GAF Wii Homebrew thread: Homebrew, emulators, USB disc installs! Easy tutorial!

The reasoning behind it is interesting if slightly unintentional form of cost-cutting. Basically the newer Wii Remote Plus (RVL-CNT-01-TR; older ones are sans TR) don't work with homebrew (I think this goes beyond Wii to like Dolphin, GlovePIE etc).
HBC 1.0.8 was released 18 months ago, and we’re at over 3.1 million unique installs – that’s 3.4% of all Wiis sold to date, and this is only counting on-line HBC installs!
I wonder how many people are still on even older versions.

Got my 250GB external HDD! What's the best format to use? I know Stump and I were arguing about it a while ago but I forget what we decided on. :P

Well, you've basically got three options:
WBFS - ??? Invented by Spanish guy? Tastes like chicken? Disadvantages: Not going to be mountable to any other device.
FAT - Widest OS compatibility, 4GB file limit so dual layer games will be split into multiple files. Will work on Windows/OSX/*nix
NTFS - Write compatibility outside Windows is experimental, including on Wii.

Unless you're planning on also using to hard drive for other media, I'd go with FAT. NTFS is the better file system for general use stuff in an exclusively Windows environment. For Wii stuff, I'm using FAT32.

I agree with that but if someone plans to also use Dolphin then having it in NTFS and ripping directly into ISOs to use in Dolphin is nice.

I also use FAT32 but just because I'm too lazy to change it over. I also like using it instead of an SD card to store my HB apps.

There's really no reason at all to use WBFS.

Coolio, that's what I'll do then. Anyone know some good reformatting tool?

For NTFS, just use Windows. For FAT32, there is a nice app linked to on the Cfg page of the tutorial for formatting (in the section where I compare the different format types). There's also EaseUs or GParted for free partitioning tools if you want to split it up somehow.

Waaaaaiit, I seriously have to choose between using my USB keyboard or playing games from the hard drive?

Waaaaaiit, I seriously have to choose between using my USB keyboard or playing games from the hard drive?

Nope. Just plug it into the other USB port.
For the internet browser, just use it normally.
For games that use it, change those games to use IOS 247. Though in some games, 248 works fine for USB keyboards/headsets.

How do I make a specific game use a specific IOS?
-Select the game
-Then Options
-Go to IOS (click left or right to chose the one you want)
-Select Save (so that you don't need to change it every time)

It's specifically saved for that game, so don't worry about it changing other things. If the game doesn't work after the change, or you notice problems, just change it back.

Ah, thanks. You mean select it in USB Loader?

I guess I will have to convert them. Thanks.
Will google the name of the program later.

PS the program I use is called WBFS_file_2.9. It isn't easy to find in google if you don't know the name already. It's nice and easy to use, just drag + drop your .wbfs file onto the executable and you're done.

The WBFS managers will also allow you to convert between .wbfs and .iso.

And just for completeness, you can use either Cfg or CleanRip to rip games directly to .iso files. I have the information about the options to add to config.txt to do this with Cfg within the tutorial page.

Edit: Just noting that I only just added it to that page. I thought I had added it ages ago, but I guess not.

What's the differences between wbfs and iso?
ISO is the image of the ripped game/disc. Is what you use to later burn a copy to a disc.
WBFS from what I remember was one of the first (if not the first) formats that could be used on USB Loaders. It wasn't until some years ago that there was compatibility with FAT32 and NTFS.

If anything, the difference if is on the size. ISOs are going to be usually the size of the disc. So, 4.2 or so GB; while WBFS only contains the game-data. Games like New Super Mario Bros. for example, can take like 500MB in that format, while the ISO of the same game takes 4+GB.

Or something like that. :p

Hey guys, I'm thinking of purchasing The Last Story PAL from PlayAsia.com but does the game play and work fine on ConfigUSB loader? Has anyone tried?

I don't mind just running the disc if playing from the HDD is funky.

The .wbfs info was a little flawed. Here's the full deal.

WBFS is a format type that used to be the only way to support playing Wii games from the hard drive. It removed all the junk data from the disc data, only storing the game. When FAT32 support was added, the .wbfs file format was created to allow you to have games that were still shrunk with the junk data removed. The .iso is a complete, uncompressed disc image, so the junk data is intact and it takes up a lot of space. You can avoid the extra space usage if your NTFS drive is formatted as 'sparse', but that's if you know what yu are doing.

Thus, you now have a choice between WBFS (which is outdated), FAT32 and NTFS drive formats. You also have a choice between .wbfs and .iso file formats. If you only want to play on the Wii, use .wbfs files on FAT32 or NTFS. If you want to use the same drive for both the Wii and Dolphin, use .iso files on NTFS (they are too large to fit on FAT32).

If you don't have a mac or linux machine you might as well just use NTFS though usually FAT 32 handles the split files just fine.

I think this has been brought up before but is there an easy line of code to change the default music in CFG? Even off would be preferrable to the racket that thing puts out!

Awesome, thanks for the info Clipper.

By default, it plays all files in the base directory. You can change it to a particular file or a different directory with the music option in config.txt (e.g., music=0 would be off, music=usb:/path to set a path). You can also just delete the .mp3 file that comes in the base directory or put your own files in there for it to play instead. It can play .mod and .mp3 files.

Finally getting around to ripping our expansive Gamecube library onto the same harddrive as the Wii. Maybe I'll finally play Wario World after all these years.

I'm itching to do the same but I'm waiting for the GC program to evolve to more then just SD card support. Even if I got a 32GB card it wouldn't be enough for all my games.

I haven't been able to get it running from HDD. I've seen it working on youtube and had the same setup as him, but still nothing.

I wanna play Disaster. :(

thehut.com has it in stock for 9 euros, if you don't mind the fact that they're affiliated with Zavvi which is a scam company that will most likely steal your money when you order something from them and never ship it to you. (Actually I did order successfully from thehut a couple of times, but when I ordered Xenoblade from Zavvi it did not end well.)

where's the best brick and mortar store to get a cheapish external hard drive? I'm too impatient to wait to get one from an online retailer -_-

I already bought it. I just can't figure out how to install startpatch.

On a PC/emulator I guess. On the Wii, it's only through SD Card.

At the moment they say it's impossible, even the FAQ says that there won't be USB support for Dios Mios Lite since it's a "thing" with the Wii per se and not them not been able to.

I have a big problem and hopefully you guys can help me out.

my usb loader gx crashes everytime I try to download a cover or download ocarina codes. it gives me the same error code: exception (dsi) occured. I tried to update the loader but it just crahed again.
I tried google but I have absolutely no idea what to do. does anyone else have these problems?

You need to download the IOS236 app regardless. You don't need to download the separate IOSes with NUS Downloader if the Wii is connected, though.

It says it would be best to download boot Mii before downloading this. For that do I have to use a brand new HDD?

Edit: Screw this. I'm just going with gecko os.

Boot Mii is just a safeguard. It has nothing to do with USB, HDDs, but just creates a copy of the NAND (internal memory/etc.) of your Wii; so in case of problems, you can restore from that. You have the option to install it and while it is recommended is not mandatory.
That is recommended before installing anything to the Wii.

You could just follow the guide while not installing Boot Mii; just install 236, then the rest and you'll be done.

Basically, you just need to follow the steps in the guide to:
1. Install the Homebrew Channel
2. Install IOS236
3. Install d2x
4. Install Configurable USB Loader (if you want to run the game from the HDD)

All can be done either online (directly from your Wii) or offline (by downloading whatever each step tells you to).

Edit: Fixed.

If I install gecko os do I have to use that app to play retail games from now on? Also, can I play games I have downloaded?

If by "downloaded games" you mean WiiWare/Virtual Console, then yep you can play them. :p

Regarding Gecko OS (as far as I know), you can play regular games through the regular Disc Channel, and only use Gecko whenever you want to play an imported disc. No need to use it for every game.

Though I wasn't a big fan of Gecko. Haven't checked recently, but back then (2 years ago) it was pretty basic on terms of look, etc. I preferred Configurable USB, because I could see the covers, boxarts and everything looked pretty. :p

So... I ripped some Wii games (CleanRip), now I have some big honkin' ISOs. (for instance, Xenoblade seems to be about 7.9 GB) Will they work with the USB loader like this, or what?

Also, what about Dolphin? Will it play these? What about opening the ISO up and seeing the undoubtedly fascinating mysteries within? Is there a guide for any of this stuff?

(I realize at this point it's annoyingly close to a "piracy guide", so I'll understand if the answer is no)

Hi, guys. Been awhile.

Question: Just ripped The Last Story onto my external harddrive. It would not, however, let me download the covers. I kept getting an error message. Is this a known issue and is there any way around it?
If you're using Cfg, make sure the connection is working for other things too.
If anything, GameTDB is the site were it (by default) downloads the covers.
Here are The Last Story's covers.

If you can't connect still, just make sure put the respective cover on SD/usb-loader/covers in your computer.

****
If it's forbidden or something to talk about GameTDB in here, let me know to edit this post. XD

I'll try and check connection.

So you're saying if that doesn't work, just save image from your link to the folder on my harddrive?

Thanks.

Yeah, well..SD, unless you have Cfg/Homebrew/etc. directly on the HDD.
If that's the case just put the respective cover on the respective folder (Full/HQ cover in 'Full', 3D cover in '3D', etc.). Leave the name of the images "as is"; since the name is the ID of the game and that's what it used to locate it.

Never experimented with HDDs running it, so don't know if the directories are similar :p ..but here should be a few folders were the covers, discs, etc. are stored.

Dumb question.

I installed d2x on IOS248. It is fine.

I downloaded the fixed meta.xml file for CFG USB Loader. I opened it and ensure it has the argument ios=248 line. However when I run CFG USB Loader it still try to load it from IOS 249. What did I do wrong?

I put the meta.xml in the sd:/apps/USBLoader/, which overwrite the existing one.

Yes I did. I overwrote the original file (which didn't have the argument ios=248 line).
