Playstation Vita western launch thread | It only does everything, everywhere.

My games and memory card just shipped from amazon.

This has to be the best launch line-up I've been around for. There are 4 launch games I am illegitimately excited for: HSG, Wipeout, Stardust, and Uncharted. Most launches I'm lucky mildly excited for 1 (mostly just to see the graphics).

Are there supposed to not be any instruction manuals?

Got a few games early, only thing that was in one of them was an Online Pass slip.

in each game's livearea, there is an instruction manual. the only psp games i have downloaded to my vita are ff4 and ys 7, and they also have instruction manuals in their livearea.

Anyone knows where I can buy legit PSN codes online ? I tried everything you guys told me, but my Visa was blocked from PSN for 2 days.

If I buy PSN cards digitally from Gamestop.com, can I use them on the Canadian store ?

Sony has everything... except the sales bit. They need to learn the value of discounting their games. Gabe has laid out the statistics on this in the past: when a game goes on deep discount, they actually make MORE money by making it up in volume -- not only that, but once the game goes back to regular price, it sees a temporary increase in sales that continues to spike long afterwards. There is a science here that I hope Sony begins to notice.
I think the problem might be whether or not people are receptive, and in the case of PSP games attention's largely off of them now. Of course, this might be a reason beyond "we didn't give you the UMD Passport, sorry" to do some impressive sales once the Vita's been out for awhile, when people are starting to get tired of their launch titles they hack away at a ton of the PSP games to make them REALLY appealing to get, and thus rather than ignore the Vita they stock up (and maybe buy extra/bigger cards) and keep it around.

Gamestop peeps, have a question.

If I already did the bonus $25 trade in offer with my 3DS towards a Vita preorder, and then tomorrow decide to move that preorder money to Vita games instead of the system, will I lose my bonus $25?

It's probably been answered but I wouldn't chance it

I ordered my Vita and accessories on the 21st of January and my accessories and uncharted aren't coming until the 13th. I wish Amazon would ship the Vita on the 13th too.

I responded:

This is driving me nuts, no one had any problem adding a credit card to their PSN account ? Can I do so from the web instead of using the Vita ?

Is there a legit site I can purchase PSN cards from at least ?

BestBuy.com

Ordered one yesterday, but the code didn't arrive until this morning. Your experience may vary.

Did you try that?

I was having credit card issues today and yesterday too with my Visa, and I have no idea why.

I think now a days that is a prerequisite. But is that enough to make the average person go, I am going to put down my iPhone and pick up my Vita? Is that experience better on the Vita?

The point I am making is that I think the Vita would sell better (not necessarily be better to GAF) (thus have more traction, be more attractive to developers, thus have more opportunities for better experiences), if it was was a tablet experience (ie Android apps) that is also be the best d*** portable gaming experience around. You are not asking anyone to leave what they, know/love/want, and you are giving them the best gaming device out there.

Basically, Xperia Play - phone - hardware + Vita hardware.

Also, novelty is WHY a lot of people buy things. It is the hook.

I don't know, I kind of think that sometimes specialty devices actually work out better, business-wise. An Android tablet is always going to get compared to an iPad. Whenever I have my Android tablet somewhere, somebody goes, "Oh is that an iPad?" Nobody is going to think the Vita is an iPad. It's its own things, which I think actually works in favor of the Vita. Android tablets, as great as some of them are (and they are) have hardly any identity or brand recognition because of their constant comparisons to iPad, and I think it would hurt Vita for Sony to make it another tablet experience. Android apps are nice, but the Vita is not the device for them.

About Playstation Suite, I think it will be a minor success. Certainly better than the Blackberry situation. Look at minis. There's hundreds (thousands?) of minis, many of them being very good. And that was introduced on a five year old platform that wasn't selling very well. With Playstation Suite, they're not just developing games for Vita, but also smartphones and tablets. I think Minis would have even done better than they did if not for the PSP's control option limitations. It's amazing how well it did considering the circumstances, and PS Suite is absolutely certain to do better than the minis program.

Wipeout and Hot Shots shipped. I'm excited to get the games, but then again they'll just make the wait even harder. Still have twelve long days ahead of me.

Sorry, I thought you meant ordering a physical PSN card.

I'm afraid of purchasing them from Bestbuy.com or Gamestop.com, as I don't know if they will work on the Canadian store.

Are you from the US ?

Thanks by the way :)

Those darn Canadians got them early :( most americans have to suffer a couple of more days.

Also, the early bundle has a very sweet case.

It's a combination of Amazon Canada leaking a bunch early, some places in Europe leaking a bunch early, and the rest are just folks who imported the Japanese version.

Has anyone here actually acquired one from a U.S. retailer?

Also, I kinda have a problem with people who are buying the First Edition bundle just to have it early. The point of the FEB is to want all the included items. Otherwise you're just wasting money.

Aah, thanks. Feel a little better now ;p

Putting Android on Vita would sell more units. But if Sony can sell Vita without Android, it's better for them since they own the customer pool exclusively.

They can always release an Android extension later if push comes to shove.
They have the expertise.

For now, Sony intends to push PS Suite and Sony Entertainment Network services. Game developers are already working on PSSuite beta SDK. Popular apps like NetFlix, Hulu Plus, Maps, Facebook, NPR, College Sports, ... are already SEN partners.

These platform may not be as diverse as Android but they are actively supported by Sony since there are 50 million big and small Sony devices in US alone.

Basically, Xperia Play - phone - hardware + Vita hardware.

Also, novelty is WHY a lot of people buy things. It is the hook.

Android is not a novelty on Vita. It's a hygiene factor or nice-to-have. They will need to find very specific ideas to sell Vita to mainstream folks.

Argh. I still have no idea which launch game to get, and it's strange that none of the games interest me except hustle king. -__-'' Gaf, what would you recommend?!

I am betting that we are going to see tons of discounts/sales like we did for 3DS games right after launch.. If that is the only one you are interested in, maybe just wait on some others?

i only have wipeout, modnation, and stardust, so i can't really talk about other games. wipeout is fantastic though, so i recommend it.

Would you recommend modnation? How is the single player campaign? Is it worth it if I don't plan to use the editor much?

The screenshots you posted earlier convinced me to buy it. It certainly doesn't look generic at all.

Is it native res?

So the official Sony travel case...
It doesn't open wide enough. So you have to be careful when putting the Vita inside or the zipper might scratch something. I just put my Vita in the case right now to let it charge since I have to go out to do some shopping. It scared me so much putting it in there.

I regret the $20. I should've waited and bought a Hori case or something.

I played with it for about 5 hours and the thing is covered in fingerprints. I need to get some microfiber cloth but I can never find them for sale anywhere. Always just in packs of other cleaning stuff I don't want.

Also, I'm not much of a digital download person. I intend to go physical for most things. I kind of regret spending $100 for the 32GB card. I was going to put music and videos (for the delicious screen!) on it, but the content manager is so not-good. And it only seems to recognize my mp4's.

i'm sorry to say (as a modnation fan) that modnation is a disappointment. it controls great, the effects are there, and it has a bunch of content, but the framerate is awful. it also runs at sub-native res (for those that care). if you're a diehard modnation fan, you would probably enjoy it since it controls so well, but you'd have to be overlooking the flaws.

i say you try it on a demo unit and see if you can look past the framerate. i will be honest that after a few races it was far less noticeable.

i believe it is.

just realized we havent heard of the killzone game since the vita reveal.

Hopefully that means it's getting a proper treatment. It's being done by Sony Cambridge, right? They're a pretty good studio. I'd love to see a really full online multiplayer and good singleplayer. We'll see.

It's weird, because I saw your screenshots, which made the game look TERRIBLE. Beyond terrible, really. But when I played it at Gamestop, I could have sworn it was native res. At the very least, it looked way better than those screenshots conveyed. The framerate issue alone, though, which I also experienced, kind of ruins it for me.

Disheartening :/

are you referring to this case?http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B006PP41Q8/?tag=neogaf0e-20

I swear, United Front better handle LBP racing a lot better on the tech front more than Modnation. LBP has great potential.

That case is definitely poorly designed. It's a shame the Starter Kit Bundle cast isn't being sold outside of that bundle at the time being. I wish that it was available for purchase on its own.

While I was first bothered my the fingerprints on my iPhone a few years ago, I quickly got over it. About six months ago I bought an iPad, and I don't think I've properly wiped the screen down since I bought it. It's still clean (so it's not gross), but there are some fingerprints on. I guess it's just one of those things I got used to!

I'm a little interested in Ninja Gaiden all of a sudden. I had the original Xbox version but never completed. I ended up getting really far in it but went on vacation for a week which was apparently enough time to rust up just a enough to never get past the segment I was at.

Wipeout seems to be the game people are most excited about. I've really only ever played HD, and it was good (though tough, especially the trophies).

But my question is what are people looking forward to with 2048? What is it about this title that is different or new from the other Wipeouts? Is it just as simple as people who buy CoD every year because they love the multiplayer, so it's just new maps (and in this case, tracks)?

I'm not really a modnation racer fan at all, but I was thinking about giving it a go for $30. Think I'll skip for now. Thanks for the impressions!

I am a little too, even though they neutered Sigma and made it easier than Black. I just don't know what game to get at launch.

Yes, that is the case I am talking about.

And if you're not going to keep the charger/cable in there, there's too much room. It's like about twice as wide as it should be. So the Vita kinda moves around a bit, which makes me uneasy.

Damn not good.. Amazon already shipped mine.
It sounds much bigger than I wanted.. I assume sticking in your pocket is out of the question?

People really have smartphones on the brain, it seems.

It didn't dawn on me until the other day, listening to my co-workers jabber on about their various smartphone games that some people just really, really like those styles of games. I can't fault them for it, any more than I can fault my love for an Uncharted or a God of War.

I work at Capcom/Beeline Interactive. We make the Smurf's Village game, among others, but Smurf's is our bread and butter. I deal with Android and iOS devices every day at work.

I've owned my smartphone for almost a year now, and when I first got it, I was all over downloading apps like crazy. Playing all sorts of free and cheap games, but after a few weeks, it wore off, and none of those games were doing it for me. Cute distractions isn't what appeals to me as a gamer. Yes, I have Angry Birds on my phone. I've played it a total of about 30 minutes. It's certainly fun, but sometimes a guy just wants something with a little more, er, meat on it's bones.

The Vita is scratching an itch I've had since I first saw the original Game Boy when it released and I was 10 years old. For 22 years I've been dying for a portable device that truly captured what it was like playing the big boxes I had hooked up to my TV. There was always some kind of limitation to what a portable device could do. Whether it was horsepower or input options.

The Vita doesn't need an "Android" OS hook, or a bunch of apps. It's hook is that it has a 5" OLED screen. It has a touchscreen and rear touch pad. It has dual analog sticks. And the biggest hook of all: It plays games that look only marginally different from their console counterparts. No genre or style of game is out of reach for the Vita.

We put up with a lot from the PSP and DS because of their limitations. They couldn't do certain genres very well. The PSP's lack of a second analog stick made 3rd person shooters a chore to play. The lack of a touch screen hindered the type of games possible on the system. The DS had the touchscreen, but lacked the horsepower to create some truly ambitious games.

The Vita doesn't have those hindrances. If you want big, console style games, you got them. If you want smaller, "app-friendly" fair, you got it. You want a shooter that doesn't have you wrestling with the CLAW or other shoehorned control schemes, you got it.

Not everybody wants the same thing, so thank GOD for options. The Vita isn't trying to woo that person obsessed with Smart Phones or Tablets. The Vita is clearly aimed towards a gamer that wants a true gaming handheld. Apps like Netflix, Twitter, Facebook are the bonus, whereas, on Smart phones and tablets, it's the reverse; social apps are the main draw, and the games are the bonus.

I don't plan on using my phone for gaming anymore, because it just didn't click with me (no buttons, no real sense of feedback while playing; disposable titles with very few gems; most games cut from the same cloth, etc). I'm dying to get my hands on a Vita, because I want to play some games on a machine that was built for that purpose from the ground up. If I want to send my friends some messages on Twitter, there about a million other ways to do that. When I fire up my Vita, believe you me, it's because I want to get some serious gaming in. Finding out what internet drama my friends and family are up to isn't what my gaming handheld is for.

I agree with this. I am on par with smart phone gaming trailing off. I do play games on my iPad, but those are games that are specifically better with a touch screen (Aquaria, Machinarium). I've been waiting for something like the Vita for a while, and I think time will tell with the system. It has the power to please fans of any audience and also go anywhere. That's what has got me so excited for the system. Whether you're a fan of first person shooters or RPGs, there is the opportunity for some amazing games on this system.

well, it takes place during the first anti-grav racing competition ever, so it's kind of a big deal for old-school wipeout fans. it has all-new tracks, that are much wider than wipeout hd. i think they might be wider because of a faster speed class but i can't confirm yet as i haven't played through the whole game. the tracks also have a lot of shortcuts now.

the online multiplayer is interesting. it's an actual campaign in itself where you have objectives to complete. you also have the ability to play 4 tracks from wipeout hd (only in the online mode though) with ps3 players. another little neat thing is it can take pictures of you online and you can see what i look like when i beat you*.

*i'm terrible, actually.

I saw the FEB one and thought all of them would be the same. But the FEB one is different from the Starter Kit one is different from the standalone one. I don't get why they did that...
The standalone one seems to be the worst.

The only other touch device I have (not counting DS because stylus) is my Cowon S9. I bought a special screen protector for it that is fingerprint resistant. I only have to clean it like once a week.
Maybe I'll get used to it.

Go to an eyemart store. They sell them in three packs.
I don't have an eyemart here that I know of. But I'll check out other glasses shops (assuming that's what eyemart is). Thanks for the tip. I never even thought about glasses.

Damn not good.. Amazon already shipped mine.

Yeah there is no way that's going in a pocket. It's about 5cm tall and 20cm wide. I don't really even have room for it in my hand bag.
Maybe you'll hate it less than I do? I'm always worried about everything.

EDIT: I think 1 inch is about 2.5 cm. So um... 2 inches tall and 8 wide?

Machinarium: Yes. Aquaria: No. I don't like playing it on iPad.

The shortcuts, strangely, are the most appealing thing to me. I love a good racing track with shortcuts.

Still, I'm not seeing the hype. I mean, again, if you love Wipeout and you're just like "SWEET NEW TRACKS!" that I get. But people seem to really like this game, and it isn't even 60fps. Hope there's a demo.

oh yeah another thing to add. there's 5 racing teams. each team has four ships to unlock. you unlock them gradually throughout the campaign. they aren't just different skins like previous games. one team's 4 different ships look different and have different stats.

for example, feisar's ships:

speed, fighter, agility, and prototype. the prototype starts slower than the other ships in the race, but going over speed pads will actually make it go faster than that event's speed class.

Well, I saw good comments about this case back when it was released in Japan, and thats why I ordered this case. And after reading your impression, I am starting to get worried. Its already shipped so I can't cancel the item...well I will have to see.
