Guild Wars 2 Press Beta [Prepurchase Is Live]

Got my confirmation email (it took a while for me, so for those worried hang in there), and I'm now ready for Anet to save me from the MMORPG-ghetto!

I'm still hoping that crafting is going to be useful in this game. I'm scared after the mess that crafting was in SWTOR and others. If armor/weapon crafting is garbage, then cooking and such would be more vital.

I love you.

One thing that i'm curious, if you need to sign a NDA... what will happen with people that isn't from USA,Canada and Europe :(? I hope we can join the beta testing.

you do once you get in.

and once you do get in, the NDA says you can't upload any pics or video of the game you can't even say you got in.

What i mean is how do you sign? do you sign a paper that they send you or just accept something online that says: I accept the NDA <- click.

The last one. It's a gate akin to "please read the TOS and accept".

Except this one is the big one.

I'm not too sure they watch NeoGAF so we might be able to say we're in? IDK.

i think just to be on the safe side we should be clock and dagger if we got in or not.

not really just kidding =P

I don't think it's wise to try it, but depending on how the Beta Servers are set up, maybe have a plan to meet up. Say, all GAFers pick the first sever that begins with "G" and then look for a specific guild?

I'll just be happy to play, and honestly this is just to kind of test the game out to see what class I want to play. I'll probably avoid large chunks intentionally because I want to play them 'for real' when the game comes out. Worry about finding people later when it counts.

i think its gonna count from the get go. i can't imagine doing dungeons blind or on my own.

In the Guild Wars 1 beta, they e-mailed you the NDA, you had to print it off, sign it, and mail it in, along with a photocopy of your driver's license.

No idea if it'll work the same way here, but that was the way they did it back then.

really? i really hope its just click.

If they're being closed enough about it that they don't want you to even say whether or not you're in the beta, then I don't think they're going to screw around with a webpage where you just click 'I accept' and they have no way of confirming your age, identity, whether you only have one beta account, etc.

This doesn't sound like it's a beta weekend where it's basically just a time-limited demo; this seems like the real deal. (Edit: Whoops, maybe I'm wrong about that, with the way the FAQ is talking about "Beta Events". I mean I doubt the security is going to be any less strict, but maybe it's not a full-time test the way it was back in GW1's day)

Actually it'll be easy - just have people who got in PM each other if they got in, keep a list of people who have applied and you'll have a list to PM to check and see if others got in.

This is all only on here though.

In game, I'm definitely making the "Guardian Assault Force" with GAF as its acronym :P

NDAs at this late in the game are somewhat pointless anyhow. It'll just be a repeat of what happened with The Old Republic no matter what they do.

Better to open the floodgates and get people talking.

I guess I'm baffled as well at the point of any NDA's. Given the amount of information that is already out there, it just seems really silly.

"The humming bird sips the sugar water at dawn."

If this isn't our super secret confirmation I'm going to be really pissed.

I'm kidding!

No I'm not. >:|

Yeah I don't really get the point myself. After awhile you have nothing to idea and the NDA is pretty much pointless. Blizzard's always let up the NDA early in their betas because they understand that (WoW's NDA was up before 0.6, meaning there was a good several months with the info out there.)

Protecting an incomplete product. Press are different then users. They always have an array of restrictions. A bunch of crazy users mauling the web about something that was planned to be patched months before retail? It's probably better to not have that for everyone's sake.

I can't see them running an NDA for all that long considering how open they've been and how positive the impressions have been ever since the first reveal 1.6 years ago. Allowing the press into a Beta and then allowing them to talk about their experiences within days of playing means they're confident. Obviously when these public betas start, the game won't be entirely finished because that would mean it would be nearly out and have no NDA. So I'm guessing they'll keep the NDA on until they consider the game to be done.

Let's get down to the nitty gritty.

Any reason why signups are only for 48 hours? Is it possible beta will start this weekend or next?

Since it's a strict NDA it could happen as early as that. You get in, hush hush, play that bitch.

I can't see it being this weekend because the game is quite large and could take people a long time to download if play starts on Saturday and they're selected on Friday. The greatest possibility is that it's one of the two weekends after that if they intend to keep it small, because that gives them a good time frame to ramp up as we go through March and into April. However, those two weekends are the worst possible for me as I'll be leaving to go home for spring break the Friday of the first one and returning the Sunday of the second one. My laptop isn't good enough to play this game. ;_;

It won't be this weekend, they're very much set on starting in March.

The weekend after next is March. :)

Also, I noticed something relating to the original GW2 thread about how targeting and lock-on works, and how it's more like an action game (avoiding things with dodge and movement).

If you watch the first part of the Norn Yogscast video, when you see Simon's engineer fire at the enemies coming over the hill, you can clearly see that his targeting helps orientate him towards his target but his shots can miss (impacting the trees instead of just hitting the mob).

Meaning, the targeting reticle, once you fire an ability, will aim in the direction of the target, but if they've moved since they fired, it can miss.

It's kind of complicated, but I think it supports moving while shooting/attacking, imo. If your targets are running at you (say, an Elementalist fighting a Warrior) - it can be easy to hit them coming at you. But if the Warrior is dodging left to right (or hell, even zig-zaging) before moving towards the Elementalist, he will be sure to avoid shots unless the Elementalist paces their attacks.

There's an option in the general menu that has some kind of target functionality and based on what it's called(the name escapes me at the moment) I'm assuming that say like you fire a skill in a direction, if it hits an enemy that enemy will become your target. Entirely my assumption, but I could be wrong.

It won't be this weekend. Im thinking March with events all to Aprilish with a release around mid May - early June.

ugh god, really is the game that close? I'm gonna explode. I can't believe it's been so long for this game's development and it's already almost here!!!!!

June is a pretty good estimate given their March & April beta weekend schedule. Right now it's been in development for 4 years 11 months from a preliminary standpoint, full blown production wise it's 4 years 6 months so they'll likely release an entirely new type of MMO in the less time than it takes other developers to make a half-assed WoW clone.

The email I am supposed to get is the one just thanking me for signing up? Or is there one that says "You're in!"

The one thanking you for signing up.

Just the thanking part. No one's in yet. I assume after the 48 hours they will count 'em up, and start throwing darts for the weekend after next. (one would hope!)

ugh just realized that I'm fucking super torn on Guardian or Mesmer.

I need beta so I can decide!

From the Sign Up thread, but it needs to be shared here too;

Finally. As someone who tried to crawl up every little valley, check every little path and end up finding nothing in the entire World of Warcraft, the idea of stepping into an MMO where there are little surprises around every corner is just... damn it, guys... finally. An MMO that looks to deliver on the promise of an actual game world worth exploring.

Hype ++

That video has led me to conclude that this game will destroy my personal life unless I exercise immense self control. Because I am a massive explorer at heart. I did the same thing with WoW.

It's rather interesting that a team can make such a solid game in less time it takes to make a clone of another.

So I'm watching the TB video for Staff Guardians.

They took Anivia from LoL and put her into staff form.

Awesome!

That video actually made me consider using the Hammer as my other weapon - the ring of "fuck you, you're not getting away" made my jaw drop - you can see it in action later in the video when the player drops it, punts the mob with the hammer ability, and they hit the wall like eggs thrown against a house. Absolutely amazing. Imagine doing that, switching to Greatsword, unleashing mad damage, hitting them with chains when they run away, getting them back close, more damage, switch to hammer, dodge roll in front of them running away, launch them back towards where you want them, drop the ring again... god... awesomeness

You get shit for exploring too now!

Remember that awesome feeling you had when you found the troll village in Darkshore? Phat loot awaits where you explore now! WUUUUT

I'm with you brother. I've been following this game for years and each day the hype meter inside my mind keeps climbing and I don't think it can go any higher. Saving up my sick hours and blowing most if not all of them when this game releases.

Yeah. Competent PvP, PvE, and exploring? UUUUNNNNGGGH!

PVP you can jump in at level one son.

PVE you can find BY exploring. You could be out in some fuckin NOWHERELAND and "bing! The evil TROLL LORD is storming towards the village down the river. FUCK HIM UP!"

And you would be like :O and take his ass out with some killer tactics and get phat loot, continue on and find his fuckin CAVE that has a jump puzzle to the top where his phat stash is. FUUUUUCK

I wish I were in a position to do that. I'm getting my MBA at the moment, so it's next to impossible for me to devote huge swaths of time to any game - nevermind something this potentially dangerous. That said, I'm signed up for the Beta and it allows you to sidekick (thank you, City of Heroes!), so maybe my lack of time won't keep me from having fun on occasion with it once it comes out.

But yeah, sorely tempted to marathon the damn place....

I know, I know. Shut up. ;p

You need to stop lol. This is killing me and the game still has months to go before release. =)
