I'm glad you decided to check this out. It had been on my back burner for a while. From the sound of it, it's worth the time investment. I love the idea of a blend of styles being put into one package; yes, there will be inconsistencies, but there will be something to gain from seeing these varying styles.
Because Animal Treasure Island has Miyzaki's name attached people might have a, er, inaccurate picture of what the movie is like. It's not some Ghibli quality film, but that doesn't mean it's not worth sitting down with when you have the time.

Holy shit, totally missed that 3rd sentence xD
Yep!

The way I saw it was less
fake lesbian and more indifference to the situation (Homonormativity if you will). Like you said, a byproduct of the time, but now it's what I wish more homosexual relationships could be like.

I would also have proffered her commit suicide in the show. It would make more sense than her accident.

Eh, I dunno... it was just weird how the
she just turns straight after all of that
. It puts a pall over the entire series - I think I would have been happier if they were just
close friends
and left it at that.

And yes, I felt like that was a compromise to retain some fidelity to the manga but to
make it more "upbeat" for television.

I always assumed she did commit suicide. I mean, it didn't even make sense as an accident!
Blame the anime!

Currently starting Moribito: Guardian of the spirit, and have absolutely no idea what I'm in for. Is this shit, or can I actually power through this?

This could legitimately be the worst thing I've ever seen in one of these threads.
I think the best part is that it is (presumably) an official image. You can't just write it off as an inevitability of the internet's infinite sea of fans.

She's dark, but with some art styles I'm never sure if it's necessary to call someone black or call out another ethnicity. So I decided to just call her, tan. That, and I didn't know her name. :S
I'm partial to "brown."

Welp, I'm sold on Kimi ni Todoke.

You've just made firehawk a very happy Canadian.

This show is just a disappointment for me now, not that I was expecting much from it to begin with. What are your thoughts on Moretsu Pirates. BTW this is my view from episode 1-6 haven't seen 7 yet, but your welcome to talk about it just don't spoil it.

Welp, her brother has one too...it's small and so probably a bindi

They're supposed to be, like, exotic and foreign and not-Japanese and all

Wikipedia has now just educated me on the difference between tilakas and bindis. Definitely a bindi since it's smaller.

It's suddenly occurring to me that (to my knowledge) no one ever makes any comment on Anthy and Akio's race in the show. I wondered if Anthy being brown was the reason she was being slapped around so much when I began the show, but this turned out not to be the case.

This was the first thing that came to my mind too.

[firehawk]No you see it's a deconstruction of shoujo archetypes[/firehawk]

Actually the main reason to watch it is the beautiful art and high production value.

I actually decided to watch Kimi ni Todoke when I kept seeing it pop up on the work list of big-name animators.

Also because I'm a sucker for mushy romance, even when there's not a conclusive resolution.

The only good thing that could have come from actual racism in the show would be
the shock of anyone who discovered that the academy is being run by a brown person.

Followed by Akio...erm...broadening their horizons on race. Five or six at a time.

It's a very pretty mush. I guess it helps that the characters aren't detestable, even when they act like morons.

I feel like I should explain this. It is perfectly normal for teen girls to take
naked?
baths with each other. Nothing homosexual about this at all.

It's a good thing you're here to explain these things to us ignorant and perverted boys, otherwise we might get the wrong impression.

No, more like third.

So who's second? :x

I stuck through all of Kimi ni Todoke for
Chizuru x Ryu
but I probably wouldn't have dropped it if not for this. It was slow-paced, but that's inherent in the genre.

Overall I'd say Maid Sama is better, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit.
