I'm very passionate about manga as a medium (or, to be precise, the entire comic medium), and manga fans are the most guilty of "it's so cliche." So yeah, who cares? Well I do.

That's because vast amounts of manga formulaic to a fault.

for the most part, it's not too hard to read the first three chapters of a weekly and determine where the rest of the plot is going to go.

My point is that's irrelevant to the actual quality of the series. I mean we can never really tell where Bleach is going...doesn't mean it isn't objectively worse than a "formulaic" series.

OK, I'm home sick, bored, and my interest is piqued. But there is no way in all the pits of hell that I'm getting involved in this topic. As a pretext, it must first be established that the said discussion is not about the manga Solanin. The manga itself would usually be the topic of discussion, as this is indeed a thread about such material, however the topic is the use of the word "cliche" when describing such a work. Therefore I do have one question and one question only.

What are you trying to accomplish?

What? Bleach (or at least, what I read of Bleach) is very formulaic. Maybe not in the overall plot, but definitely going from month to month there is (was) a strong sense of predictability about things.

Saying something is cliché is very much a legitimate complaint IMO. Beyond predictability it implies mediocrity also. That a series "used a well-worn narrative device I could see a mile away and didn't even do it well".

So did you predict Aizen was going to turn into a semen-covered man-beast when he was first introduced?

Since I got a Vita today, I finally own a device that can take (shitty) digital pictures, so I'm gonna take the chance to show the manga (and 1 novel) stuff I bought this month:

Can't we all just be friends and talk about Minamoto-kun Monogatari 21?

Minamoto-kun Monogatari 21

Very little things happened.

...oh.

Must be nice to live in a manga country with shit load of disposable income.

Is that Conan volume 7? It's so daunting starting a new series that has like 70 volumes.

It's the special cases volume 7. We're up to volume 72 here for the proper series, so the special cases books are mixed in to have a fixed release schedule for the normal volumes.

I don't know if I've ever seen manga volumes with such a different size. Everything I collect is just the typical Viz slightly smaller volume. I do miss the slightly larger volumes that Dragon Ball was originally printed in. Have the first 8 or so in a larger format that looked a lot better before they switched to the smaller red volumes.

Are you unable to read or something?

Would explain your crazy love of bleach.

I never mentioned the mage council at all, and I never said they were the most powerful mages alive.

You are unable to analyse anything.
Would explain your crazy love of one piece.
Huge magic tournament with the greatest wizards alive
You mentioned the greatest wizards alive, without mentioning who the wizards are. That´s so typical of you to say these kind of asinine remarks, even though the manga has not mentioned anything about having the strongest wizards alive in the tournament. But i guess you have your own delusional fantasy of what´s happening in manga instead of just reading about what´s actually happening in manga. That´s explains everything.

Fairy Tail

Um... yeah, so how exactly were Raven Tail not disqualified for repeatedly cheating? That was stupid.

Also, Lucy had not one but two pantyshots? Sure she often wears short skirts, but doesn't have pantyshots shown very often.

Overall... meh. Lucy should have won that.

Fairy Tail

This tournament is dumb. How do you not keep track of outside interference?

EDIT: Charibro's right. SHE WAS CAUGHT ATTACKING THE AUDIENCE. How was she not disqualified there and then?

That both that AND them interfering in the fight and disabling that spell are such blatant acts of cheating that it's just about impossible to believe that the officials really didn't notice, unless they've been paid off TO not notice, of course.

well there is also that corrupt higher up character whose a zeref loyalist

Seriously fairy tail? Are they going all prince of tennis in which all the side characters have to lose all the matches?

And wow... this might the first time I noticed pantsu. Mangaka tends to be a bit tactful about those (not much about boobs though). Desperate times eh?

And ippo... not my favorite fight... but it's pretty damn interesting. Have there been any hints on when Ippo season 3 anime will be out? I remember them mentioning there were plans after 2nd one ended...

hey mysticwhip, Asano art shits all over Kishimoto art. How do you feel about that?

Aw, can't respond to me?
Yo damn survivor.

You are like Rider among men, saving the manga industry single handedly.

Yamada and the Seven Witches 1

This is the next manga by the author of Yankee and Megane. I enjoyed the first chapter, but I think it was a bad idea to resolve everything in just one chapter, I wonder what the catch will be for the next one.
Pleasantly surprised it was enjoyable. Also enjoying the latest Yankee chapters that have been released. I really love the design of Daichi's sister. You can really tell it was drawn by a woman.

Well the setting has some original and not-so-original elements (I mean, a promise made between kids ten years ago ? Come on...but I'm a sucker for Yakuza in any story), it just needs more comedy and less love-drama-fidgeting.

Just to go off on a tangent I really hate the idealization of the yakuza in manga. Mostly because it always the same joke, and partly because when you idealize them you can never get a good story out of it. I can't remember reading anything that didn't make me groan when a yakuza showed up. Its the same with wrestling, you'll never read a realistic perspective on pro wrestling manga. even if its suppose to be a serious drama. It will always be a secret fighting technique from the US.

Let's Lagoon
A guy and a girl wake up washed up on a desterted island. The boy lost his memory.
Is this based on that one DS game? Girls gets a fever and its actually life threatening. hallelujah.

Seriously, I think your arguing skills are the equivalent of Tite's writing skills.

What's asinine about my remarks? They made this tournament out to be huge and they most certainly did say that some of the top guilds come to compete with very powerful wizards, whether they are the strongest alive or not is not really the point, the point is that despite having many major guilds and very powerful wizards present, they don't seem able to enforce or monitor rules, even when they are so obviously broken.

I came to that conclusion precisely by analysing what I read in the manga, and I don't see how anyone could not reach that conclusion very easily if they know how to look at anything with an intelligent eye. Sadly I don't think you have an intelligent eye.

Can you dispute that or are you going to go off on a tangent to try and prove me wrong about something I am clearly right about?

Also I love your last line there! You're such an incredible hypocrite it's really unfathomable.

Diamond no Ace
This is mediocre at best. I'm 30 chapters in and close to dropping this. Maybe its just the translation but I'm kind of surprised this won any awards at all.

Ch 44. enjoying the last 10 chapter much more. I think its a mixture of different scanners and being a week out of reading Rookies. Its one of my favorites so I can't help but compare it with DnA.

You cognitive skills are as derp as Oda´s.

First of all, you said the greatest wizards alive. That´s such a derp statement. Especially when this tournament is only for one country and it´s name is Fiore. Stop backtracking and changing goal posts about what you said.

Intelligent eye? More like a derp eye.

1- The stadium is filled with thousands of people, and they would not notice what Natsu did since they are watching the fight.

2- The little girl was between FT members who noticed the hair after Natsu pulled it out.

3- Mages with significant powers (Makarov, Yajima) noticed that Lucy´s magic got cancelled, that´s why Makarov was pissed at Ivan.

Moving goal posts on your part is funny.

It does not surprise me that you are trying to put other manga down just for your to show precious one piece to be better. SMFH.

MUST. ORDER. THEM. OCD. COMING. OUT...

This month I only bought 8 volumes of 3x3 Eyes (I swear I'll be buy ALL forty volumes before I die).

Must be nice to live in a manga country with shit load of disposable income.
You should see in France, it's kind of ridiculous the amount of available manga. It's second only to Japan. (but it's kind of expensive, from 6€ to 9€ depending on the manga/publisher, and there's only tankobon format, the previous attempt at serialization having failed...mainly because of their monthly format)

Well here (and most gag manga) yakuza aren't really idealized, but more like parodied to an extreme (I also liked how they did it in Seto No Hanayome) and while they are here part of the premise, they don't play a proeminent role (Ichijou and Kirizaki have the focus).
For me idealization of the yakuza would be more in series like Sanctuary or Ryu Ga Gotoku where there a basically yakuza chairman saints (It's particularly egregious in RGG where Kazuma is one of the most decent human beings in the setting and yet is the chairman of a huge organized crime group which lives off well, crime).

C'm'on Alibaba, just slaughter Kashim's ass. He deserves it anyway.

What is derp? And how is calling them some of the strongest wizards derp? Do you dispute that? What they've shown us certainly indicates they have the strongest guilds therefore it makes sense that they have the strongest wizards. Whether they are the strongest in the country or the world, again it DOES NOT MATTER. It is BESIDE THE POINT. The point was that they really should be paying attention to this shit and either they aren't, or like the cliche are ignoring it for the sake of the main characters to lose for no real reason. Even if they aren't the strongest, do you really think it's ok for them to blatantly disregard basic rules for the sake of the main characters losing? BULLSHIT.

And yeah Yajima, one of the judges noticed and did nothing about outside interference, so normal! I can only hope next chapter something comes from it but the way this chapter ended it doesn't seem likely.

How have I moved goalposts? Seriously you have no idea what you're talking about.

I'm going to ignore your OP comment since you're clearly a massive moron.

Oh man been a while since the last bandwagon (Gamaran? I don't even remember). Magi's really really good.

Magi 73

Does anyone know if you're supposed to say Rukh with a hard h or a soft h? I don't know if I'm supposed to use my Hebrew voice when I read it
