GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

I'm just sticking this here because I don't think it's threadworthy and can think of no better thread for it.

I was one of the Animal Crossing Pioneers a decade back, and thus have an Animal Crossing disc with FOR PROMOTIONAL USE ONLY NOT FOR RESALE on it. Seemed to be identical to the retail game other than that, but today somebody asked me to rip it with Wii homebrew to compare checksums with ones he provided from the retail version to be sure. I'd already ripped it, so I got the checksums. Result: Yes, they are identical.

I'm surprised to see no mention of the return of crediar to the development of DIOS MIOS Lite. It allows you to play Gamecube games from the SD card with close to 100% compatibility. The only games that aren't working at the moment are games that utilize audio streaming, games that require disc swapping and a handful of games that don't boot (which are being worked on).

Here's a great video of DML in action: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u4ZgC6bw4OU

The process looks a little intense for my taste. You rip, process the file with two windows executables, then you have to install wads. I mean, half of my problem is that I don't have windows at home, but I really appreciate how Config does all of this stuff for you right on the console.

http://youtu.be/4KKKA5_arEE

Also, lol, 'win-RARE'. Good walkthrough though.

Is it kosher to discuss injecting legit roms in wads? I recently came across my old Shadowrun cart at my parents house and want to play again, but the VC interface and general awesomeness has spoiled me. Is there a relatively straightforward method for converting the cart/rom into a wad?

*prod* :P

Also, I think you said previously that there was an issue with the Red Wii LE Mario Anniversary console, or did I imagine that?

Yeah, I don't really have time to try to find some of these things, unfortunately...

And I can't think what that issue might of been. I'm pretty sure it wasn't me.

I'm stunned, simply stunned. So professional looking. Nintendo really couldn't have done a better job with the interface.

Small nitpick: how come it doesn't save when I change the background?
It does save the cover design (cover flow, tiles, ...) but it always reverts the background to the nature one. Damnit.

Also, ripping resident evil 4 wii edition doesn't work - always crashes.
Zelda TP and Deadly Creatures worked fine.
All PAL btw.

You can, by editing the configuration/text file manually and saving it.

It's around here.

Like for example:
I want to choose what sort of covers display in the console and GUI flow modes.
covers = 1, 0
cover_style = standard, 3d, disc
You can edit and change many other things too.

There's also an application that lets you do that easily on your PC , add pictures, etc. and it automatically puts everything were it's supposed to be.

Weird about RE4 not ripping, does the disc has any scratches or something that may affect it?

RE4 disc is practically brand new, I only played about 1 hour or less (already completed the game 3 times on the cube). Weird.
I'll just complete ripping my other games (Metroid Prime Trilogy is huuuuuuuge lol), then see what I can do.
Would it be frowned upon on GAF if I simply downloaded RE4? I bought the game disc, after all.

Also, what about Cube games? Any way to start those from HDD?

The option you want is theme. You can either edit your config files with the Configurator described on the Configurable Options page, but it's also one of the ones that gets saved into settings.cfg when you save the global settings (after choosing a theme, find the 'Global Options' menu and select to save).

That's weird. Perhaps try checking the disc to see if there's any patch that looks like it needs cleaning.

Thanks!

Yeah, switch the channel and watch TV while they rip or something. The Wii disc slot LED will flash or something when it is complete (I forget what we programmed there) so you know when it's done and time to switch the discs over.

I personally frown on this as you are supporting the actions of the pirate who put it onto the Internet. Having said that, I don't think it's a bannable offence, but definitely don't ask how to find or post how to find such an infringing copy.

If Dios Mios (mentioned a few posts up) works now, then, yes. I haven't looked into it, though.

This is the first I've heard of Dios Mios / Dios Mios Lite. Using Google I found this guide and it was pretty easy to get set up, considering I already had things set up to play ripped Wii games and had ripped GCN games for messing around with Dolphin.

Since the Homebrew Channel doesn't seem to like the microSD cards in an SD adapter I tried and my old 2 GB SD card is pretty packed I only gave Animal Crossing a test (its compressed form is tiny), but its title screen is now running.

I'll be damned.

I expected you to say that but thought a cheeky little prod wouldn't hurt :).

I'm probably misremembering about the Red Wii then.

I still need to get round to doing this :/. Why are there only 24 hours in a day?! :x

I don't really need Dios Mios any more since most of my GC games work perfectly on Dolphin (except F-Zero :( ), but that's cool that they finally got it working.

I'll be damned too. :O!
A few friends were trying to get/run Dios Mios like a year ago and it was a mess; they just stopped. It involved like having to create some homemade SD Card or something like that.

That guide makes it as if you just need to rip the games, install a wad...and that's it(?). Might have to tell them about it.

Raaah my Sakura Wars PAL I copied on my HDD doesn't launch with WiiFlow (disc error it says), I'll try with another launcher.

On the same note, does anybody here have some freezing issues with Arc Rise Fantasia ? I had one and it's quite frustrating, I don't know if it's because of the HDD or another factor...

I am on 3.2u and am trying to update to 4.3u and keep the homebrew channel.

I just copied Bootmii 0.8 onto my sd card but am not sure if I need to update the Wii to 4.3 first or install Bootmii 0.8 and update the homebrew channel and then update the Wii.

Please advise

Is Dios Mios the only method for GC installation so far? I don't really feel too comfortable doing it after reading the steps. Do you guys think a simpler solution for more technically challenged people like myself will show up down the road?

My GC games are all put away, but I'd imagine I'd play them more often if I had them on my Wii's HDD.

Update the Homebrew Channel first, according to the update instructions on its page in the tutorial, then upgrade the Wii using the official update (which will probably uninstall BootMii, which is unavoidable with the official update), then install the latest Bootmii.

It's Dios Mios Lite, the one without "Lite" is the old one that worked from a USB HDD and had a lot of problems.

It's really easy to use it though: you just get the wad, install it with a wad manager and that's all. You then use DiscEx to extract the iso of your game to a DML compatible format and put the resulting folder in a directory called "games" on the root of your SD card. After that you can use a couple different ways to launch the games. I'd recommend NeoGamma, it's pretty easy to install and use and it works great with DML.

I tried DML on the only Gamecube game I have and it gave me a green blip like it was going to load something, then went black.

I followed the instructions, so I don't understand what I did wrong.

Yep.
Reading around, remember hat:
-Not all games are compatible
-You need a disc inside
-Some recent revisions are not compatible with games that worked in prior ones

Checking around it seems that there's a whole 'No More Memory' app, which lets the Wii use the SD Card as a Memory Card while playing Gamecube games; so no more need for cards. Though still working on fixes as many games have problems with it.

Ok did all of that. Then I installed iOS 248 and 247 according to your tutorial. I am still getting the 249 stub. What do you suggest? I also installed the XML you provided.

If you're getting that message while trying to enter Configurable USB, change the 'meta' text file (SD, apps, USB Loader, meta)

On any machine, open sd:/apps/USBLoader/meta.xml in your favourite text editor and do the following:
1. Find the line </app> towards the end of the file.
2. Depending on which ios you want to use as default (248 is recommended) add one of the lines below before </app>:
<arguments><arg>ios=248</arg></arguments>
<arguments><arg>ios=224-mload</arg></arguments>
3. Save your changes to meta.xml.

EDIT:
Seems you already have that xml(?). Don't know what you meant by "installing it". :p
If anything make sure that the meta file has 248/etc.

I'm sure Clipper will come by and give a better suggestion and actual answer. :p

Thanks! I copied the xml into the wrong folder. Lol.

if i get a wii right now, and homebrew it, would that be possible, or it caannot be done because of the firmware update?

i want to play some EU only games... :(

I just updated CFG to v70_222 (via download within CFG), and now my forwarding channel doesn't work - just get a blank screen, and my Wii remotes desync.

Still works via HBC - and I've had a look through the Tutorial - and have ensured that boot.dol is in the SD/apps/usbloader_cfg/ directory.

Any other ideas? Do I need to re-install the forwarder channel?

Edit: nevermind. CFG c70 added some data into the meta.xml file. Deleted that, and all works fine.

You would only install the 222 versions of Cfg if you wanted it to use IOS222 by default. Are you sure you wanted this, as the tutorial typically assumes you are using the base versions instead.

So, I just installed the HBC. I want to install a region free app that is easy to install but I also want to keep a log. Is that hard to do? Am I asking for too much? Whats the best/easiest app?

What do you mean by a log? You mean whether they store the games in the Wii message board log? In that case, you don't want to use Gecko OS. Probably the easiest method is StartPatch. You can see a brief comparison of the methods on my region free page

Oh, and for those interested, I just added some alternative links for Startpatch 4.3 to the StartPatch page.

Hi Clipper (and anyone else willing/able to help)
I had some free time on my hand today, and decided to finally get off my ass to convert my HDD from WBFS so that I could use it for other purposes, but wbfs_file couldn't detect my WBFS partition, nor could dd. According to CFG, my WBFS partition is type EXTEND with a WBFS filesystem, and it says that's an invalid setup, giving me the option to change the partition type to data. I'm assuming that's what causing the trouble, but I just wanted to make sure if it's safe to use CFG to change the partition type without it deleting all my games?
Also, while I was googling about the issue, I came across this tutorial, and I thought it seemed more straightforward than the one on the GAf wiki. Do you know anything about wbfs2fat/in-place conversion, and if so, do you think it's safe to use, or do you still consider the method from the wiki the best way to convert a drive from WBFS?

I haven't looked for other techniques, so it might be safer, especially if it detects your drive. I really don't know if the conversion from extend will work or not, to be honest.

ZOMG new version of HBC!

Nice catch! Doesn't seem like there's anything changed with the installation, so I'll get round to fixing up the numbers for the downloads and so on in the tutorial soon.

Also, it seems that they fixed the bug which plagued my IOS236 installer for many months. Another guy already found a workaround that avoids the issue, but now the previous versions of my app should work properly too, if I'm reading the HBC update notes correctly.

And to anybody worried about this, there is no reason that you need to update if your current setup works as the changes are cosmetic. Also no reason not to update if you have the time to do so.

I was checking the Nintendo Channel yesterday to find out how long I'd played several games. I noticed that Kirby's Return to Dreamland didn't show up at all on my list of played games, but it does show up in my playlog. I played about half of the game off the disc, then played the other half using Config.

Would playing games through Config have any effect on the stats in Nintendo Channel? Another game that I've played exclusively through Config (Bit.Trip Complete) showed my time played just fine in Nintendo Channel.

Did you perhaps import the game? I'm fairly sure that only games from your region will show up in the Nintendo Channel. I can't think of any other reason for its absence.

So I take it you can mod even the new wii if they are with a 4.3e firmware ? (You know the ones without the gamecube retrocompatibility)
Yes.

Question, if I need to get my Wii repaired is it easy to get the channel uninstalled?
Only if your Wii dies in a way that still gives you access to the Wii Menu, such as if the disc drive failed.

So, if my disk drive didn't fail? It would be hard to uninstall?
