Mass Effect 3 Demo Impressions [Online Open To All]

After recently playing through Deus Ex: Human Revolution with its semi-futuristic-cyper-punk-film-noire feeling I was actually shocked at seeing Earth in this demo. Everything seemed to clean, futuristic, and shiny. Obviously the two games are in different universes and set many, many hundreds of years apart. But, I still was surprised nonetheless.

In terms of what I saw in the demo: There was very smooth and fluid gameplay. After playing the other ME games I was shocked at seeing Shepard run and move with so much agility. This new engine never seems to slow down in a battle.

Also, the cut scenes are visually excellent. Very clean and colorful. The draw distances a very nice.

But, the facial animations haven't seen much improvement. They get the job done but otherwise don't excitement me. I don't think anyone expected it, but this game can't even compare to L.A. Noire in the mouth-movement category.

Finally, what happened to Ashley Williams' face? Does it better then the first pic we all saw of her? Yes. Does it still look strange? Yes. It appears as if she had some cheap plastic surgery done. This makes no sense to me as she looked much, much better in ME1.

Music: Really good but I already expected that since I enjoy everything Clint Mansell does.

Seriously...I have tried that stupid facebook app 4 times and still cannot get a code! What the hell am I doing wrong? I try doing the patter they show you, then i try doing the x technique and neither seem to be working! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH I want to play this NOW! :(

So I just found out the PC version of this doesn't have controller support so this essentially guarantees I will be getting the Xbox 360 version; though I was 90% sure I would do that anyways, this just sealed the deal. I will certainly try the PC demo but for me nothing can beat a controller on the couch. I eagerly await the "You prefer something different than me, stop it" replies at my controller dedication.

Are you serious? That's bullshit. Mass Effect feels like balls with a keyboard and mouse (even though that's my defacto choice for shooters). Guess I'm getting the 360 version.

The past 2 games didn't have controller support either...

Why would you be surprised and act like this is an outrage?

That said, I do agree, playing ME2 right now on PC maxed out, and it looks great but I would rather play with my 360 gamepad.

Because people expect developers to learn from their mistakes. There's no excuse to not have it. Pretty much every dev supports it on PC, and a lot of them even make the game switch back to a PC UI when you unplug the controller. There's no excuse.

No controller support is confirmed?

Bioware why? You're like the only dev who puts AAA games on PC who still does this shit!

really? come on dude. Mass effect plays a LOT better on the mouse and keyboard interface than a pad. Its just fact. You do realize that if we get pad support we dont get the PC interface we have been getting, and trust me, thats a lot more important to pc gamers than PAD support. And only RECENTLY, has that miracle you mention of PC interface happening once you unplug controller, happened. Hell, most developers still lack this option. Witcher 2, deus ex and the indie games and valve games. Other than that, what do we have that gives us a full pc interface made for our controls? only now developers are starting to do it. Hitman, borderlands 2 are a few examples. However, then you get games like skyrim, amalur, and almost every shooter out there that has console interface. We dont want consolized games, we want a good port with pc assets. The previous games didnt support it and this wont and thats a good thing. Having a WHEEL PAUSE menu is absolutely atrocious compared to what we have now which works perfect. If they ever add support for pad on bioware, i will never buy a game from them again. Its consolized enough, and now you want pad?

I've played ME2 on 360 and PC and like just about every game out there I'll take the pad. It's just more comfortable and easier to use for me, and it plays no part in the game being "consolized".

If you're petty enough to never play a game over an option then you should probably just quit this hobby.

Because I've never played ME on PC? I just assumed it would have pad support because most games with console ports have 360 pad support.

I would like to play ME3 on PC...hmmm

After beating me1 on 360 I got it when released for PC. I would never go back to the 360 controller, and playing the demo just confirms this.

Wow, I just finished an Engineer run, and I think I'm loving this class more than I ever had in the past now with the new Turret you can equip PLUS the regular combat drone out at the same time - purr distraction plus hitting enemies on all sides. On top of that, I maxed the turret with the choice for a long-range rocket launcher, and it was just great how I was hardly the focus of the enemy, and even if I was, the combat drone was stunning the enemy in the back and the turret was shooting with bullets and rockets.

Even nicer is catching a couple guys in Liara's singularity and leaving the rest to the turret, and anyone else I'd knock down with Garrus' Concussive Shot, and pick off anyone else - that's about 5 or 6 enemies out of commission before I even fire my gun. Love it.

Is there a way to transfer the ME2 savefile from Xbox 360 to PC to use it to import previous decisions into the PC-version of ME3?

http://www.masseffectsaves.com/tools.php

Gibbed's Save Editor. You should be able to open the 360 save mod it if you want and then save it in the PC format.

I didn't like how ME1 played with KBM. If it's improved since then, I'm down.

It has. I prefer my pad for every game almost without question, but the ME series is one of the few few games I prefer with KB&M. Bioware did a great job in the ME2 with the PC interface and controls. And being a shooter having the precision and accuracy of a mouse is a great bonus. Plus the visual fidelity is so much better on PC with much higher textures, 1080p, AA and 60FPS, so even if you still happen to prefer the 360 pad over the KB&M it still worth it in my opinion.

Ha, Masseffectsaves STILL, two years later, has just two Paragon/Jack romance save.

I guess I'll have to replay to make up for that lost save. Unless the PC version is going to have that mini-game/novel thing like the PS3 had?

What am I reading here. Mass Effect plays wonderfully with a keyboard and mouse.

I disagree. I am primarily a PC gamer, however, Mass Effect plays great with a game-pad, especially in the area of selecting abilities and commanding your squad.

Using the number keys to select powers for your squad to use is far slower and less intuitive than it is on the 360 controller, especially with the addition of Kinect support.

I am a self proclaimed graphics whore, but the controls are enough to make me get ME3 on 360 first.

(I will double dip later on when it goes on sale on steam and enjoy maxed graphics and texture packs, but be sure the gameplay will be less enjoyable for me)

Who uses the number keys? Hold down shift and it works exactly the same as on 360.

Yeah, figured it wasn't going to support controller again. I'm staying on PC because I've played on PC since the first one and have all my imported shepards there.

Playing the PC versions of the Mass Effect series on the couch with a controller is possible with a little effort, (I purchased Pinnacle Game Profiler because I found it easier to make my own configurations than with other similar programs) Mass Effect 1 isn't ideal but it's workable, Mass Effect 2 is pretty damn good because the controls are simpler and the "streamlined" PC interface (compared to ME1) and K+M controls mimics the controller enough in many ways too.

With the profile I created for ME2 it works flawlessly, dare I say even better and comfortable than the console versions in my opinion, because I have assigned all of the quick slots to button combinations, that way I'm able to instantly use 8 different powers without needing to pause the action, I just hold LB and either ABXY for the first 4 powers, or hold LS+ABXY for the other 4 powers. switch weapons pushing left or right on the D-pad, or command my squad by holding left or right on the D-pad. I can even Quicksave/load by tapping/holding up on the D-pad. If I ever need to access the powers menu I don't need to hold RB like in the console versions, just tap it to enter the menu, make adjustments and tap it again to exit the menu.

The only thing I miss is analog walking but it's a small trade-off.

The same people who just use the buttons on the 360?

You can play mass effect in real time, or play it by pausing and assigning each move, or a mix of both...(most people do this).

In ME2 on PC which I just gor done playing an hour ago, holding shift pauses the game then you click on powers at the bottom of the screen.

On 360, a power wheel pops up and simply pressing the joystick in the direction of the power pulls it up automatically.

It is faster, that is a fact.

Now if you want to see a game by Bioware that has much better controls on PC than on 360 look no further than KOTOR for PC. THAT is a great example of making the PC play better.

As for Mass Effect, the series plays better on 360 and looks better on PC.

It will, but you could just use Gibbed's save editor I linked to and just change the save file to your liking with a little work.

Hopefully Gibbed or someone else will make an ME3 save editor that provides a simple and straight forward save editor that we can easily modify ME2 choices like we currently can with ME1.

I've been trying since yesterday, still nothing.

While I hate being nitpicky, I don't like the new look of the conversation wheel. The whole blue-and-red scheme just doesn't sit right with me. :p

Ahh, replayed again for a third time with a female created character. I gotta say, I really do like the voice acting of Hale compared to Meer, a lot of lines from the demo just hit the right nerves compared to Meers more static performance. And I'll say, I've never had a problem with Meers previous acting abilities, since I've preferred Meer each time. But this time, Jennifer just does a really nice job.

I wonder what this means for the renegade/paragon options now? Since the wheel defaults blue and the choice you've scrolled over is red. No more colored win text!?

Upgrade Throw to detonate, reset after detonation, and have two throws at once.

Combined with Lift Grenade, Cluster Grenade or Liara's singularity, and it's pretty much unstoppable.

Like, it's insane.

You're doing it wrong on PC if you select powers by using shift + clicking them. Much faster to simply press a button like 1 or 2. The only times i use the shift menu for powers is to drag them in the action bar when i change squadmates.

I just finished, did two runs through. They weren't kidding about the increase in difficulty. I found the cooldowns for the adept frustrating but like others have said I think this was due to the forced weapon usage slowing down the cooldowns. I also played as an engineer and it was fun, fully upgraded turret and slightly upgraded drone made the run much easier.

I played ME2 as a renegade Vanguard on normal and paragon Infiltrator on Insanity. I think I might go renegade adept on normal and Engineer on insanity. The two additional distractions seem like they would be very helpful on insanity.

Please.....anyone! I want a code so badly! I created fake fb's just to try n get a code. I have probably entered codes 20x's and haven't gotten one yet. What should I do?? I have to work all day tuesday and won't get the chance to play it much during the week. :( :( :(

So I'm the only one that has mentioned the contrast?

The black crush is the worst I've seen, and I'm not usually one to care about that. Colors are extremely saturated. Half a character can be almost entirely black, and not due to the lack of light. Just huge gobs of black areas obscuring all detail.

I'd boot the demo up and look for some video settings to correct this, but I don't want to watch the intro ever again.

Sentinel. You simply cannot beat having Overload, Warp, Throw and most especially Tech Armor on Insanity. Going against Scions and Praetorian and Collectors just spamming Warp was beautiful especially with both Thane and Miranda. So is Miranda and Garrus for Overload just frying people and mechs. So I would be surprised if this wasnt the case again in ME3.

Are you trying through that mass effect app on facebook? I just tried to get one for you and it says no more codes left :(

HAHAHA.

Im sorry but in the context of the post I was responding to your response is hilarious.

Played as all the classes and I'm really hyped up for the games release now. Still have a few issues in combat, heavy melees missing the target for no good reason, grenades seemingly disappearing, myself fumbling with the cover system (I still prefer the system from the original game, suck it haters!) but overall it's an improvement. Soldier class is still horrifically boring though.

The way she calls out Wrex's name just before he jumps out the shuttle is perfect, Meer sadly just shouts it out with no nuance. Saying that, I like them both.

Am I the only one who finds Wrex's voice acting off. His radio chatter on Sur'Kesh sounds weird and too high pitched and light, its not gruff and low. Its been bothering me a bit.

Yes, completely agree.

He doesnt sound bad on the drop ship or on the grown when he jumps out, but when Wrex is trying to yell while youre fighting its just off. I dont think Steven Barr can maintain the same rough voice when trying to yell and be loud and emotional.

The only thing better about the cover system in the first game was that if you used it you were playing the game wrong.

The only thing worse about the cover system in ME2/ME3 is that you must use it.

Also, running in a straight line on the narrow paths at the start of the game is impossible, you are drawn to the sides. The animation is awful. Every time you jump Shepard slows down, even if you're still holding the A button down. To run again, you need to release it and press it again. You can't run at all if the camera isn't behind Shepard, if you're looking to the side he will ignore your command. You can't do a turn while running, you're stuck running more or less forward. Since cover, roll and interact are all on the A button, if you try to take cover or pick something up but aren't in the right spot, Shepard will instead roll.

What the hell?
