Pour one out for Double Fine

I'm under the impression that a large quantity of individuals will be canceling their gamepass with a $10/mo increase
Let's say that there are 10 million ultimate subscribers. More than 3 million of them would have to cancel before MS is making less money than they are currently. Seems unlikely.

Double Fine has made a masterpiece with Psychonauts 2

Everything else from them tho, excluding the original Psychonauts, was trash

Not trash exactly, but meh. I dont see how they can be proffitable for MS.

Perfect scenario for MS would be tons of Team Cherry teams (3-10 talented devs) making indies

Doube Fine has 100+ employees. They must be a money sink for MS.

This doesn't even look like a game worth trying if you have GP tbh. Even if you just look at GP games, you better have finished Nine Sols and Hollow Knight if you plan to play this. ha!

Tim Schaffer is the type of director who likes to piss money away on niche games that don't sell.

I think once doublefine is done with, he'll find he'll have a very hard time finding the next suckers willing to bankroll his next game.

"Journalists" eating up your shit isn't enough to translate into real world results.

I'm getting sick of all the PlayStation worship and the crying when a damn game isn't on that platform, like the entire world is crumbling. Here's an idea: stop being an "only PlayStation" gamer and whole new worlds will open up to you guys.

jeez! just looked it up. double fine's first game was psychonauts (2005), a game which i love & have played multiple times. but everything since? aside from costume quest, which i got about halfway thru, & psychonauts 2, which i thought was somewhat disappointingly wholesome, i haven't really cared about or bothered with anything they've developed over the last 20 years! damn!...

Is that what you took from my post?

I think probably 99% of people on this forum have 2+ platforms.

Also, shut them down? No they sold it to Krafton. They went after double fine precisely, not attached to a huge bag of devs with a publishing house. You also conveniently don't mention ghost wire Tokyo. How much that cost? Mikami retiring, what's worth remaining in the studio? I can guarantee you that Hi-Fi rush and Ghostwire Tokyo probably costed more to make than the entire worth of the Double fine buyout. Hi-Fi rush production for animations and music is anything but « indie » in costs.
You're wrong. Microsoft literally closed them alongside the entire ZeniMax Asia branch, it wasn't until much later that Krafton acquired the offices, the Tango Gameworks trademark and the Hi-FI Rush IP, with also doing the effort of hiring close to 50% of the studio's staff that was left unemployed (as the rest of the people have already gotten jobs everywhere else). Basically rebuilding the entire thing.
Also, do you seriously think that anyone who isn't very known like Shinji Mikami (who wasn't even involved in Hi-Fi Rush, btw) isn't talented enough to be determined to keep their jobs? What's with that way of thinking?

I love Double Fine's games, but I have never heard of this game until I saw this thread. Microsoft is so incredibly bad at marketing, just the worst.

It was still part of the whole Bethesda package so we have no idea if they are wanted Tango game works, like, ever? Clearly they didn't. Shinji Mikami is of course a big piece. That's like Kojima studio without Kojima.

The free market has spoken. 🤷‍♂️ Hard to feel sorry for devs who put out art-house niche products that don't sell. Microsoft surely has to be getting tired of propping these kind of studios/games up.
The industry isn't about art anymore, at least the way we knew it, we've got High on Life and it serve it's purpose from Xbox perspective.

It had a quick trailer at the showcase and nothing more. It was very easy to miss and looked fairly unremarkable.
Too late, I'm already drunk, Instead of pouring it out, I drank the entire bottle.
This physically hurts me seeing the apathy and negative comments here.

You had a negative sounding title, now the negativity bled into the thread.

Have faith in the title you are looking forward to. Instead if this fails it will be partially your fault.

May I suggest looking into drugs that are less of a depressant than alcohol?

I don't have faith in the title, It has no dialog, meaning Tim Shaffer didn't write anything for this game.
It doesn't have much going for it. It's got weird atmosphere so there's that.
Not launching on all platforms and yes, it's going to bomb.

Keeper is going to bomb

No PlayStation at launch, increase in gamepass cost announced, no marketing

Xbox/PC players aren't gonna buy this. It was always doomed to be a "I'll give it a try on Gamepass" type of game. But Microsoft is ensuring it fails.

No reason to keep them around.

Cue the Double Fine being shut down and Tim Schaefer starting a new studio
Just out of curiosity: If Xbox and PC players aren't gonna buy this, then why does it matter whether it is also released on Playstation as well? Playstation players also aren't gonna buy it, then.

I believe they have multiple projects in the works, I'm sure they will be (double) fine. They fucked Tango off because Mikami bailed and they had nothing in the pipeline.

As long as Tim Schafer sticks around and they have another title coming out of pre-production I see no reason to be concerned.

I doubt microsoft cares about good PR when they just hiked up the price of gamepass and have destroyed any good PR they could ever have. Double Fine are in trouble unless the game hits big on gamepass and I can't see that happening. They can't spend years and years on a niche game and get little return on their investment.

I think they are handling them like Nintendo handles Bayonetta. it's like a "look, we're the good guys" move. so I think they are save for the time being
