Just listened to the OP podcast that had a translator from Mangastream and a VIZ translator (they're both friendly, no bad blood, the VIZ guy is just an OP translator/freelancer) and it's pretty interesting.
That said, they brought up the point that there were people promoting Mangastream on the Shonen Jump Alpha site saying something equivalent to "why pay for this and be behind when you can get the latest here for free". Never knew that, and wow.

It doesn't really change the big picture but I guess they panicked a bit after something like that. Nevertheless they went the wrong way about dealing with it.

The hilarious part about these seiyu-boyfriend scandals is that even pre-teen girls into boy bands like NSYNC and Justin Beiber don't freak out when the object has a significant other.
This is one of those things that don't actually translate well to US audiences, although maybe they can just call themselves Mashiro and Takagi now instead of that dumb pseudonym.

The VIZ guy was saying that there are people at VIZ that monitor all these scanlation sites. They do this for a few reasons, but one is to gauge interest of which series are popular. The specific talk about what happened is only about an hour of the podcast starting around ~59:00.
It's not a bad listen if you have nothing to do. However, both parties admit to not being directly involved with any of this and are just kind of on the side of what's really going on. You do get a good idea of why SJA is two weeks behind (in theory), dealings with jmanga, and whatnot as well.

Japan needs to get on board with what it takes to make money. The fact is, all the stuff they're whining about is ancilllary to the profits they're missing out on.
I don't understand what the big deal is. Japanese idols have to remain virgins until marriage?
If viz could have translated chapters out before the scanlators get their raws, I would think readers would flock to them, since speed seems to be a big factor especially with these shonen manga. It really is a wasted opportunity for Jump not to be doing that with Viz.

The earliest they could get them out is a few days after MangaStream did. The chapters we read on a Wednesday aren't out in Japan until the following Monday

Manuscripts are available weeks before they're published... but yeah, that time difference is the real killer here, although to my mind, it would be vastly preferable to have an english version out early and be making money, as opposed to having an english version out early and not be making money.
Just look at the whole "scandal" with Aya Hirano.

Anime industry worries about reverse-importing, it's the same thing here. No publisher wants the shit in their rags show up online a week before they hit the bookshelves.
Alpha doesn't interest me at all, but I can understand the reasoning behind it.

I doubt there's much of a reverse-scanlation scene, although I could be wrong. Of course, this will never happen, but I would like to see improvement on the availability/ease of access to official material.
Not reverse-scanlation, since Japanese readers could just read the 'raws.' It's been a while but the interview between Ken "I love red haired tsundere characters who are full of shit and aren't worth the paper they're drawn on so I'll end a series out of nowhere in order to gratify my almost incestuous feelings for my own character" Akamatsu and Kentaro "Much Better Than Akamatsu" Takekuma had something about that, iirc.

This is sad news I love this series.
The series is complete at 10 volumes, but the scans just started volume 8 and they've been releasing chapters every day or so, so they'll catch up pretty quickly.
My saltiness regarding Ken "I'm a terrible human being" Akamatsu aside, Takekuma is the more knowledgeable man there in the interview.
I was more referring to the fact that technically speaking, there's nothing impossible about giving Viz manuscripts early. I know that raws come out days before the magazines go on sale.
I think you're misunderstanding me, it's not that I want super early manga, I just would like the actual creators/licensors to more effectively distribute stuff to foreign audiences.

He theoretically could do some kind of social commentary on how dumb this creepy Idol Worship is, but my guess is they won't and will just resolve the conflict within those confines.
US Pop music fans, even pre-teen girls, are nothing like that. Timberlake was with Britney Spears while he was still a pre-teen idol, and Bieber has had several girlfriends. It isn't really comparable at all.

Wait a minute... so we technically read the newest chapters from the big 3 before the average Joe picks up the latest issue of WSJ? I always thought it comes in japan someone picks up a magazine and scan and translate from there
I really don't see how the two compare. Asking about pop stars girlfriends/boyfriends seem like a normal thing here.
Yes, scanlated chapters are available several days before the actual magazines go on sale.
Of course, that doesn't apply to most series that aren't the most popular shounens, those are done by magazine/volume scans.

For some series the latter happens but with the the Big 3 and others those are basically "hot of the press"

Its possible if someone else picks it up, but with Viz looming around with C+Ds only a few might attempt it.
I always assumed the leak happened during the printing process.
