They're really hitting it home with Yukki's current portrayal.

Also surprised they got through 4 and a half chapters without losing anything important. Though I do wish they kept
11th giving 8th his jacket in since it gave us a better idea of his personality beyond the insanity.
I'm not really worried anymore that they'll have to rush it so much. They can keep a stable 3 chapters per episode from here on out.

More like one of the greatest names ever. When he said it, I had to rewind it and make sure I read it correctly. Just amazing, hahahhaa!

Boku wa Whatever 1 - 12

I tried to watch this when it was on air, but couldn't stand the art (and other aspects of the show). I still can't stand the art (and other aspects of the show), but still managed to finish it now, and there actually were some pretty funny jokes here and there. And the conclusion was kinda clever - at least on paper. Simply retelling the first episode from a different perspective could have worked. If the story was better, and the characters were more likable, and if the director and the editor were a little (a lot) more competent. Still, I've seen worse.
 
[Hellsing IX]

I’d like to talk, for a moment, about how Hellsing Ultimate IX is paced. Rather than looking at the work as a whole I’m just going to breakdown one particular sequence so that you can have an understanding of where my critique is coming from.

In this action scene Hellsing rushes forward and as he’s charging forward he pushes his way through some obstacles and finally strikes his foe in the heart. This exact action scene is very common in anime and it’s been portrayed countless times. Usually the hero dashing forward has to dash past/over/through tendrils of some sort that are emanating from the central opponent.

In most shows this scene might take 10 – 15 seconds from start to finish. Thanks to the editing and pacing in this episode it actually managed to take 80 tedious seconds. How did they achieve such a feat? I’ll show you.

This first shot has Helling running. The camera is pretty much static. 4 seconds.

The next shot his opponent (SPOILER). 2 seconds.

Then we cut back to close up of Hellsing as he pushes his way through the ‘tendrils’ – 3 seconds. (Note, as the camera is in close-up in front of his face we never good a sense of how many tendrils are in front of him or how far he is from the target. Actually establishing all these things in the geography of the show would take more time and animation then they apparently had to spare, so they opt for this close-range shot that doesn’t give you any information about what the scene looks like from a distance).

We cut to Integra – note we cut to a close up of her face so we don’t actually get to see what the scene looks like from her eyes. 1 second.

The next shot is of Hellsing leaping towards his opponent (SPOILER). As we’ve just been looking directly into Integra’s eyes this is presumably a representation of what she’s seeing. However it’s clearly just a stylised representation of what’s going on – the angles, sizes and all the details are highly exaggerated. Once again they’ve managed to avoid animating what this action scene looks like from the outside. This is very nearly a still, the tendrils and figures animate on a very short up-and-down look for 7 glorious seconds.

Even though Hellsing is in mid-leap the show decides its time for us to reflect on the nature of immortality. So we slowly zoom in on her still face for 9 seconds whole seconds.

As any momentum that might have been achieve by the pacing is now lost the show considers that it’s a good time for a flashback. After all, Hellsing is still hanging in the air waiting to hit his target. No rush. This flashback plays out in a series of 3 stills over 15 pointlessly wasted seconds.

It’s okay, no need to worry. Hellsing will actually hit his target in another 34 seconds. It’s just taking him a while to move through the air – it seems to be thick as treacle.
As you can see there’s a few shots of Hellsing pushing forward towards his opponent here.

I really like this shot, because it helps to remind the audience that Hellsing is still in the air, just in case you thought he might have landed already. This still shot is held for 8 awkward seconds.

We’re nearly there. He’s nearly hit him! However, it’s essential that we understanding he’s holding his hand out in front of him, so we’re treated to this still image that the camera slowly pans up on for 9 tiresome seconds.

Finally, Hellsing has pushed through the last of the obstacles to connect with his opponent! (SPOILER). One minute and twenty seconds after he jumped into the air he’s finally arrived at this destination and this action scene is concluded.

Now, while it is true that an action sequence can gain a bit of tension by having one part of it take an exaggerated amount of time to follow-through this is clearly taking it to a seriously ludicrous extreme. The way it’s arranged makes it pretty clear they’ve just lifted the EXACT storyboards from the manga. Not even very much of the manga – it’s a whole five pages to be exact. Five pages which has been masterfully stretched to fill over a minute of run time in this episode. Subsequently, the pacing for this whole sequence is terrible and boring.

I would assume it'd depend on the case in question, but the original material would probably be the core. The more reboots, remakes, what have you, you add on the more complex it gets, but there's got to be something that's the original canon at least, even if later they diverge from it. I was asking why should I accept continuity for something I have no intentions of reading or haven't read for that matter. American comic books are a great example of this.

Sometimes, when you're trying to argue for a specific conclusion or development in a certain work, you are compelled to cite the source material as evidence to that flimsy conclusion when the adapted work in question is inconclusive, and you have a refusal to separate the two for the sake of argument.

So yes, looking at each one individually is reasonable, but I do think that they are connected, to some degree or another.

This is why I despise this thinking, and it's compounded by how you aren't able to separate two works in two different mediums separately when we're talking about a specific work while also forgetting the continuity is optional in the case of anime and its respective original source.

In the case of anime based on mangas, most of the time adaptations are a lot like the original, which changes here and there. Sometimes you see something more significantly changed, or you get added content, but more often than not they do try to mostly stick to the original story... but it's not the original source, so it's probably not on the top level of canon. The original manga would be that. However of course, that says nothing about personal preferences. There are many chances where people are going to like derivative works over originals, and often for good reason, certainly! I was only looking at issues of canon and versions here, not about which ones are better. Certainly there are, for instance, plenty of cases of animes which improve on the mangas they are based on -- changing things from the original that didn't quite work, adding details, etc.

They will always be two different experiences simply because of the mediums they adhere to are different experiences.

I know I mentioned it in the previous quirp, but Yu really has become a surprisingly interesting character as the show has progressed. I see what you meant, thoraxes.

I never understood why the games (ie P1P and P3P) didnt have a voiced protagonist it always felt odd, however to a certain extent it felt kind of immersive to make him silent and make the game more personable as if we ourselves were in it.

Yeah, that's the gist of the argument for silent protags, but I find the whole thing to be archaic & lazy, really.

I like how even far in the future, any kind of virtual reality game still has crappy 32/64-bit era CG.

It really feels like the buildup won't be sufficient for the finale. This doesn't feel like a final arc at all even if it does have cool stuff like Vicious being Vicious.

Wow, wtf? Aside from the awkward cut to it, the new segment with
everybody going their separate ways hit hard.
I can relate to to the sense of isolation/distance that comes with jumping schools/ being there for only a planned stint. I FEEL FOR YOU YU.

One thing I've noticed about the fights in this, they aren't animated spectacularly at all, but the sense of tension/energy is there legit. Like, you can really feel that shit's going down. really cool. That fight against

made me want to toss my triple in the fucking trash can at the time, but it was all worth it to see it done like this in the end. Yu stays persona spamming.

Had to pause that shit. SIGNS OF LOVE HAS PLAYED. I REPEAT, SIGNS OF LOVE HAS PLAYED. The scenes at home just weren't feeling right without it.

That was a lot of fun. To see Yu, spending his every waking minute with the Slinks from Nanako's perspective was genius, and really took advantage of the fact that this show is fanservice to the hilt. Just fill in the blanks.
 
The knight in the area 8

This episode was surprisingly ugly. Not that I expect much from this, but it looked worse than the previous ones, which already didn't look too hot.
Seven not wanting to talk about her playing soccer in America felt stupid, then they came out with that awkward nickname and I laughed.

These 2 parters of nothingness provide mild entertainment and a lot of boredom.
