Just to be clear 'touching the player' is not required in a red card decision. A wrecklass or dangerous challenge is enough. Not to say that this challenge warranted a red, but the idea that there has to be contact is a misconception.

Maybe he was standing in a bad angle or just judged it differently than we do from this replay. They don't have the luxury of seeing it in slow motion replays from 10 different angles, of course they aren't going to be consistent, there's a great deal of judgment involved and the refs in the premier league are not one big organism.

I'm not saying English refs can't be bad at times or even horrible, but it's hard to criticize him too much for not sending off a player, who didn't even hit the opponent.
