Mass Effect 3 Demo Impressions [Online Open To All]

4. If the Reapers fear humanity so much to attack it first and shep in particular for messing up their plans, it would figure that they would nuke the planet from orbit instead of leading a ground invasion. Not even the human husks are an excuse, as they are so much weaker than the other alien species ones (besides the fact that there is plenty of raw material in the colonies).

This doesn’t make sense because they want the humans for their next reaper(s) so why destroy the planet with the highest concentration of humans? (the other human colonies can’t match what’s on Earth.

I think having earth blown to bits would have a bigger emotional impact than a kid in a ventilation system, for an opening to the third game... making it a tail of revenge.

As Hitchhiker guide proved, a good story can start from having the earth destroyed. :)

Then again, it´s scifi, it doesn´t have to make sense, i guess saving earth for the 100th time is as good a plot as we are going to get.

But, who said that the Reaper have arrived to destroy Earth / humans?

You people jump to conclusions to fast...

Its probably just the music that made people feel emotional. If the kid scene had some generic hollywood epic music, no one would have cared. The music did all the job, thank you Mansell.

How much of the score did Mansell do though? Bioware made it sound like it was solely going to be his talent, but if the main menu theme is apparently done by Sam, there's likely a bunch of other tracks not scored by Mansell.

Seeing an actual child perish gives me a much larger emotional response than seeing an inanimate object like Earth get blown up...that could just be me though.

I concur, however, I think he made that point because we play as a human in ME3. Thus it would make it much more personal.

That said, Reapers never destroy planets just the inhabitants; and then also they don't wipe them completely (i.e. collectors).

Because... thats what they do? Cull if not exterminate intelligent life in the galaxy every X number of years.

During the demo they seemed to be doing a bang up job of it. :)

Possibly, but why start killing everyone when they arrive? would be more efficient to launch a massive "collector" swarm to paralyze everyone. They seem to be turning people into husks, which we haven´t seen so far, to be raw material for new reapers.

You could also say keepers.

They don't need every human, plus they have to weaken them first, so they don't get in the way of killing off everybody else. We don't even know if they have been capturing humans or not, so it's a bit premature saying they are just killing everybody.

Good point. Now that the collectors are mostly a lost resource to the reapers, humanity might be next in line as a slave race, to either help with the galaxy wide extermination and/or prepare for the next time around, much as the collectors/keepers did.

I wonder if we'll see reaper indoctrination in action, or if they've forgotten about that whole plot point and everyone is just turned into husks now.

When did they say that? The only time they've mentioned mansell is in a press release with 4 other composers, and music from all 5 of them is in the demo.

Throw in me in the group disappointed about the lack of a trial. It's a missed opportunity I think. Would have served as a nice, quick recap of some of the shit we've done in the last two games, and a logical continuation of Arrival into the new game. Instead ME3 starts at the end of the trial.

I agree. I was really looking forward to that. I was hoping it would be a more in depth version of Tali's trial.

There's no question that Mansell's music is amazing in the demo. I just wish the intro was as high quality.

Or maybe you could just try putting forth your own opinion without denigrating the opinions of others.

It's almost Valentine's Day! Give it a shot!

How am I denigrating others? The intro literally has nothing to it except explosions. Things blow up and people die. That is the intro in one sentence. You're welcome to like the intro, but there isn't anything in the intro besides things blowing up.

If you're not wowed by video game explosions, I can't imagine what could've wowed you about that intro.

Mass Effect had been smarter in the past. I just have this sinking feeling that the story is getting more stupid as it hurtles irrevocably towards its conclusion.

The intro literally solves a political debate with the line "We fight, or we die!", followed by an explosion that kills everyone that didn't believe Shephard.

I wonder if we'll see reaper indoctrination in action, or if they've forgotten about that whole plot point and everyone is just turned into husks now.

Giant terminator babies for everyone!

and people were hoping for a trial akin to chrono trigger.

I'd love one too, but if the games opens exactly where the demo does I will be extremely pissed. Bioware can't seem to keep the opening to ME games secret. If we didn't get to play the demo scene and know about
the reapers attacking earth in the game's opening
I don't think people would be as upset.

The first ever mention of Mansell doing the OST was in February, and that was around the time when Jack Wall and Sam were said to have been replaced. The other 4 composers were only stated to be working on the OST as well in December. (Which I just found out)

On another note, I'm glad Christopher Lennertz is composing, his Shadow Broker pieces were marvelous.

....A lot of things.

-The tension that was evoked when going to the military council, knowing something big is coming
-The Reapers finally landing
-Seeing several actual animated Reapers in the background leveling everything
-While walking along the building, a Reaper actually lands smack dab in front of you
-The sound effects of the Reapers and ensuing battle was amazing (in Dolby 5.1)
-The scene at the end with the child. The music and the scene meshed together beautifully...I honestly got a feeling of hating to leave the Earth like that. It genuinely made me feel like staying and wanting to fight instead of running off, but ultimately it has to be done, to come back to later.

The intro literally solves a political debate with the line "We fight, or we die!", followed by an explosion that kills everyone that didn't believe Shephard.

There is nothing political about it. They're asking what options do they have, both diplomatically and militarily. Shepard already says they take no prisoners and will have no pity on them, so that takes any diplomatic option out of the equation. And what military advice can he really give at the moment? Even Shepard doesn't really know the best strategy yet to take them out, so yea, fight, or die. "The only thing they can do", as it's put.

I did the course and the Course Completed banner isnt appearing on the homepage. Its still saying "Complete the Course to play the demo!" and then when I click that it says I've already completed the course.

Wait...no trial? As in the beginning of the demo = beginning of the game? Can someone confirm this?
That would be lame as hell. If that's the case they could have simply skipped Arrival and said "After the Suicide Mission Hackett and Anderson asked Shepard to go back to Earth to be interrogated about his connection with Cerberus" or something like that.

Was thinking this myself. I got the impression it was a court case of some sort? Much more serious that what the demo shoes.

And I thought the opening of the demo was a lot like a film. The part where
where the kid is flying the ship, which you think is real beforehand
as well done.

-Do it in Internet Explorer
-Put down "Retail Sales Associate" as your occupation with Wal-Mart
-Codes could be out, only available for the first 60,000 or something

Also the demo must be a old build.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phLGBo6ACNE

In this build the buildings are on fire plus you see some AA guns firing in the Sur Kesh demo.

Demo builds are generally separate from the actual game build. They didn't and couldn't just cut a snippet from the main game last week and use it as a demo but rather the demo was pieced together months ago and updated as the actual game went along.

This demo has been around since at least last fall, so it's not surprising it's not completely up to date especially since it had to be sent to both MS and Sony for approval some weeks ago and the actual game only just went gold last night.

A while back it was confirmed that the piano theme in the demo was Mansell's. I'm willing to bet that he wrote most of the thematic/non-action cues in the game.

Absolutely loving the tracks I've been hearing lately from the soundtrack... trying not to listen to many but they're too good. I'm glad they've gone back to that ME 1 style.

Mostly stuff that's not in the demo like Track 6, Track 12 and Track 17.

I think Mass Effect 2 is my most listened OST ever, I've listened to individual tracks on it 200 - 300 times each.

These ones sound ME1 influenced which is badass.

FUCK I CAN'T WAIT1?@!?

Can some of you cool it with the leaked script subtle spoilers? I know a lot of you that have read it and when you start alluding to stuff it is obvious. Thanks!

What subtle script spoilers? All everyone is discussing is stuff from the official demo and official statements from ME3 devs and forum mods.

Man Mark Meer really stepped up his game since ME1.

Meer is an amazing live performer.

If anyone gets the chance, take a trip to the Edmonton Fringe this summer and check out Gordon's Big Bald Head.

I've watched Improv/stand-up comedy for most of my life and Meer is the most consistently funny man I've met.

Giant terminator babies for everyone!

That is my worry too. I have anticipated this launch for a while, have the days off and pre-ordered the collectors edition, so to say I want to love the game is an understatement. The demo just kinda turned my excitement down and I mean way down to the point that I am pretty sad and no longer look forward to March 6th as I did before.

I guess I just don't like the direction they took the series and it just doesn't seem like they have fixed our complaints. I get the feeling we are going to get the same treatment ME2 got, with a lot of shit just getting "fixed" in the worst possible way.

This scene didn't connect with me at all. It was just a cheap ploy for an emotional reaction. Put Captain Anderson fighting back a wave of husks before I leave and show that I have no choice but to leave. That will grab at my heart. Or they could have put any previous squaddie from Me2 in his place(even Jacob) and I would have felt for them emotionally.

Bioware.. I am disappoint.....

Guess it just depends on each individual's level of emotional response then. I don't see how it was "cheap". Yes...it's obvious it was there for emotional impact, that was the whole point.

Anyway, don't worry, I'm almost positive other characters you know and love will have something to that effect and will "grab your heart."

You can connect to the EA servers now. Just played a few matches and it is REALLY hard plus the fact that the camera is closer to your character than it is in singleplayer doesn't help.
