The Player 1 Podcast Topic

The only thing that is iffy about this process is that it blurs the line between investor/client.

For those that payed $15, they should be fine as they payed for what they are getting. Those who gave more, that's basically a donation. There's no return on that, unless i'm missing something here. There are perks that come with giving more than 15, but the value of those is very personal.

Blurs the line in the minds of a few simpletons, I guess. But so what, the worse that could happen is Double Fine gets a few dumb emails in their general company inbox.

Double Fine's Kickstarter clearly laid out the consideration received for paying more money.

Comedy Button banter (which includes me being an asshole on the internet--but that's de rigueur):

I've never head of this podcast, but according to the site, these are the hosts:

Starring Scott Bromley, Brian Altano, Anthony Gallegos, Ryan Scott, and Max Scoville.

Yeah... sounds like a real hoot. *barfs*

Hating on the Comedy Button? Sexy doesn't come cheap!

Whenever the Comedy Button donations come up, Mike turns into a huge asshole. And not a funny asshole who hates charity and Tim Schafer, but like a real petty asshole who's embarrassing to listen to.

Here's a post from an older thread:

This is absurd:

If we can't get $350 microphones, we can't do a podcast. Fuck off. You're a thief.

That's a pretty gross misinterpretation of that tweet and the whole situation. It's reading the situation in perhaps the single most negative way possible for no apparent reason. What's the deal? Is this a political thing? Is Mike way into rugged individualism? The whole thing is just bizarre.

To podcast you do not need ONE $350 mic, let alone 6 of them. When P1 started out I think both Stewy and I were using PS2 SOCOM headsets. And recording/editing via free software.

I'm not at all familiar with the Comedy Button situation - I'd assumed we were still talking about Rebel FM (and not Giant Bomb). But the idea that you can only do a podcast if you have the most professional equipment available is ridiculous and completely incorrect. If this request was done before they recorded an episode then it's even more ridiculous to me.

I'm all for pitching in and supporting content from people you like but that tweet does seem like begging. :|

On one episode of The Comedy Button they talked a bit about working with kickstarter and I think a lot more planning goes into starting one then people give it credit for. Kickstarter's ass is on the line too so they make sure you have/request enough money for taxes, kickstarter's cut, shipping for prizes in addition to having a good time table and plan in place for when you get everything out.

It's not all expensive mics. The whole Rebel FM deal probably would have went down better if it was a kickstarter project verses just taking donations.

Of course none of that matters now because Nick Suttner is back podcasting again after leaving Rebel FM so long ago. Its like I feel whole again :)

What? Where?

Oh wow, it's some of the same people involved! Fool me once situation. People that gave to those guys a second time, that is their fault.

After the opening to this episode all those Whitney Houston tweets I read and photoshops in the funny pictures thread make a lot more sense.

Did Chris Brown die too because people seemed to be talking about him an awful lot now. I really should look this stuff up

What podcast was Phil joking about regarding a $50k kickstarter program?

most likely Giant Bomb.

RebelFM I assume

Comedy Button.

(well, at least that's the one I was thinking of--and thought he was referring to)
That's the joke...you don't know which podcast I'm talking about because several have done it.

And for the record, my mic only costs about $60. My mik, however, is priceless.

Aren't people talking about Chris Brown because the music industry continues to pretend that he's not a woman-beating piece of shit?

A link was posted on the Grammy Thread showing tweets from "women" that were begging to be hit by the guy. Not sure if could be taken seriously, but it speaks how crazy stardom can be and how it can belittle something as alarming as partner abuse.

With the Comedy Button (and Rebel FM to an extent) I can get that they want to get the same grade of equipment they used before, to put out a show of the same quality as people would be used to. Coming from a professional setup like 1UP, IGN etc.

RebelFM lost some respect from me when they kept some of that cash and then bought a host a new PC so he could "talk about more games". Arguably shittier still because that guy wasn't even a part of the podcast when most of the money was donated.

So yeah I can understand using kickstarter or donations in certain situations.

Even with higher grade equipment, RebelFM never sounded any better than anything else out there.

Using the 1UP layoff funds to buy a computer for a guy really bothered me. You can't justify that as "for the podcast". If they use it for that, what else did they use all that money for? So I feel they just straight up lied about when they said the money was all just for the podcast and would not be used for personal reasons. It's thievery.

Using Kickstarter and being clear on what you're going to do with the money is fine by me though. Or even just asking for donations and being clear is enough.

On another note, I find P1 to be infinitely more funny than those Comedy Button guys.
But then again, I sometimes find P1 to be on the same comedic level as the Pod F. Tompkast, Comedy Bang Bang, and the Todd Glass Show.

What exactly is this Comedy Button thing? For some reason I still listen to Geekbox once a month or so (everyone on it really annoys me, Adam is a totally stereotypical nerd and is really awkward when he gets drunk, Ryan and Ryan are also just kind of normal nerds, they never have much insightful to say about anything) and I've heard them mention it a few times. I thought it was kind of weird because Ryan Scott never struck me as being very funny, and to me it never even seems like he's trying to be funny.

From what I remember of Anthony Gallegos on GFW he would try somewhat successfully to bite Shawn Elliott's humor, and for him too it seems odd that he'd be on a podcast dedicated to comedy.

I have the P1Podcast app and have to say I enjoy each new offering.

They actually have the same taste as I do in games, so that makes each episode fun to listen to.

Outside of a commentary they did for Home Alone 2 (which was actually hilarious), I haven't listened. But from what I understand it's basically a spin-off from the GameSpy Debriefings, involving comedy sketches of some sort. At least that's the impression I got, again aside from that one commentary episode I haven't checked it out.

What is CJ doing with the P1P app millions? I think we should be told.

He's building up the biggest catalog of birthing sounds known to man. He hopes to launch his spin-off podcast "Birth: A Chris Johnston Production" sometime this year.

lol rebel FM... the amount of money, good intentions, and support those guys squandered is legendary. it ended up being a podcast with all the irrelevant people from 1up whose opinions don't matter, but at the start I really thought it could end up being something special. the real tragedy is the 1up show disappeared without anything worthwhile to replace it... fuck the police/ziff davis

I personally still enjoy Rebel FM, it's not the show it started as which is a shame but I am entertained by it most weeks. It's one of the few podcasts I still listen to regularly.

As for the 1UP Show, we got CO-OP, which had a good run but despite them appealing many times it just never got the financial support it needed to keep going. A show like that is expensive to do, I'm happy those guys are at least still in business, even if it's making promo vids for devs..

I feel the only thing that really hurts Rebel FM is Arthur, he is the worst thing about it.

to be honest, I quit rebel fm after a couple of episodes. all of the people I cared about at ziff davis were fired or had already started voluntarily leaving to work on better things. unlike the 1up podcasts, the rebel fm podcast lost its following rather quickly. I remember on fridays when 1up's flagship podcast came out - the thread would be a few hundred posts long. ditto for the 1up show.

I'm disappointed the 1up show guys couldn't build a sizeable audience on youtube to help keep CO-OP running regularly. They continued putting together a solid product (although it wasn't the same since it was missing many of the great Ziff people) but were largely ignored. 10,000 hits for a show of that calibre is nothing.

The only person from 1up who ever mattered was Skip, and he is nowhere to be found (except twitter).

I think he should start a kickstarter.

Speaking of, his recent tweets indicate he could use all the love and good thoughts anyone can send his way right now.

:(

RIP Grammie Theobald

Condolences to the Theobalds.

ow and Condolences on the other story that is really bad news :( sorry to hear.
Thanks, folks. For serious.

This was the woman who, when I was 14, drove me to the bank so that I could close out my first bank account. She then took me to Toys R Us where I used the money to buy a Genesis and a copy of Ghouls'n Ghosts.

This was all done behind my parents' backs, and mom was none too pleased to find out that I had spent all of the money that I had gotten for my eighth grade graduation a few months prior. Grandma didn't care, though. She just wanted to see me happy.

I loved that woman.

For the past decade or so, I would call her every weekend and make her laugh. If you have grandparents who are still alive, I suggest you do the same.

Sometimes I feel like I should volunteer my services to edit the podcast. Maybe it's just cause I edit one every week but whenever I hear a background noise that's clearly coming from someone who isn't talking it annoys the crap out of me. Such an easy thing to fix, I shall let CJ off though since he did just have a kid, but just wanted to have a quick moan.
