Nintendo 3DS reaches 5 million sales in Japan - Breaks the record

I'm guessing the second boost was when the Zelda/Mario bundles were released?

It is selling so they would probably consider it. It looks like Capcom likes to use it a lot for their games. Just saying. It make sense plus the battery life is still low correct? My thoughts are since Monster Hunter is huge in Japan they might think it would be a good idea to just have it already built into the next model.

I don't see how the 3DS selling well correlates to guaranteeing a redesign at all.

If the 3DS was doomed like so many were chanting before sales picked up it would guarantee a dead handheld. As in no remodel. It is selling so they will likely come up with a way to improve on the features like a second analog + longer battery life maybe even 3G/4G. Makes sense to me at least.

Actually, remodels happen to poor selling platforms too. It's an attempt to re-spark interest in the device with a new look. Both the PS3, and PSP utilized that strategy to revitalize their hardware sales. Though, for it to happen key software needs to hit. PSP came alongside Monster Hunter, and PS3 alongside Final Fantasy XIII.

I hated my DS Phat so the lite was welcomed... 3DS is not as bad as that but a second stick come on Nintendo what a bonehead move leaving that out. So of course I'll again shell out cash for a redesign

the DS was doing very well before the lite made it a monster

Japan's flip phones put almost everything else to shame. And yes social gaming in Japan is goddamn big.
Maybe back in the pre-iPhone and pre-android days. I don't really see what their flip phones can offer that a smart phone can't.

As far as dumb phones however, their flip phones are phenomenal.

They're startin to ditch their flips for iPhones I'm starting to see on the trains here. But I don't think smart phone gaming is really targeting that audience like the 3DS games do.

Good point I forgot about what the PSP and PS3 went through during its bad times. I guess I didn't consider it that way for Nintendo just figure they might drop it like the Virtual Boy.

This was my thinking. The 3DS is doing good now but maybe a remodel with extra feature would send sales through the roof. I feel a lighter, better battery life, more colors to choose from and maybe extra analog stick handheld would make me pretty excited to pick one up real quick.

the fact the 3DS had a huge price cut that's actively hurting Nintendo has put them in the following position :

- gain market share and bring in revenue on games/dlc/royalties etc to offset the loss per unit, whilst looking to reduce component costs. (AKA the Sony business model - i'm sure they are not thrilled about this)

However, the alternative is ....

- a new unit to stealthfully replace the old unit. Offer dual controls and a better battery life plus new colours. Add a price premium to either reduce the losses from the first model or - if they've got REAL balls - to go back to pulling a profit. Slowly phase out the old unit. They can even take the "well, people have a choice of units! we are just giving people what they want - not our fault they like the new model more!" stance.

People actively want an upgraded model and if it still retains a reasonable price point of, say, 19800 yen then the 4800 yen increase won't look that bad especially if they then sweaten the deal with some sort pack in goody (2000 yen download card to get people onto the DLC train and into the habit of downloading)

I can see it happening and i can see it being a success. I don't particularly see anything wrong with it - infact, if this does all work out, it's genius on so many levels i really don't know where to start -especially- when you look at how the price cut also managed to then muddy the Vita's value proposition (whether planned or not).

Gaming press will continue treating it like an abject failure.

that's yahtzee, and he's crazy. i think indifference is more likely.

For comparison, the PS3 is only at approximately 7,830,550 units sold.

Remind me to link back to this thread the next time someone makes a "Where have all the Japanese console games gone?" thread.

...goddamn.
yeah, the JRPG exodus has a pretty clear response in that post too.

All of you are flip floppers. I'm sticking with "still doomed".

stand by your guns! those cowardly journalists on their "nintendo wont put mario on ios, sell your stocks" won't have the stones, theyll likely be uh...covering the next ipad release i guess.

says you, pal! i just picked up SMT strange journey, mario & luigi: bowser's inside story, TWEWY and ordered radiant historia, which....oh

for real though, they take time to make. your vita's getting em too. you know what's not though? consoles, man.

I was just wondering, but can the original DS still become the best selling console of all time? Last I checked it was only like 3 million sold away.

I'm looking at the GOOD PEOPLE DIE thread and many people are saying the opt for the Vita version of the game because of better screen and audio - I wonder how much of those complaints Nintendo can address and squeeze into a redesign - if they are going to charge more for the new version anyway

I believe this redesign is coming it may not make it for this holiday but next spring I'll be looking for it. But the other factor that pushed a DS Lite was a much better PSP so the Vita needs to challenge the 3DS a bit more for Nintendo to make this move

The 3DS is the PS2 of portables, but does show signs of the PS1 (although that can be fixed with a revision). Thankfully it has the DS legacy to keep it from becoming the PS3.

And when it comes to sales, it's looking great.

Shorty was a cop.

OT, the 3DS really did explode after the 10,000Y Price drop and MH3G, MK7, SM3D. One can only imagine what MH4 and Pokemon will do.....I do still think that it's not doing as great in the west, but in Japan, it's doing spectacular numbers.

It should be, I'm waiting on DQ7 and FF5-6. I wouldn't mind a Secret of Mana remake either if its kept 2D.

I love how people wait for games that have not even been hinted at getting ported, let alone remade.

DQVIIr has been rumoured for a while now, and there is nothing surprising about waiting on the inevitable remake of FF V/VI. It will happen.

I finally decided to buy a 3DS when it went for 150 dollars at newegg. I think it's a good deal.

I was one of them crazies waiting for a revision, but that $150 price tag changed my mind. I think I bought a DS Lite for more than that. I also just want to play Mario Kart badly after playing the demo at the store. Made me remember all those hours wasted playing MKDS.

Plus there's that Layton vs. Wright game coming out, and Ace Attorney 5 was just announced, which I hope is going to be for the 3DS. I'm really looking forward to those games.

i get the point of waiting on an announcement, but this is a pretty safe bet. im not replaying either cause i feel it's that inevitable after IV and all.

how many 3DS sold on Love Plus week? if they reached 5 million?

where is that damn media create thread when you need it

Last week total

3DS - 4.931.955
So, since 3DS reached the 5.000.000 mark, this means this week it sold at least 68.045 units.
But since it's exceeding the 5 million line in the graph, probably it did at least 70k. Let's see if I can do a sort of pixel counting.

this is all before a Pokemon lulz

and DQX O_o

3 games people. Nintendo still has so many franchises they have yet to unleash.

Other than Pokemon they have no guaranteed beast mode titles left. More Mario isn't going to do much since there's already been 2 important Mario titles so early on. There is the casual fair like Brain Age, and Friend Collection but the viability of those titles in the current landscape is questionable, which is likely why a lot of the software on 3DS is targeting the PSP userbase - a userbase who won't be quenched by mobile like the casual gamers may be. Whatever big guns the 3DS will have likely are not known quantities.

Just like NSMB Wii didn't do anything for Wii after Galaxy and MK Wii ? You can't be serious - there isn't just one type of Mario game that caters to all target groups. Especially when we have not seen the new 2D Mario. Sayin a 2D Mario won't have impact is really naive.

And Animal Crossing 3DS will fail now because of smartphones ?

The fact that 3D Land will become the best selling 3D Mario title should tell you it's catering to more than just the audience who normally buys 3D Mario games. New Super Mario Bros. 3D will sell a tonne, but its affect on hardware won't be a immediate huge jump. Nor will things like Luigi's Mansion or Mario's Sport 18.

Animal Crossing is a franchise that boggles my mind in terms of why it's so successful, as such I don't comment on it.

It's the first non-port handheld 3D Mario. It's hard to extrapolate anything from that, especially whether or not it's the exact same hardware-buying audience that 2D Mario appeals to.

Bookmarked for future references, next 3DS 2D Mario won't have big impact on hardware sales.

....wow.

There's Animal Crossing, there's 2D Mario, there's MH4, there's proper third party support, there's the fact that 3DS is selling 70k+ since the start of the year with no slow down in sight. Just having proper third party support is equivalent to having a "Brain Age". Its not like the PSP sold 18M on the promise on first party support right? With Vita bombing so hard, the 3DS is taking that market. If third parties drop proper support for it or the 3DS doesn't get its own "Brain Age" game, then yes it'll fall short, but otherwise I don't see the momentum fading away. Nintendo is on the ball.

Oh DQXI is for sure on 3DS, another winner.
