Double Fine Adventure Kickstarter project by Double Fine [ended, $3.3 Million funded]

I suddenly have the urge to go buy Trenched. I never did play it.

Schafer is NEVER going to want to deal with shitty publishers ever again after this.

Can't wait for the Psychonauts 2 kickstarter. That shit's gonna rock the house.

Whoa, I totally have to get on this.

*reads through thread* Of course people are complaining. They complained when James Rolfe asked for donations for his feature film, and they complain here.
I'm all for projects run on fan donations. Means less snotty producers sticking their fingers where they don't belong.

There's usually between 15k to 20k people who seem to regular the online gaming community. I'm kind of pulling that number from video view counts and page views from a number of sites I visit, so it isnt exactly science, that said, at this rate, by the time the number of backers reaches those sort of numbers, they should have made more than enough.

I was going to donate, cause this is so cool, but I think now I'll wait until they're well past their goal, that way my money will be more likely to encourage a Mac or iOS version.

I'm totally surprised by how close the $15 and $30 contribution numbers are (870 vs 774 as of this writing), since you don't get anything physical/tangible in the difference.

I mean, it's awesome, I was just expecting to see more like three or four $15 for every $30.

Fuck yeah? I will pledge at least $15.

edit: wow, goal already reached? I'm still going to pledge some money.

edit2: nevermind! the goal is 400k!

I can't imagine sitting down with Tim and Ron. I'd be speechless and in shock the entire time. Anyway, I'm definitely going to contribute what I can. This will probably end up being my game of the year, and nothing is even known about it (other than some character designs, if they're related to this). I can't see how it'll turn out bad.

Holy smokes, we just hit $100k!!! I think that's higher than the budget of Monkey Island! Adventure gaaaaaaames!!!

I really need to stay away from these forums. I wander into a thread out of curiosity and leave with a future -$15. I'll just call this my penance for not having played Stacking yet (can't wait for the PC version!). I'm a big fan of these community-driven efforts. As a matter of fact, I had actually been glancing around for something to support in the world of post-release Minecraft. This will due! :)

Did they just make 20k in like five minutes?

I love this idea so much. Turning the "if I had X amount of dollars I'd call up X developer and make them do this" fantasy a reality. Making my contribution now!

So are people who donate thousands actually investors or are they just giving money for swag?

I think it is people who are fairly well off wanting to help support a genre of games that they love.

This is where systems like Kickstarter can truly change the business of an industry. A smaller number of passionate supporters can make a project financially viable when it would not be otherwise.

Look at the board game section of the site to see great examples of this.

But if this is successful how will publishers eat?

Edit: Wow. 100k already.

Coming soon: Origin Kickstarter. Help us raise 1 million in 30 to keep origin running and keep access* to your games.

*unless you have a potty mouth, grind for loot, effectively PVP, or do other things we don't like.

Over a six-to-eight month period, a small team under Tim Schafer's supervision will develop Double Fine's next game, a classic point-and-click adventure utilizing modern touch technology.

What could "modern touch technology" possibly mean on a PC-Only (for now), Steam distributed game?

I'm already 30 bucks in the hole, but this one is puzzling me.

I just backed them with $30.

Man, shit like this makes me love the Internet just that much more. I hope more respectable game companies try something like this. User funding and self publishing on Steam so they don't have to deal with big corporate bullshit.
