to come before the 2 years are up. I know I can get a new device in July, and I got my Focus launch week for WP7. July is only like 20 months not the full 24. I know my mom got an iPhone 4 a month after it launched, and she's already got an upgrade available. That's like only 17 months for her. How they judge these things I don't really know.

They give the Apple fans a bone. They go nuts for new hardware when they are announced. Somehow the fervor made AT&T bow and now they cater to iPhone users and they get their upgrade early. So its true, AT&T doesn't offer a year contract anymore? So basically the only way to get a new phone every year is to buy it off contract, or convince someone to give you their upgrade. Bah!

This is just wild speculation, but WP7 phones should be able to migrate to WP8. MS left WM6.5 users in the cold to move to 7, to do the same for WP8 would be platform suicide

Like I said though. I have WP device, and don't have to wait a full 2 years. It usually for all of my friends end up being somewhere in between 12-24 months. It's like they phone companies know when you're getting say to the 18 month part and close to the end of your contract that you are jonsing for something new. So they throw you a bone early.

Yeah, its not a full two years, but damn I'd love to get a new phone every year. I swear I will be going into the AT&T store and offering my first born when the Lumia releases.

Edit: just saw this, tell Microsoft how to promote Windows Phone. Alright Windows Phone-GAF, time to tell them how to market their damn phones. https://windowsphone.uservoice.com/forums/147665-advertising-and-promotion

Been using Launcher 7 on my Android phone for a few days now, and I think I'm sold on WP7 just from that little taste.

I almost went with WP7 over Android when it came time for my last upgrade, but I held back just because no stores near me allowed me to get any real hands on time with he OS, but after watching some videos today I really want one.

What's the best device on AT&T?

Titan, Focus S, right now, but wait just a bit longer, and you'll have Titan II and Lumia 900 which seem to be real winners.

I'm speculating that 2nd Gen phones would but don't know about 1st Gen. even iPhones and android phones can't upgrade after a couple of yrs, even less with android.

What exactly would the barrier be for 1st gen phones going to WP8? Clock speed and RAM?

Surely MS won't require dual core for it.

I think the ability to upgrade as early as 18 months into an at&t contract depends on a lot of factors, including how long you've been with them and whether you pay your bill on time every month and the size of your bill. I know that I'll be upgrading next spring at the latest. If the website gives me a hard time I just call and they hook me up after 18 months and I just pay a small upgrade fee. These contracts are very valuable to them.

That's a good point. Typically it's clock speed and RAM - but WP7's base requirements for those were already decent. So I really don't see any reason why gen 1 phones would automatically be out if gen 2 phones get the upgrade (unless it really needs more than 1GHz). Basically all released phones have 512MB and relatively similar SoC's ... so if I had to guess, it's either all or nothing in terms of gen 1/2 HW (though any 256MB phones that hit would be out).

What could happen however is that telcoms will simply not update older phones in an attempt to get people to upgrade. For this reason I wouldn't be shocked if gen 1 phones are axed ... just not because of HW constraints. Of course is you have an unlocked/etc phone, you may be able to upgrade.

I didn't consider the OS update via carrier thing.. being on a rooted Android device that's been out of my mindset for a while.

Is there such a thing as a WP7 development community, or rather stock ROMs available?

i'm on TMO here in the states and i was thinking of getting a new phone in the summer but i may just have to hold out til WP8, hopefully nokia can deliver a flagship phone on TMO by then...thats in the fall right?

seems so long from now.

I guess that they will have some pre-apollo phones out by summer.

Nokia produces a shitload of different models each year.

HTC Surround. Yay or nay?
Nay.
This isn't phone related, but have any of you tried MetroTwit on your PC? It is a metro style twitter app. If you love metro I recommend checking it out.

http://www.metrotwit.com/
I've been using it before it got popular.

No, seriously, I've been a user since v0.1a. I even made a thread about it (and people laughed at me and accused me for being some marketing guy :/)
I always use Rowi as my Twitter app for Windows Phone, which is made by the same people that made Metrotwit.
I highly doubt that.

There is a small enough installed base that you could probably break everything and not deliver Apollo to older devices and just work it as collateral damage. But it would be good to be supported. Its not like the technology is fragmented, so it should be fairly manageable to have software support both current and future phones.

I'd hope they hint at compatibility soon, in case it gives potential Lumia 900 users reason to hold off purchase (Like you). A commitment to supporting Apollo would let you jump in safely.

While everyone's concerned about compatibility, we shouldn't forget that they to scale Windows Phone DOWN to lower-end hardware.

The leaked info for WP8 looks very cool. If I can't upgrade my Focus I'll pretty pretty pissed though. Looking at it though do those seem like features that wouldn't run on the current hardware? Doesn't seem like it to me but what do I know?

New hardware features like NFC would obviously not work with Apollo on first and second gen devices, but the rest like native code support is just software.
