Nintendo 3DS reaches 5 million sales in Japan - Breaks the record

It's the first non-port handheld 3D Mario. It's hard to extrapolate anything from that, especially whether or not it's the exact same hardware-buying audience that 2D Mario appeals to.

3D Land was marketed in such a way to specifically try to attract the 2D audience.

I wonder how long it can mantain momentum - that record curve of sales imho comes from people who were unhappy with launch price and didn't find enough games to justify buying new console.

Animal Crossing has fallen off its buzz I don't really have a guess to how its going to do

I think Nintendo should start telling us how 3DS and WiiU connectivity will work pretty soon

The fact is just this: while 3D Land is doing great, the last 2D Mario games sold over 4 millions on Wii and over SIX MILLIONS on DS. So, even if Super Mario 3D Land has attracted some of the 2D audience, it's only a minor part of it.

How can you say that when even the lackluster Wii version sold more than a million. AC 3DS will be big, especially with its implemented StreetPass/Spotpass Support.

Yeah, I can't believe someone would even make that claim. 2D Mario >>>> 3D Mario in terms of sales and impact. Comparing SMG 1/2 sales to NSMBW shows this

I know how much more popular 2D Mario titles are compared to the 3D ones. I also know that 3D Land isn't behaving like a 3D Mario title does.

There's Animal Crossing, there's 2D Mario, there's MH4, there's proper third party support, there's the fact that 3DS is selling 70k+ since the start of the year with no slow down in sight. Just having proper third party support is equivalent to having a "Brain Age". Its not like the PSP sold 18M on the promise on first party support right? With Vita bombing so hard, the 3DS is taking that market. If third parties drop proper support for it or the 3DS doesn't get its own "Brain Age" game, then yes it'll fall short, but otherwise I don't see the momentum fading away. Nintendo is on the ball.

I already talked about Animal Crossing, and Mario. While MH probably receive some Nintendo money along the way it isn't their series (because it would be handled a lot better if it was) so that's not really relevant to what I said.

Oh DQXI is for sure on 3DS, another winner.

I'm guessing the words "known quantity" don't mean anything to you? It's best not to talk about unannounced games, especially ones in franchises where the latest entry is leaving people scratching their heads. Though that might be a good thing.

So was Galaxy 2. People still bought tons of Wii's for NSMB Wii specifically before, during, and after it.

Galaxy 2 had the unfortunate life of being the direct sequel to a very well known 3D platformer. Land on the other hand is a 2D series moniker, though a moniker not used in about a decade.

3D Land has not stopped selling, has it? I wouldn't be surprised if it eventually topples a few million. I suspect it'll fall well above what a 3D Mario does, but just short of the 2D Marios.

Like I said, 2D Mario on 3DS will sell tonnes of copies, but I'm not convinced it'll sell tonnes of 3DSes alongside it. I think 3D Land, and Mario Kart 7 has made it apparent that if you want big Mario experiences you buy a 3DS.

The only way I would be convinced is if it launched alongside a redesign. Then shit will hit the fan, lol.

I suppose I got side tracked a bit, but I see all those things I talk about as known quantities - if the trend follows - it'll come into fruition, and I don't see anything stopping it, especially from its main competitor the Vita.

MH4 or if DQXI does come to the 3DS (from the games announced, its pretty obvious pavement towards it), does it really matter if its first or third party? Its still a known quantity.

DS got an LTD of around 33 million in 7 or so years in Japan.
That's simply incredible knowing the size of the market.
That should be seen more as an exception than the norm.
Certainly isn't the norm, I fully understand that. Even as I say how successful 3DS will be, obviously the monster that was the DS still scares me, but Nintendo is playing the game well and I don't see them letting momentum fade away like it did with the DS and Wii.

Okay, if you insist.

I am sure someone will bring this up (maybe you) when the 2D Mario platformer releases and hardware spikes or doesn't.

As I was hinting at, DQXI isn't exactly a known quantity. It could be many things, just like DQX was something unexpected.

I'll hold my hands up and say I thought the 3DS was never going to be a success (compared to the DS).

Very impressive turn-around.

Sony, if you want to vitalise hardware sales you need look no further.

I want to see how people respond to MMO DQX before talking about DQXI and how it'll do.

The way I see it, if the Wii version bombs, Nintendo's going to spend a massive amount of money to try and push the Wii U version.

If that bombs, then I dunno. DQXI's future on a Nintendo system is not necessarily certain, but a more traditional 3DS game seems likely in that instance.

Other than Pokemon they have no guaranteed beast mode titles left. More Mario isn't going to do much since there's already been 2 important Mario titles so early on. There is the casual fair like Brain Age, and Friend Collection but the viability of those titles in the current landscape is questionable, which is likely why a lot of the software on 3DS is targeting the PSP userbase - a userbase who won't be quenched by mobile like the casual gamers may be. Whatever big guns the 3DS will have likely are not known quantities.

Animal Crossing?
And a 2D Mario platformer...

already announced for this year (no Pokemon).
If in the three games already released we count also MH, let's say that it's possible (almost sure) that at least 1 third party will realease another big title on a 3ds on fire like it is up to now.
Unknown and unpredictable new casual hit (like brain training or tomodatchi) are...unpredictable and unknow.

:)

I'm going to be DCCharlie in a year or two, aren't I? At least I didn't talk numbers I suppose...

Sony, if you want to vitalise hardware sales you need look no further.

I don't think Sony Corp as a whole has enough money to teach the entirety of Japan's game development sector modern techniques and time management (since Sony isn't exactly great at that either) that they'd need to invest in serious projects on Vita.

Well, I guess if they want to make projects that look better than something that could be achieved on PS2.

So, Junnichi Masuda director/producer/whatever at Game Freak said in a recent Q&A with fans to watch Pokemon Smash, a weekly Pokemon show in Japan when asked about details of Black and White's 3rd version game.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvNmfb4K03w

His response (about 4:30 in the video): "Well, there's no reason to expect me to know that [about a third version] [crowd laughs] but I can't answer. But...but... I wonder if it's alright to say this....watch Pokemon Smash...if you want details"

Yesterday, he posted on twitter:

来週のポケモンスマッシュ、絶対に生で見て!!!!見られない人はマスダのツイートに注目してて!!!

"Don't forget to watch next week's Pokemon Smash!!!! For people who can't watch it, check out my tweets!!!"

Megaton incoming? :P

Are you implying that DQ will suddenly lose its sales power just because one game might not be as mainstream? Really?

I'm implying Square Enix might dare to be stupid with another change for DQXI.

If DQ X bombs, you can be sure they won't try anything crazy for the next one. The franchise is way too important to them.

Also, speaking of DQ, when is Terry's Wonderland 3D coming out? It'll be quite big too.

Wouldn't that just mean a safe traditional DQXI then? More of the same ain't a change.

You also haven't really addressed your 2D Mario thing. Its really obvious that 2D Mario for the 3DS will sell a shit ton of systems, I'm disappointed you of all people don't understand this simple little fact.

This is completely off the current conversation, but sometimes I wonder if Square Enix should get Oda to do Dragon Quest art, or at the very least design a game around his designs. It's so weird seeing how active Toriyama was both in the manga world, and the gaming world to see the one who is the heir to his throne do less.

So what is Pokemon Smash? If that's an accurate translation then it seems like we'll be seeing Grey soon.

Right now One Piece is probably taking all the work time Oda can spare anyway.

Between the manga, the movies, and a baby, I doubt he has time.

And Toriyama is one of the three people that makes Dragon Quest. You can't get rid of him until he dies.

Wow. This is one week short of the one year mark, right?

And isn't sometime in March a big holiday in Japan, too?

Probably, you mean end of April / beginning of May, with the Golden Week.
However, you could consider March a "Holiday" since KH3D will be released on 29th, with the bundles. XD

Ahh, yeah, that's what I was thinking. Thanks!

Realistically when do you think we will see a revision? Holiday season 2012?

I'm guessing early August, with the first 15 minutes of their E3 conference being dedicated to it's announcement before going into Wii U frenzy. Being on the market for about a year and a half before a revision sounds right to me.

edit- for reference, there were just under 19 months separating the DS from the DSL in NA, and 15 months separating them in Japan.

I was hinting more at a significant price drop, but I take your point.

Price drop isn't going to do shit without games. A well timed price drop alongside key software can revitalize Vita.

A huge price drop next week will just keep Vita alive for the month.

Right now One Piece is probably taking all the work time Oda can spare anyway.

I was under the impression he actually planned his manga. Toriyama wrote his stuff on the fly and was able to do a stack of video games.

INB4 those guys who think they're so funny and reply with "Well duh, that's because Toriyama just draws the same 4 people and switches their hair".

Well, I was lurking GAF in 2011 and I remember all those 3DS threads. There were a bunch of users who stuffed the threads with their crazy posts - and it seems like they completely vanished now.

One even said that Nintendo has to abandon the 3DS.

Yeah. Times change.

Eh, I see a revision only being announced near the end of the year/early next year. They'll probably just let the 3DS cruise along with its sales for this year and place focus on the Wii U.

If true, and if 3DS-exclusive, megaton indeed.

Oh yeah, Burntpork probably XD

I'm amazed at the figures this thing is pulling nowadays. Can't say as I've found it a terribly rewarding device to own but that's just me.

A Pokemon being a 3DS exclusive is a megaton to who? The people buying Pokemon Pocket Edition on iOS? lol

It's a Shocking News tag story.

It'd be a megaton to the people who assumed it would be a DS game, which seems to be a fair amount of people, from what I've seen.
