Jeremy Lin: Asian American, Harvard Grad... NBA great?

Despite one playing his 6th start and the other going on 7yrs there is one thing to note with regard to comparing point guards when they go head to head - their point totals almost never reflect their match-up. Point guards and, to a lesser extent, shooting guards are almost entirely playing against the defense that is behind their assigned defender. The man on them really isn't of much consequence because pretty much any point guard can get around another point guard pretty easily unless they are giving them a crap-ton of room to shoot.

Thats why saying stuff like "OH CRAP CURRY JUST DEMOLISHED ROSE!!!!!" earlier this year (and I'm a big Steph fan) is just stupid because what really matters is how the defense behind the point guard is playing (who the defenders are and how they are spaced on the floor).

Thought this was pretty common knowledge?
But really, Deron destroyed Lin

Nets help defense sucks real bad, Chandler is one of the best help defenders in the league. Amare and Melo don't play defense. Part of the reason why this current Knicks squad won't do anything bigger than a few playoff wins.

I was completely unaware that some Filipinos were seriously racist against Asians and considered themselves a separate race until I saw this self-ownage on Youtube.

Really, Filipinos?

Not all Filipinos are racist. It's probably just that guy and few vocal yet stupid commenters. Trust me, I've seen a lot of stupid comments when reading various local articles, it makes my brain burst.

I believe a lot of my kind in the Philippines consider themselves Asian. I have yet to actually meet one who considers himself as a Pacific Islader.

Ignoring the ridiculousness of using individual match-ups to gauge how two teams match up, I'm just going to say no on that one. Hell no, actually.

i must know who this is

Saw the entire Knicks game and I was impressed.

The kid has to learn how to handle double teams better and be a little more careful with the ball, but those problems can usually be corrected. I expect to see his turnovers and points go down when Melo gets back (assuming he is 100%).

All in all Lin hit some big shots and made some big plays with Marion and JKidd guarding him, two of the toughest defensive guards in the league. The Mavs were definitely giving a full effort and while he still has some rough edges it appears the kid is legit.

I was also equally impressed with Fields. He is a great complementary piece. Now lets see if Mr. Pringles knows how to use all of these guys at the same time when Melo comes back.

If only we had competent ownership maybe the Lakers could have had Lin. :(
I do believe the Lakers and the Mavs tried to sign Lin but he pursued golden state instead.

As a Bulls fan, I'm not gonna lie. . I feel the same way. Last time I was this excited about the NBA was when I was watching Jordan. It might be that Rose seems to always be injured. When they play each other who do I root for? My Bulls or the team I currently like to watch play.
lol, I'm sure like-minded "fans" of other teams have a similar dilemma.

What I like about Jeremy is all he wants to do is go out and play basketball. I feel like if any other NBA player were in his position, that guy would already be on Letterman and basking in the fame.

How does this make sense? If he was any other NBA player he would most likely not even be worth mentioning. The story would be totally different. Come on.

Anyone still think he's under rated in 2k12? Yes I know there have been 3 roster updates. The guy cannot hit shit in game, although his passing is good. Yes he is a PG .... but he makes points in real life, at least right now.

wow i'm impressed.....i wish him luck in becoming the next big star. maybe this will open doors and inspired other young asian kids to play sports.

I can make a list longer than Greg Oden's dick of players who are better than Lin and have been for a much longer time yet haven't done Letterman or have "basked in the fame". He's not really anything special in that regard. This kind of shit is what is most annoying about Linsanity and is probably based on some borderline racism.

JR Smith is another minimum salary guy.

Decent stats like Lin.

Just as humble.

Too bad he's surround by crazy.

Not that I blame them for losing their shit in CHina.

Uh...Lin is more humble than all those guys combined. For one thing, he doesn't have that "swagger" attitude that you see pretty much everywhere else in the NBA and that turns a lot of fans off -- he is actually relatable.

More people like Lin and Kevin Love and less like Kobe and Lebron and you will definitely see more mainstream acceptance of the sport.

Wtf are you talking about

The newer crop like Durant, Rose and Westbrook seem fine to me. To me, they never seem to have a better than the rest attitude.

I think you and many others are missing the point of his post. He's not talking about basketball players that are simply "as good as or better than" Lin. He's talking about players that are in Lin's position publicly. Players that are getting huge amounts of media attention, not only doing well in games.

So really, he's probably most referring to Lebron, who basks in the spotlight and tries to take advantage of it whenever he can.

All young players preach the humbleness

This was LeBron when he was drafted. Look at this humble motherfucker, he doesn't give a shit about rookie of the year.

Problem is, knicks were without thier 2 best defenders that game. Shumpert was out, and Chandler barely played at all because of all the damn fouls, he had a total of like 14 minutes

wow i'm impressed.....i wish him luck in becoming the next big star. maybe this will open doors and inspired other young asian kids to play sports.

LOL wtf...young asian kids do play sports already. The only benefit now is that some will have the confidence now to feel they may be able to do it professionally.

This has been true so far in New York. I know tons of people who aren't into any sports suddenly watching Knicks games just for Jeremy Lin. The entire phenomenon is blowing my mind.

GTFO for lumping Kobe in with Lebron.

They might be different players for sure (Kobe is definitely surlier -- Lebron is just a punk) -- but they both purposely give off that "rapper" vibe.

:lol datsracist.gif

I await Heat vs Knicks this week. Linsanity will be at an all time high if Knicks win.

Please..there are plenty of young stars who work hard and are fun to watch. Durant, B Griffin for example. I cheer for Lin of course and wish him all the best but he is definitely benefiting from being in a media hype zone.

no but ny was a disaster when melo wasn't injured.
they weren't when he was, and lost to a shitty team in his first game back.
that's conclusive evidence if i ever saw one.

and oh, denver is a better team now that they traded melo.

Melo was bad in New Jersey, but not for the reasons everyone expected. He was hardly a black hole ( took 11 shots ) and deferred when he had the chance. Melo just looked rusty, and frustrated because of it ( and because of a few calls that went against him in the second half ). That loss was more about trying to incorporate a couple of players back into the line up, in a season with few practices in between games, and the perimeter players being scorched by D-will( they really missed Shumpert that game), than it was about selfish or bad play from Melo.

I'm just saying, give the team a few weeks before we start to deem them as failures, especially considering how tough their upcoming schedule is. And it remains to be seen if Denver is not better now than it was with Melo either. Their 18-15 now ( I know Nene's been hurt) but let's see where they're at when the season ends, then we can accurately compare the pre and post Melo teams.

Melo was bad in New Jersey

wut. that doesn't even describe the shit that Melo has been on this year.

but seriously, that offense didn't look anything close to what it was during the winning streak. Forget Lin getting bombed from orbit by Deron - the entire Knicks offense looked completely disjointed against one of the worst teams in the league. No one expects NY to have a defense with pringles. No one.

But they looked like shit on the offensive end. No excuse for that. Especially against NJ. Especially after spending 80+ million on two of the supposed best offensive players in the game. Especially after being gifted a point guard to save them from themselves. That offense was entirely different from what it was just a week ago. The movement was gone. The asshole 3s went up. The bitchassness from the "leaders" was back and in full effect.

denver was a top 4 team in the west before gallo was injured.
so their end of the season record will not reflect how good they are.
and no one claims melo is a black hole, but everyone claims he's a cancer,
which i might add i've already proven.

but let's be honest here, d'antoni doesn't teach a lick of defense.
they wont pass the first round in the east.

I can't really Excuse Amare, dude has been playing like he's lost for most of the season. Especially after coming back from injury, he looks like he's lost a step tbh. He's not cutting to the basket at all, and settling for that shaky jumper he loves to fall back on more than ever. Dude is soft right now and I'm more worried about him getting it back together more than Melo. Melo on the other hand was asked to create for others because of awful their point guard play was, so I can understand the drop-off in production, that's not his game.

All I'm saying is though, is Melo is coming back to the team with some unusual circumstances surrounding it and should be given some time to get it together. And of course a player with such a Major role in the offense is gonna disrupt the continuity of a new-look offense a bit when coming back ( especially considering he can't create for others); Every one now has to figure out how to best adjust to each other, not just Melo.

Is it wrong to expect someone getting paid like him to come back and play at least decent? nah, not at all. But to say he can't turn it around and play to expectations is another issue. Just wait for the break and see what the team can do once they get some practices in and gel a bit.

When I think of cancer, I think of some major disruptive force. I'll give you last season, Melo's presence in Denver was a major distraction with all of the trade talk. But for most of his career in Denver he was nothing but positive and even now, most of his former teammates speak only positive things about him, save for Coach Karl( but recently Kenyon Martin has spoken out against Karl in favor of Melo.)

The Knicks have been playing pretty good D this season too, but most of that can probably be accredited to Mike Woodson and the addition of Tyson Chandler.

The Knicks have been waiting for a decade. What do they do to their Messiah PG? Give him one of the biggest chuckers in the league in JR.

Nice.

Just wait til Melo comes back and 'gels'
Just wait til Amare gets healthy
Just wait til the defense kicks in
Just wait til JR gets it
Just wait til Lin gets them all on the same page
Just wait til NY makes another trade

They've completely overhauled their entire franchise AND pulled a miracle out of their ass - and they're still not even looking like they could make it out of the 2nd round. If this wasn't a lockout season, they'd probably be in even deeper shit.
Lebron is no where near as bad as some make him out to be.
He's worse.

"I can see myself going back to Cleveland". The guy just needs to shut the hell up because he is just that disconnected from the world now.
