The Player 1 Podcast Topic

Non-Americans are so adorably offended by even the tiniest bit of American patriotism. It's so damn cute.

How is this only Assassin's Creed 3? Didn't at least three asscreed games get released last year? Obviously the iOS game is a spin-off but man, it seems like there is a new one every six months. I think the games are pretty awful, but I will definitely pick up this one. American Revolution setting could be pretty fantastic. I just hope I get to slit the throat of Benedict Arnold.

Loved da shoutout at the end. XD
I figured you would appreciate that.

Vita update: After tossing a few things up on eBay (more stuff will be going up soon!), I'm getting closer and closer to being able to afford one. Hopefully in the upcoming weeks we'll be able to have ample Dynasty Warriors Next talk!

Psh, the stuff is up on ebay, you basically already have the money. Go get one today. Pick up MLB tomorrow! (Yes Phil, it's the one with kicking touchdowns)

aw snap. btw, i heard DW Next is actually good even with the touch controls. NOW!

So just get on your friends list then play in the tournament listed? I think I can do that.

Damn "+2 stroke penalty for power shots" thing got me today on the first tourney. I didn't notice it until I holed out from 125 and only got a par. The Vita almost died.

My sleeping Vita is in the middle of a Dynasty Warriors battle and I KNOW my kid is going to come home from school today and play some Mutant Blobs, killing my DW game :(

See Phil, this is what you have to look forward too. Better throw more stuff on ebay and get a second Vita, just in case

That's the long/short of it. Next tourney starts tomorrow.

Why's that?

Well, it's a significant step back from DW7. I know I shouldn't compare console and handheld but... The other offerings on the Vita I feel are up to par with the home console counterparts.

This one lost the weapon system, stat leveling, and the online mode.
It also lost the hex grid conquest mode thing I really loved. I liked unlocking the map one hex at a time - getting into "boss battles" (the fights against multiple officers) or finding "towns" where you can talk to the actual characters and shops and everything.

In DW:Next, you're back to one weapon per character, no stat leveling, and the only online is that you might see a custom character in the conquest mode.
The conquest mode in this game is pretty much just the story mode without the story. It's like a Risk-esque thing where you're attacking and taking weaker territories. And instead of the little towns with NPCs, we have a random guy between battles appearing and being like "This is a great item. Would you like to buy it?". But it never tells you what the item is, so 90% of the time, you'll end up buying something that's worse than what you already have, so it just discards it.

You get a lot of weapon/item drops, but most of the time it's worse than what you already have so it just gets discarded. You can't customize the weapons anymore - the stat bonuses are just random on the drop.

It's just... every time I play it, I wish I was playing DW7 instead. I don't feel that way about any of the other games.

But the absolute worst part of this game is the touch/motion mechanics. In the story mode, you'll often get mini games that are completely crappy. It's stuff like:
- Tilt your Vita to steer your horse through a race course thing
- Tilt your Vita as a turret to shoot tigers or troops attacking something
- Swipe at guys sliding at you (with no animation) to kill them before they reach you
- Calligraphy

But even that is forgivable. I could just finish the story mode and then play in conquest for some DW goodness. But nope. They take that away from me too.

In any battle, you will be interrupted (while running around or even mid combo) by multiple mini games.
- Projectiles fly towards your screen and you have to swipe at them before they hit you
- Enemies jump at you in slow motion and you have to tilt the Vita and tap all of them before time runs out
- Duels

The duels are really bad. Sometimes when you run into an enemy officer, it goes into duel mode. The camera pulls over your shoulder and it's just you and the officer. In the duel, the enemy will either block, do a strong attack, or swipe at you.
If they block, you have to do a strong attack to break it so you get a few seconds of swiping at your screen.
If they do a strong attack, you have to do a normal attack to interrupt them.
If they swipe at you, a prompt will appear and you have to swipe in that direction to counter it.

When you get their health down low enough, you spam your screen with swipes to finish them off.

Every single duel is like that. It never changes. It never gets harder or more complicated. It's just... that. Every single battle.

So basically, it's a very watered down version of DW with really bad touch/motion controls put in that completely break the flow of the action with terrible mini games.

Not only do I wish I was playing DW7 when the game isn't throwing bad mini games at me, but whenever I do hit one of these stupid mini games, I feel like throwing my Vita against the wall.

I went in with kind of high expectations I guess. Especially when I was hearing that it was good from people who normally ridicule the series. But it just didn't work for me at all.

I dislike this game.

My monday morning routine is all kinds of messed up today with the late episode!

Normally, first I get depressed its Monday morning and I shower.
Then I download Player One and get happy. You see the problem here? I'm still depressed!

::sigh:: time to turn to Garfield in my time of need. He knows how mondays work

You could be watching the latest episode of Generation 16 while you wait!

Just wanted to leave a quick comment and say that I really appreciate the effort you put into these videos. There's a lot of videos out there focused on being vitriolic about that era of games and as a fellow Classic Sega fan, hearing you talk about the era brings back a lot of good memories, and I've learned a lot too.

Looking forward to the new episode of the PoP!

Thanks! I'm chugging along on Episode 4, which should be ready in a couple weeks.

Nice episode, listened on my commute today.

Bummer about Mass Effect 3 on the PS3. I just finished Mass Effect 2 and all of its DLC yesterday, and I already bought $60 of PSN cards to get it. I guess I'll play the demo and Playstation Plus trial today and if it's really bad I'll just rent it.

Good ep. Glad that I listened to it via the stream.

It is always surprising how much it gets edited out.

I'm Glad that I was able to listen to Phil do ME3 lines of dialogue in his Sarcastic Obi-Wan voice :P That was priceless. Too bad that many people missed that.

Check this out--my hotel was really nice, but the wifi was not free. In fact, it was $10, per day, per device. Fucking madness.

Holy shit. You need a hotspot friend, they are the best. $15 a month for internet in my pocket. (Though, the house we rented had free wifi, which was nice)

Also, next episode one of you needs to bitch about the friends list limit. 100 people across two platforms is insanely limiting, especially when most of the multiplayer hooks on a mobile device will be leaderboard chases.

If I'm not sure what hotel I'm going to be at sometimes I bring one of those Airport Express thingies, throw in my own wifi access point into the room and then it just counts as 1 device. :)

Also, a reason I'm glad I went with the 3G model so I don't have to worry about that kind of thing.

I have the 3G model, but I've avoided activating it to this point.

Couldn't agree more. My friends list on both systems has been full for years.

I still find that this is a problem that affects such a small part of the user base.

It would be nice if they expand on it, but wouldn't my breath.

I had no idea I was even marginally close to the PSN friends limit until I got a few messages saying people were adding me. I play just about zero multiplayer games on PS3. The only one I do is The Show. I can't imagine how people that actually play crap like Killzone, Resistance and UC multi have any room left at all.

Now you add a Vita to the mix, which is basing the enjoyability of its multiplayer on scoreboard chasing (which is a better experience the more friends you have) and it's a clusterfuck.

Is the theme song for this podcast an original song or is taken from something? If so, what is it taken from?

It was on one of my Metal Gear soundtracks - I think it's from the MSX sequel though. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEtN4GizqEs

Re: Friends lists - I feel like this is a problem for a small group of users and the vast majority go nowhere near filling their lists. And whenever I've run into it it's mostly because I want to add a bunch of people to play a particular game that my other friends aren't playing. If there were some way to have a game-specific list of people who weren't your network-wide friends but you could still be temp friends with in a particular game I'd be all for it. I don't feel like increasing the # of people you can have on your friends list overall would solve the problem - if it were increased to 200, you'd still run into that.

In Near they have this idea of your "game compatibility" with someone you've "Near'd" with. It's a great idea that needs to be taken further to start suggesting friends to play particular games with. I know it's horribly wretched social networking B.S. but if Near is meant to introduce you to people you should be playing with then it should a) point it out more at the OS level, b) pick a game you're already both playing and encourage a match-up, and c) let you play with that person without adding them to your permanent friends list (at least at first).

If I get a random friend request from someone I don't know chances are I ain't gonna accept it. But if I knew "hey, this is from Near, and it's someone who's got the same taste in games as I do, how about a round of Hot Shots?" then that might change. Know what I mean?

Near hasn't worked for me ever. When I first bought it, it thought I was in Brighton, MA when I was at home in IN. Now, I just get an error when I try to load it.

Fuck near, give me more friends. It took me what, 5 years to get to 100 friends? I can live with space for another 5 years. Know how many friends I have on Steam? Me either, because it doesn't give a shit.

Holy shit, someone on a podcast mentioned MLB 12! I think I have the vapors.

Agree 100% on the game showing that the Vita is an amazingly capable sports game machine. Especially for modes like RTTS and franchise. Being able to make progress on the console and transfer that to the handheld and vice versa is freaking awesome.

Mike, I think most of the complaints are from a visual standpoint. This isn't the massive visual leap that most people expected going from the PSP to the Vita. I'm hoping that's a result of the dev cycle and that next year they'll really....uh....knock it out of the park.

It still looks really damn good to me, though. Obviously the little interstitial sequences, like walking up to the plate, etc. are pretty rough. But pretty much every playable position looks great--especially in motion, with those sweet, sweet animations--on that little screen.

They added more graphics (crowds, umpires, etc) but didn't make the significant improvements I kind of expected. I never had a problem with the animations really.

The best part of your buyout discussion (which was great, by the way, nice to have someone willing to call out the garbage) is that the GiantBomb guys essentially agree 100% with "nothing will change is a bullshit mantra."

http://soundcloud.com/ventilaator-1/bombcast

I give it a year to 16 months before a total merge. GameSpot bought the people, not the website.

Giant Bomb had to make changes even before the buyout. They nearly split the Bombcast into two because the geniuses at Whiskey Media thought it was a better idea to create a web site about an internet movie database than to properly capitalize on their one successful product, which did not even have ads for years. And the few ads they did get were also very poorly done.

It's not like they're going from independent non-profit organization to the big evil corporation, the goal has always been to make money. I honestly expect Giant Bomb to be more successful under CBS.

I also think the 1UP comparison is valid in some ways, but 1UP was way too fat. They were bigger than Gamespot even, let alone Giant Bomb.

I just think that the before too long, they'll be regular GameSpot employees. All the tech stuff they do is redundant and GB never really caught on as the internet's video games go to wiki so all they have is the personalities. I guess maybe they will make giant bomb the "adult" section of GameSpot but then they'd have to hire actual adults.
