Pokemon Black 2 and White 2 confirmed for Nintendo DS

Wow, I'm happy to come home to this news. If I recall correctly, pokemon were the first games that made me get a DS (lite), and I'm glad I can play them on my DSi/DS lite without having to buy a new system. :)

I just did a quick google search, and it sounds like DS games can still be played on the 3DS system as well, so that's good. I think I personally prefer 2D graphics over 3D models and effects for handheld games.

The fact that its not a new gen is pretty awful IMO. I think they are testing just how far they can go with the rehashes. Weird it isn't on the 3DS either.
How so? It was obvious that we were at least going to get some form of third version before the sixth generation of games started, ala Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, and Platinum. The two versions of it thing is new, but it's still the same principle. In any case though, there was no way they were going to just jump from Black & White ==> the 6th generation of Pokemon games, so I'm not sure why exactly you're surprised that there's something in between the two, as there always has been.

Was definitely not expecting this. How are they going to continue the story of a mainline Pokemon? Granted the ending of those games seemed pretty abrupt and open for continuation.

I've finally gotten over my dejected stupor (mostly) and decided this is preferable to a Pokemon Grey. Despite being on DS, which is still a bummer.

It hasn't even been 2 years since B/W came out in Japan. Why the hell would you expect a new Gen so soon?

So, I love Pokemon and will probably get one of these when they are out but how much different from the first Black and White are they going to be? I mean, with the 3rd entry you know what to expect, pretty much the same game with some additions/improvements to the game and story. Are these just going to be like, the same game? I mean, if it's the same region then that means same gyms and towns right? And same pokes.

OMG, this is biggest Nintendo trolling ever done. No Sony or MS fanboys will ever come close to this.

Has NCL any control over the Pokemon Co.? Considering how much time and effort Nintendo is spending over 3DS, announce games with such sales power for it's predecessor while the new system is on fire doesn't seems to reflect the company's direction.

Why not put this on the 3DS, Nintendo? Why not try to sell new hardware? This decision really baffles me. I'm sure more people own a plain ol' regular DS, but wouldn't a GameFreak developed 3DS specific Pokemon title help shift some units.

Does the '2' in the titles not mean anything to you?

I skipped B&W mostly, was waiting for Grey...but I guess I should go get the first now that there's a direct sequel.

"Among the many new changes in Pokémon Black & White Version 2, Masuda has composed an entire 4-disc soundtrack of dubstep. Enjoy!"

"But, sir... can the Nintendo DS even HANDLE dubstep?" "Why, of course! What do you think the 'DS' stands for?" *Iwata laughs*

Hah that's great!

I'm disappointed it's not 3DS, but still can't pass up on the sequels... I'm pretty sure we'll get a mainline 3DS title of some sort next year, since it would definitely help the 3DS keep its momentum.

If these were going to be exactly like Crystal, Emerald, and Platinum they would've just dubbed this "Gray" and got this over with. Instead they seem to have decided to make a proper sequel to BW's story.

The latest post from Masuda giving us "White Kyurem" and "Black Kyurem" as names for these seems to support their sequel claim.

The facts are:

1. If it was a 3DS games, it would be just a port of B/W technically speaking, with just 3D attached and maybe StreetPass (no AR, no 3D battles).

2. A new generation was out of question, B/W is too recent and we needed a third version.

3. R/S remakes were unlikely because of the third version fact. Probably next year.

From a perspective of selling software, wouldn't a DS game sell more, potentially? From a consumer perspective of people who have a DS but don't own a 3DS, is there a downside to this I'm not seeing?

No, but there is a downside to those who do own a 3DS (compared to releasing them as 3DS games).

People forget that DS games run on the 3DS. lol
Also, Thanks Pokemon Co. for making the wait for the 3DS redesign more bearable.

oh man that is so strange and on DS oh well I guess I have to buy the first games now I was waiting but 3DS will have to play them

This makes no sense. Gamefreak must have more say in Pokemon than I thought, cause there's no way Nintendo would not release it on the 3DS.

Prehaps. I believe they have two development teams and normally one of them is making mainline games while the other is remaking or reestablishing (IE: Crystal, Platnium) games.

GameFreak was one of the very first developers to receive a 3DS devkit. I'm sure they are making a 3DS title. If I had to make a bet, this was planned along a very long time ago.

And as for NCL? I doubt they care considering they will be able to market and sell this game to a 35M DS and 5M 3DS userbase. For software sales, its probably pretty dang good for their bottom line. And I'm sure they'll find a way to market this alongside 3DS despite the fact it may very well have no 3DS enhancements whatsoever (which is a bit lol worthy)

Ultimately, there will be a mainline Pokemon title on the 3DS.

They have a 1/3 stake in the franchise. So not even majority share.

Isn't the distinction kind of just splitting hairs? New forms usually have different stats and attacks anyway.

New Pokemon would take up slots in the Pokedex so that definitely won't be the case unless Black Kyurem and White Kyurem are the first two Pokemon of Gen 6.

Wait....2? When has a Pokemon game ever had a number in it?

Gold and Silver, before they came out.

Well, it implies it's a sequel but from the Pokemon franchise I expect a sequel to have a new continent, tainer, gyms, pokemon and story line (and have come to expect a new enemy team since RSE).

I just don't see the point in making a sequel set in the same land just to expand on the story. If it's like, a direct sequel with my trainer then there would need to be a way to transfer over all my stuff (unless they force everyone to pull and Ash and release all their pokemon).

I just don't know what to expect. I guess it'd be cool if they changed the progression. Like, you start in a different place and don't have to do gym battles. Mix it up a bit.

EDIT: Could this just be the grey version just split up? Like how Crystal etc expand on the story and game except this time they want even more money so split up the 3rd version into two games? Adding a number to them but pretty much being the same game with improvements and more story?
Do we actually have any info at all apart from the legendaries/kyurem forms?

Yeah, I thought of that and I agree with you. It just feels like a step backwards from their big 3DS push.

I suppose there's a lot to evaluate, though. Original DS's are still selling quite well (mainly due to their discount prices / cost less to replace if a child breaks it) and software sales are bound to end up better in the long run. Just feels like a missed chance to push their new hardware to me, and it really does need a push.
