Playstation Vita western launch thread | It only does everything, everywhere.

Just saw some Burning Skies footage from the blog video and, man, that really looks AWFUL.

A snippet of gameplay in a simplistic hallway fighting annoying "bug" enemies with a framerate that is always below 30 fps. How is that acceptable?

If the Vita came with only one Analog Stick, how many of you would still be buying?

I know I wouldn't.

About 99% sure that I wouldn't either. For me one of the biggest draws was to have a near console like experience that I can take on the go with me, and I feel like a Vita with one stick wouldn't provide that for me.

So all PSP games work...provided to d/l to your PS3 first?
Most of them in the end it seems. Maybe SCEA and some publisher sit on their asses and allow holes to develop, but I'm hoping that if there's oversights it's mainly limited to games that WILL NOT work for some reason in the PSP emulator, or are delisted and thus in an awkward position like Brave Story.

I'm sure I'd still end up buying it. I mean, I purchased a 3DS last year at launch even when there was virtually no software I was really interested in. :\

The second analog stick IS a big deal, however, and finally allows for what has become standard console controls to become possible. Dual sticks are used in just about every genre these days so shipping without them would really limit what could be done. A lot of PSP games really suffered with only one stick.

Crazy question, do the approved PSP games on VITA PSN have manuals? I thought I saw one in a video the other day.

This is really irrelevant at this point isn't it?

Completely.

Still, I expect you to answer the question. I suspect it wouldn't matter for some but it's pretty much the main draw for me.

Honestly, I'm hoping that devs get screwed in sales for shit like this. I don't care about FPS that much, but I saw similar footage and was really let down by it (amongst other things).

I seriously hope sifting through the sea of Vita games isn't going to be as painful as it was going through the PSP library. While there were some amazing games on PSP, there were a lot of super terribad games, too.

Yeah, I've noticed that the chimera burst into 15 fps lumps upon death. They have to get it running smoother before launch

Can someone tell them that on the bottom of the handheld is a door that holds a memory card. Open it and push and a card I guarantee you will come out. This is included in FEB and Demo units and probably even press kits.

I though I saw in the unblocking of thr FEB video that the 4GB card came in the standard retail packaging

That sucks... I wonder when the first good FPS will come to Vita? I really enjoyed Resistance: Retribution and Resistance 3 so I was hoping the next entry in the series would keep up in terms of quality. I can't say I'm surprised that it doesn't look like it will though.

KZ probably, Cambridge has some crazy talented folks.

What games does this fictional one stick Vita have? If it has Mario Kart and Super Mario 3D Land, I'm in.

we already said we don't want established franchises born from consoles and ports already! ;)

Isn't optimization like one of the last things that happens in development? Burning Skies is still some months off. Performance can still be improved for release. I don't know why people are already writing it off.

Although I guess the developer doesn't have a very good history.

I'm not confident in that game getting cleaned up in the next couple of months.

It's a typical GAF double-standard, they complain about the same old devs pushing out the same tired crap that exploits the consumer with poor practices like glitchy releases, DRM, expensive DLC...but they won't give a growing developer the first chance for projects like this that help build their skillsets and experience.

The cover of Resistance: Burning Skies is pretty nice looking, though. Too bad the blue box detracts from it (not a fan of boxes colored anything non-neutral).

Sure but it just seems premature to write it off so soon. But eh... not like I have any interest at all in the game so... let the bashing continue.

On your friends list can you see when your friends last sign in was like the PS3?

Not that I can see. And the list seems to just be sorted alphabetically. On the PS3, it's like, the last person to sign off is at the top of the offline portion of the list.
Not really relevant, but another "missing" feature I notice is that there's no obvious way (to me at least) to set a comment like you can on the PS3.

That seems really stupid.

7.0 for Army Corps of Hell isn't so bad!

http://vita.ign.com/articles/121/1218638p1.html
Yeah, but then in the review you get stuff like this:

As promising as the concept is, Army Corps of Hell falls woefully short in the gameplay department. Too often will you find yourself taking on the same groups of enemies and progressing through levels lacking in any real sense of variety. Army Corps of Hell is an infuriatingly missed opportunity, a great theme that is undercut by average gameplay.

Anything that falls "woefully short" in gameplay is not "good" in my book.

If I have Phantasy Star Portable 2 in my download list, can I download it on my PS3 and transfer it to the Vita?
This is, so far, one of THE big exceptions. Just about anything else I could want to play that's on PSN is on the list of Japanese Vita-supported games BUT the PSP ones, there really may be emulator issues with them.

One more sleep for me. Some will have it at the midnight launch in the states.

Mine, unfortunately, is not having a midnight release.

That's alright, I usually fall asleep before midnight unless I'm in the middle of working.

Will most likely take tomorrow off to properly enjoy the Vita. :)

I know I wouldn't.
If it still had exclusives likes Ys IV, I would probably still buy it. I would buy less games for it though.

There is a list of exceptions in the OP.

This is one of the exceptions. It didn't work a few days ago. If you get it to run, please inform me so I can update the list.

It's early days. PS3 had a dog shit OS to begin with too. With enough feedback and time I'm expecting to see nice firmware updates.
I just don't understand why they need to relearn lessons that they've already learned with the PS3.

You're right though, I do expect the OS to get better over time. It's just frustrating to see them making mistakes like this after all the experiences they've had over the past few years.

does the US vita have cool PS Network profile panels like the Japan vita? :)

the available panels on the Japan Vita are really cool, consists of all first party Japanese titles.

I find that a lot of reviewers tend to be really hyperbolic. And it's often because they want to look professional by using words like "woefully". If you read that paragraph, the reviewer also says it's average. That's probably what they meant. But "woefully short" is such a pretty phrase!

I find golf boring
I find tennis boring
I dislike golf games a la Tiger Woods
I like tennis games a la Virtua Tennis or Top Spin
I LOVE Hot Shot Golf series, and spent 40+ hours on the psp iteration (skipped ps3 one)
The same happened with Hot Shot Tennis

It's like arcade but deep, it's like goofy but adorable, they fit perfectly the handheld/mobile paradigms.
Those are very good GAMES.

Are you me?

Seriously... my ps1 years involved lots of HSG...

My DC years involved lots of Virtua Tennis...

So much awesome.

Yes.
There's some basic art and animal ones.
There's also some Sony first party ones.
And then there's some weirder ones like Wild Arms and Rogue Galaxy.

I'm currently using a Gravity Daze panel.

Blue is Sony's gaming colour now apparently - the PS blog (at least the EU one, not sure on US) has a blue theme, the PS store is blue, the "PS" logo on their adverts is on a blue background, the Vita box is blue, the "PS" button on the Vita is blue...

If the Vita came with only one Analog Stick, how many of you would still be buying?

I know I wouldn't.

I wouldn't mind. I was one of those fellows who asked why people needed a second analog stick for the psp. Not to mention I bought a 3ds and i'm satisfied with that one circlepad setup (though I will be buying the circle pad pro eventually).
