Arjuna 05:
lol slideshow at the beginning.

The last time that eating a burger gave me visions of the Earth's destruction, I ended up in the hospital with food poisoning. The last time that this lead me to be able to see inside my own intestines.....let's not talk about that.

What the fuck kind of witch doctory is
making someone eat a preserved umbilical cord to reintroduce good bacteria and antibodies into the body?
Seriously? Kawamori presents us with a grave environmental crisis threatening the planet, but his solution is MAGIC AND CRAZY HINDU WORDS. I'll stick to Meriken Burgers being the future of me, thanks.

School Days 05:

Makoto following his heart
and/or dick
. I can't say I blame him,
Kotonoha is way too timid in that department
. Shit is going to hit the fan so gloriously.

Blood-C 05:

Yo, Aged Ones:
Saya can't very well honor the fucking contract if none of you will tell her what it is
.

I'll be disappointed if
Guimauve guy isn't the final boss
.
Dude, what are you doing to yourself?

I seriously fear for your life. Call us 24 hours after you end up finishing them all so we know not to contact your family to check up on you.

How the show juxtaposes the serious moments with the fanservicey ones is indeed jarring, but I don't know how you would have expected anything else from that first episode. Are we forgetting the show started with Madoka getting undressed into a traditional otaku-bait swimsuit? Pandering works like this often interpolate the gratuitous elements with more "dramatic" moments as a way to justify their, well, pandering.

A few things to note here.

Firstly, of course this kind of thing has been a problem since the opening episode - no-one complained about it more than I at the time. However, the show had really begun ratcheting it down from that initial episode so it (seemed) like something the show might have eventually been done two.

Two, having a really silly, light-hearted first episode is at least tonally consistent. Once you start going the 'dark, brooding route' it's not as acceptable to just drop the fanservice in there.

[Natsume 8]

So, even one-off antagonist characters are more interesting and worthwhile as a the central character of an epsidoe than Natsume? Well, after four seasons of him I guess we've kind of run out of stories to tell with him. He doesn't change, there's nothing left to explore in his present or his past.

All this Lupin III talk reminded me that I tried to watch Monkey Punch no Sekai Alice this weekend. I had to stop when the
13oK7.png
shaped penises started showing up.

I might have to watch this. The director and animation director of Alice both worked on Lupin Part III too, which most likely describes it's wacky style. I hated it at first, now I quite enjoy it. :P

Koji Yamamura is amazing, I wish people made more anime like him.
Exactly! And talking about him... it premiered in a lot of places already, so... where is the public access to Muybridge's Strings, NFB? Slacking with this one they are, given the service they usually offer. Damn it, those NFB Mediatheques now monopolizing the shorts.

The event will be broadcast live on the Nico-Nico TV site for free and if you can get there in person, entrance to the event is also free. There's currently quite a lot of speculation and hype among fans about a new TV series (whether it be animated or live action.) While I don't want to get my hopes up, there's a strong possibility something of it may be shown at this event.
I don't know if that is something they would announce in that type of club events done at nicofarre, and even specifically sponsored by the slot machine manufacturer associated with the franchise, but I also hope that some new information comes of it pretty soon. If you haven't seen it before, you can check in the following link a compilation of what some very reliable sources said at the moment the first rumors appeared (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=31658984&postcount=5654).

I'd like to see it in the style of Takeshi Koike.

I don't believe it myself. But I believe in you, who believes in Catsuka. :P
That is the burning spirit necessary! Nothing more is needed...

Look, sometimes friends just want to bathe with other friends. In Japan it happens all the time. It's part of the culture, you heathen, stop making it dirty.
Yeah, it happens the same with the poor Fire Sisters, those lovely siblings... it is all in your imagination, people!

Finally able to pick up my copies of Noein and Planetes when I went back home. Planning on starting Planetes first, then Noein, over the course of the next few weeks as my last college semester is going full pace.

Should I watch the subs for both first and then watch the dubs later down the road? I did not think the Noein dub was bad watching it back on Ani-Mondays, but sadly that was before I had the slightest idea what anime was.

I almost wonder if a lot of people don't know about the public baths. Well, i'm not speaking about the ocean though.

That wasn't a bath.

Do they always blush and flutter a bit before admitting to it?

Do you want to take a bath in the ocean with me?

*flutterblush*
Just so you guys know, all this talk about the latest episode of Flower Declaration made me decide to drop the series for now. :/
How did we not ruin BRS for you enough to make you drop it yet? Or is it because the show is doing it on its own?

I hope somebody from Sentai is reading this thread. There are as many people willing to buy Nichijou in here as there were people willing to buy it in Japan :(

Armor Hunter Mellowlink 2

Mellowlink finds his next target in a colosseum setting where AT pilots fight one another for the crowd. He wants in to get a shot at his target but on the condition he doesn't have to pilot an AT, just man vs machine. Super satisfying arena fight to end the episode.

I think that has to be one of my favourite battles in Mellowlink and, by association, one of the coolest fight scenes in any mecha show.

These discussions do affect perception while watching, heavily. I can definitely understand the sentiment.

*flutterblush*

haha

Of...of course no....Yes.

*flutterblush* *grabs hand*

It depends whether or not they've been recently soiled by an eel.

Makes sense.

Smile Precure 3
[...]
2) I really can't stop thinking about Madoka Magica and the absurdity of having an animal creature tell you to take a pact and collect Cure blossoms (GRIEF SEEDS!!!!) and then believing the animal creature without hesitation. The whole idea of magical girls really IS pretty stupid, and I almost feel like this show is making fun of the whole concept as much as it is embracing it. Like, at some point, the writers are just telling the girls who are watching this that they know the whole scenario is stupid, but that they should still stick around anyway. I don't know if it's because it feels genre savvy or if it's because it is so self-serious that it becomes parodic, but it seems to work at the moment.

Somehow I doubt the folks pumping out Smile have given it that much thought.

Speaking of Sentai, Infinite Stratos may be well and dead in Japan but the BD is still coming out in the US and the dub cast has been listed. Here's the core six:

Ichika – Josh Grelle
Houki – Monica Rial
Charles – Shannon Emerick
Cecilia – Brittney Karbowski
Lingyin – Hilary Haag
Laura – Tiffany Grant

with the other announced roles found here.

If they were clear on their intent from the start then I'm sure the show would be less, well, irregular tonally. They way they've handled mood shifts, tone, fanservice and characterisation across the first part of this series has been nothing if not inconsistent. Perhaps this was there plan all along but if so I feel the show would have benefited from committing to one these approaches rather than attempting to do all of them.
In this case, I do agree you're overthinking this. The intentions of the show were pretty clear since the show was bound to wind down after the first arc finished (surprisingly quick too), and it was fairly predictable how they would handle the ensuing school stuff if we based our expectations on what happened in Episode 1 mainly. The inconsistency was mostly after the first arc ended too, but there were scenes like
Lan's hesitation to pilot the Vox
even in the first arc that were noticeably jarring even to a lesser degree. However, that still doesn't explain these weird tonal shifts like in Episode 5. It would be easier to say it's because of incompetence, but I think a better explanation would be the actual serious moments aren't done well.

Somehow I doubt the folks pumping out Smile have given it that much thought.
You need to watch these episodes. It exists in between parody and self-awareness in a way that makes the whole show more interesting than it probably has any right to be.

Like I said, I can't think of an anime where guys bathe each other and then start feeling each other's man-boobs. When girls bathe, they feel each other up. When guys bathe, they look for the peep-hole so they can see girls feeling each other up.

Maybe you should watch Hajime no Ippo.

They also compare dick-sizes like all good bros do?

She's dark, but with some art styles I'm never sure if it's necessary to call someone black or call out another ethnicity. So I decided to just call her, tan. That, and I didn't know her name. :S
Silvio Berlusconi said much the same thing...look where it got him.

I actually decided to watch Kimi ni Todoke when I kept seeing it pop up on the work list of big-name animators.

Also because I'm a sucker for mushy romance, even when there's not a conclusive resolution.

Just watch the first season.
Branduil meekly caressed his partner's forehead, getting a strand of hair away from his calm sight. The tightness of their embrace was as tender as a mollusk's down side, and their sweat glistened under the moonlight like miniature pearls hidden in the deepest sands of the ocean.

"Turn it off" Branduil said, playfully taking Firehawk's hand away from the keyboard. "They can wait. It's not like they won't recommend School Days to that poor junior by themselves."

Firehawk blushed brightly, the blood on his cheeks threatening to burst through his skin. He was overwhelmed by his companion's sudden declaration -and his staunch determination to get closer to him certainly made matters worse. Long gone were his forlorn memories of the times he had spent with Unknown Soldier. This moment the universe was around him, and his only window to the outside world had been taken by such entirety.

"Just," Firehawk paused for a minute, thinking his next words very thoroughly. When his mouth finally opened it let out a voice with a dejected inflection. "Just be gentle."
I very nearly missed this. What a tragedy that would have been.

I don't know whether I should be satisfied or disappointed that Kou doesn't immediately learn how to pilot a prototype gundam like a pro after being in the cockpit for a minute.

Wait... how did I miss Sentai bringing this? And Tiffany Grant as Laura is so bloody perfect! XD

That opening reminded me of the write-up on that series that Ben recently posted, amazing read (as always)

To be honest, that's where I found out my info regarding the directors working on both Alice and Part III, ha ha. Absolutely love his articles, thanks for the link all the same though, they're brilliant!

Reminds me that I need to see Legend of the Gold of Babylon. I want to see what Seijun Suzuki did in the animated realm; I loved Branded to Kill.

I don't know if I want to see Babylon or not. I've pretty much seen every other Lupin movie / special (Fuma is my favourite by far), so it feels kind of odd to miss it out. It's just that I've heard so many bad things about Babylon in the past, it's really put me off watching it. Maybe I'll brave through it at some point... I'm hoping it's one of those things where I feel "actually, it wasn't so bad after all."

Crayon Shin-chan 9: The Adult Empire Strikes Back
Night on the Galactic Railroad
Junkers Come Here
Barefoot Gen
Super Defense Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?
Belladonna of Sadness
Horus: Prince of the Sun
Spring & Chaos
Chie the Brat
Genius Party (technically from the past 5 yrs - worth seeing if you haven't tho)

Thanks for the list. Lots of movies I have never heard of, should be good to explore them.

Gauche the Cellist

Enjoyable movie. I like watching old anime movies where the backgrounds look nice and detailed. I also liked it when the MC kept acting like an asshole to some of the animals.

Takahata is continuously proving that he is a top tier director.

& Touga is a C-tier Akio so it's kind of appropriate.

Exactly! Although it's kind of hard to put Akio on a graph with any other character, even Touga without one one of those wiggly lines that you use for putting two things with very different values on the same axis.

Natsume Shi 8

Given how much of a static character Natsume is it's only inevitable that this series decides to start fleshing out some of the more forgettable characters. Still, it really didn't stop me from enjoying this any more than any other good episode of Natsume.

Who knows, he might score a tag.
it just isn't worth it man

Well, Suzuki movies are absolutely not for everyone. Although I'm just going off the one movie of his I've seen plus what I've read.

Give it a shot! For science.

Somehow I doubt the folks pumping out Smile have given it that much thought.

Just because the franchise is overtly commercial, it doesn't mean that it's creatively bankrupt. Precure has always been designed to work on two levels, one for the children and one for the otaku. There's nothing to indicate that the writers are lazy/cynical/etc. because kids can't tell the difference and that anything good that they produce is accidental.

Doesn't need to be, siblings sleep together all the time.

Who are we to presume what counts as cleansing in another culture? I'm willing to let Karen and Tsukihi broaden my horizons.

ef – a tale of memories Episodes 9 – 12

Overall not a bad show, even if some of the dialogue was cringe worthy. All of the main characters were likeable, except Kei. It’s also one of the prettiest shows I’ve ever seen.
