Yosuga no Sora - 01-12 (END)

yosuga-no-sora-01-01.jpg

What is love? What does it mean to receive love? What does it mean to love someone else? Methodical and hauntingly intriguing, Yosuga no Sora explores the lengths man will go through to find love and what loving another entails.[...]

So, did you enjoy watching it? I honestly can't tell.

Exactly! But the show goes out of it's way to make it an accident bu making the flowers blow out of her hand and Rei jumping for them.... Then the whole police investigation stuff to disprove the suicide theory.
Well at least it's better than the manga ending where
Kaoru no Kimi dies
.

Well, I think you're quite on the money with that comment. However, in all fairness, Penguin Drum is a much more recent show so I can see why they'd still be at a 'formative' stage in their analysis of the work. It just doesn't help that it comes immediately after their superb Utena discussion.
Having someone who actually knows about gender theory and has written academically for the matter is indeed a high act to follow. I'm still enjoying the Penguindrum discussion, nonetheless. I hadn't even thought of how pretty much every pairing in the show is identical regarding the passive/aggressive dichotomy.

Why do you ask questions you already know the answer to?

I'm not really asking a question to them, I suppose.

I'm just interested to find out if other people in this thread would agree with my assessment regarding the shows' uncertainty with it's own identity. Not to mention how being pulled between these different genres hurts the work as a whole because it can't decide what it is and we, as the audience, don't know how to react to what we're seeing.

Am I supposed to laugh? Am I supposed to find this endearing? Should I celebrate the 'cute' maid outfits? Should I believe in these characters and feel bad about their life experiences while simultaneously objectifying them?

School Days 01

Vaguely knowing the ending I started this.

It is kind of unsettling. Mostly the art though.

We have 2 confessions in this first episode. One verbal from Konoha (which I learned means word) and one non verbal, a kiss from Sekai just before she jumps into the train.
Well her preference for drama is obvious, as otherwise she wouldn't have helped to create this love triangle with Makoto as the center piece.

He doesn't seem to be overly shy, so one might wonder why it needs Sekai to get him to talk to her?
Probably because he does not want to, he also deletes the picture he took after just one day.
However he is quick at grabbing opportunities and reckless to the point of suffocating himself with badly cooked food.

The episode begins and ends with the same scene Makoto searching his name on the class board and him who is soon to be climbing the staircase of adulthood (as is said) spying at Konoha.
At the end we get to see some of the faces behind him, the main cast I guess.

Makoto with so many
ugly drawn
flowers surrounding you, you might just turn into a bee.

You are probably the only one who has any uncertainty about who this show is trying to appeal to. You are over-thinking it Lagrange's ambitions here.

lol slideshow at the beginning.

The last time that eating a burger gave me visions of the Earth's destruction, I ended up in the hospital with food poisoning. The last time that this lead me to be able to see inside my own intestines.....let's not talk about that.

What the fuck kind of witch doctory is
making someone eat a preserved umbilical cord to reintroduce good bacteria and antibodies into the body?
Seriously? Kawamori presents us with a grave environmental crisis threatening the planet, but his solution is MAGIC AND CRAZY HINDU WORDS. I'll stick to Meriken Burgers being the future of me, thanks.

School Days 05:

Makoto following his heart
and/or dick
. I can't say I blame him,
Kotonoha is way too timid in that department
. Shit is going to hit the fan so gloriously.

Blood-C 05:

Yo, Aged Ones:
Saya can't very well honor the fucking contract if none of you will tell her what it is
.

I'll be disappointed if
Guimauve guy isn't the final boss

Sentai Filmworks Licenses K-ON!! Anime Season 2
The North American anime licensing company Sentai Filmworks announced on Monday that it licensed the second season of the K-ON!! television anime series. The 26-episode anime season and the accompanying OVA will be available on DVD & BD later this year.

You are probably the only one who has any uncertainty about who this show is trying to appeal to. You are over-thinking it Lagrange's ambitions here.

If they were clear on their intent from the start then I'm sure the show would be less, well, irregular tonally. They way they've handled mood shifts, tone, fanservice and characterisation across the first part of this series has been nothing if not inconsistent. Perhaps this was there plan all along but if so I feel the show would have benefited from committing to one these approaches rather than attempting to do all of them.

Stellvia of the Universe 4

Yep, this is definitely a character based show, the sci-fi plot and the moe are taking a back seat to relationship/friendship building and standard "coming of age" themes.

More
really bad piloting from Shima
this episode and the inevitable
low-grades/punishment/dejection
that follows. This time round though,
potential love interest co-pilot is on hand both to cheer her up and give effective advice on how to not crash into your superior officer during flight training
. Cute.

That said, it's clearly building for something big as we learned in this episode that
there's actually a second "shockwave" of radiation heading in Earth's direction (from Beta Hydri going supernova), the effects of which originally brought humanity to the brink and turned space green. Apparently Stellvia and other acadamies were formed to help avoid this, somehow.

Atama Yama

What a fun, weird, trippy, amazingly animated short. I had been eager to check out Koji Yamamura’s Inaka Isha (Adaptation of Kafka's A Country Doctor) and figured I would watch this first. The texture of the film is what really grabbed me, the grit and filth of the world being portrayed are palpable. The ending in particular is technically amazing but also mesmerizing and hilarious.

Koji Yamamura is amazing, I wish people made more anime like him.

So Anime-GAF, I'm not sure if anyone here's interested in Lupin III stuff but I'll go ahead and post this anyway (since it's most definitely my favourite animated series ever.)

It's the 40th year anniversary this year and on the 26th of this month there will be a big Lupin festival / event (link) to celebrate the occasion. The event will be broadcast live on the Nico-Nico TV site for free and if you can get there in person, entrance to the event is also free. There's currently quite a lot of speculation and hype among fans about a new TV series (whether it be animated or live action.) While I don't want to get my hopes up, there's a strong possibility something of it may be shown at this event.

Would any GAF members be interested in seeing a new series? If so, any preference to animation style?

How the show juxtaposes the serious moments with the fanservicey ones is indeed jarring, but I don't know how you would have expected anything else from that first episode. Are we forgetting the show started with Madoka getting undressed into a traditional otaku-bait swimsuit? Pandering works like this often interpolate the gratuitous elements with more "dramatic" moments as a way to justify their, well, pandering.

Muginami is probably the best example of this. Her slutty character design and her lachrymose past have been done so many times before I find it difficult to be surprised by it. One would argue that the darker elements to her character are there to further provoke titillation in the viewers who sympathise or "admire" her. It's manipulation of the audience's perception at its shameless, and easily expected in a medium where tragedy porn is highly lauded.

For sure, I enjoy Lupin. As for animation style, as much as I didn't really enjoy the film, the studio behind Lupin III vs Conan (have no clue) did a nice job with the art of the cast.
You mean, like this? It would look very cool; it's a shame this animation was "wasted" on a Pachinko slot machine...

Edit: This slot machine ish works too!

I wonder if Sentai will bother dubbing it with the same cast as S1.
That is most likely the case.

I had fun calling her Muginanami several times during the flashback, alghouh it didn't make sense.

Maybe I can help complicating things with post modern reasoning.
As we find storys more accurate at depicting and observing real life which content both comedic and tragic aspects.
So a show that uses both the most light hearted fluff and the grimmest tragedy porn, might just be closer to a virtual animated reality.

Also a perverted otaku, such as I shamefully am, might just find his best representation as an eel in the all girls school swimming pool.

Rather disappointing start to the episode considering how episode 6 ended, but that's relatively speaking, the mystery aspect of this show is alot better than in the first 3 or 4 episodes, and a beach episode next week yay... wait wut, oh anime... you never fail to disappoint.

Personally, I'd love to see something like this. To be honest, I've been getting a tad sick of the style they've been using for the TV specials in the past decade. Anything would be a welcome change, really.

The animation in Lupin VS Conan was nice, but like you I didn't really enjoy it. I just didn't find the plot that interesting and it tended to drag. The 2011 TV special was a refreshing change IMO, give it a watch if you haven't already. :)

I assume a random tentacle monster came from the sea and molested all the female characters. If Kubo did anything right, it was that.

It was on the Funimation survey!

I am sure my
multiple
votes were the only meep it got! :S
I added some Gosick here and there too.

I blame Ano Hana and Penguin Drumsticks for hypnotizing the masses!

Fo sho' I'll put it on my list.

Haha, great music video by the by.

Gintama 247 - The end of the arc was rather... eh. I dunno, I like the Shinsegumi bros as supporting characters. As main characters, they're pretty bland. Even that requite emotional ending didn't really do anything for me. Although, I have to admit that the twist -
Hijikata only sends blank letters
- was pretty manly. :p

Natsume 8 - Back story for a character who is supposedly evil or at least an antagonist for Natsume. I guess that's cool.

All this Lupin III talk reminded me that I tried to watch Monkey Punch no Sekai Alice this weekend. I had to stop when the

shaped penises started showing up.
