But the captain really wants her on the team because of her talent.

Quite possibly,
sure, that wouldn't explain why she suddenly is slaughtering dozens of mecha when she's only done one on one combat before, but that's getting really nitpicky at this point.

You can effectively do both (see- everything Oshii has ever done ever since the beginning of time incl. Angel's Egg- the minimal dialogue being packed with meaning), but if you're only going to do 1, best make sure it's not dry and hand-holding expositionary stuff.
Hence this is why I've grown sour on Kamiyama as of late, the dialogue in everything he has directed and wrote is overwhelming dry and expostionary for better or worse, it's pretty much at it's worst in EotE at least.:/ also I'll go a pull a 7th and say his shows are also stylistically boring.:P

I just look at it the same way I look at that stuff in Space Pirates. Nobody knows why she's miraculously good against terrorists even though she's just a school girl and only leanred about how to electronic warfare only like 2 days before a school trip in space. The main point is to just enjoy it.

So the Patlabor movie special editions are being offered in a rather cheap bundle. Can our resident Oshii experts weigh in as to whether I should jump on these particular releases?

I haven't seen a couple of these like Angels Egg for example, but here's some stuff that I like or I have seen discussed frequently as being worth your time.

[snip]

This is an excellent list. I'll just add

Chie the Brat
Kimagure Orange Road (especially the movie I Want to Return to That Day)
Legend of the Galactic Heroes (most of the OVA series is from the 90s but it does start in the 80s)

You know, I can provide another wall of text as to why Space Pirates makes sense. :)

icarus: I actually like the first movie, but the second movie goes way too far in self-indulgent navel gazing for me. However, I refuse to fault the TV show for not being Oshii and doing its own thing in its own way. You may not like that, but I did.

Literary quotes and references, like The Catcher in the Rye thing, being an example - in Innocence, where this is most prevalent, all of the quotes have relevance and impart insight in the particular scene & the movie at large, sound like something the characters would plausibly think about (this aspect is admittedly a tad overdone/shaky), and are explained within the context of the scene without requiring of the audience prior knowledge of the work being referenced. Although this kind of thing is done incompetently by many more creators than Kamiyama, to be fair. Oh look, we have a cover to a book in our movie! Guess you better go read it to find out what it means! DEEP! Namedrop Sartre for bonus points! But this is the kind of thing folk will lazily accuse Oshii of when it's demonstrably untrue.

You're just hating on the fact that Guilty Crown is the deepest show of the season.

It has Nietzsche AND Kafka.

How much deeper can you get?

I haven't seen a couple of these like Angels Egg for example, but here's some stuff that I like or I have seen discussed frequently as being worth your time.

Akira
Angel's Egg
Anne of Green Gables
Ashita no Joe
Dirty Pair
Gauche the Cellist
Golgo 13: The Professional
Grave of the Fireflies
Gundam is generally good, specifically the original series, Chars Counterattack, and War in the Pocket.
Kiki's Delivery Service
Macross
Nausicaa
Patalabor
Robotech
Rose of Versailles
Space Cobra
Urusei Yatsura: Beautiful Dreamer

Don't forget Chie the Brat, man.

I'd get them for the storybooks and nice boxes and resealable wrap (I think?)

However, I'm pretty sure that the Hong Kong Blu-rays of the Patlabor movies are ports of the JP BDs, so an affordable Blu-ray option is available. I'll be able to confirm this soonish. Although I have watched the HK BD of the first movie myself and can give it a seal of approval -- it looks good.

I'll probably end up buying that bundle myself, regardless. I want storyboards.

Yeah, but Oshii does that as well. A number of his works have exposition dump speeches in the middle of the movie, sometimes in a way that badly affects the pacing. I'm not going to give him a free pass for that just because he does a good job of it at other points.

Kill Me Baby 3

This episode had quite a few funny gags, and Unused Character was great, especially since
she's voiced by goddess Rie.

While I'm not going to put a knock against such a solid list, some of that stuff isn't technically from the 80's. Not that has anything to do with why you should watch something.

Ergo Proxy has Derrida, Lacan, Husserl and Berkeley all in one room.

As statues.

Ergo Proxy is really the best example of this trend because they take everything so far. That show references more philosophers than an Introduction to Philosophy module.

Fucking lol I knew it. Touma' Hymen Imagine Breaker is just a limiter to more powerful ability that is being sealed by it. Also the Imagine Breaker was given to Touma by God.

I watched Otaku no Video. It was weird and slightly depressing. But it did get me to watch Daicon III/IV which is amazing. Bring it back, Gainax*! The heroes/villains would all have to be changed due to copyright issues these days but it would be fun to see it redrawn & more fleshed out, Diebuster style (not that Diebuster was a remake).

* Wherever you've gone :(

Hey, Joe is partially 80's! But yeah there's a couple like Anne that are like 78-79 or something. I got a bit lazy.

So... I just watched Dead Leaves.

Anyone care the explain what did I just witness? And more importantly, is there more? (Already seen FLCL)

a lot of daicon iv's greatness comes from the ownage ELO song

You just witnessed Imaishi masturbating all over the screen.

That's basically it.

Well, I suppose what is and what isn't 'stylistically boring' is an open question I don't really see it. Kamiyama's direction is certainly extremely 'classical narrative cinema' that's hardly a bad thing. The vast majority of all anime TV shows are tying to aim for that kind of direction and most of them fail, badly.

I don't think I'm going to penalize a director who executes traditional film style well - that would be bizarre.

Given the shit that has been going on in the series this isn't surprising at all tbh.

Now only DTL can fight the good fight in liking Guilty Crown, he lost a nakama this day.

Oh well.

This conversation went places.
What can I say? I've tried going through the soundtrack multiple times, but it just doesn't do much for me. Then I go listen to other Kenji Kawai work.

I mean, isn't what this conversation boils down to is that some stuff worked for you but didn't for me, and vice-versa? Sure we could go over the details more, but you and pizzaroll have already drawn such a deep line in the sand I'm not all that interested.
