Not even comparable, and I can't believe how much people still lament that stuff being brought up here. How could it spoil the anime when the story never even gets that far and it has no bearing or impact on the anime? Another on the other hand is built on top of the mystery it constantly dangles over your head.

They're both the same in the way that they can ruin the enjoyment of the anime.

Hey, Instro, you should remove Pdot's spoilers from your quote back there, even if they're tagged. I misclicked it and catched a glimpse of a few words before realizing what I was doing, haha.

There's no point in arguing.

You're one of those dudes who actively seek spoilers. It holds little weight coming from you :p

Hrm. So even non-Ghibli movies can make money in theatres?

Hosoda movies make money and is semi-mainstream.

I want to say Shinkai too but I read a review of Children Who Chase Blah Blah one time and the reviewer seemed thoroughly creeped out by how anime it was and how everyone else in the theater was basically otaku.

You can probably still legit make money off of hardcore anime properties. They just need to have even just a little bit of mainstream appeal and be marketed properly.

As usual, the DVD & CD rankings for Feb. 27 - Mar. 4:

Fate/zero is finally here next week. What are the expectations?

Single CD

Hibiki has some fans, nice. Full version and instrumental of Harukaze is nice, but knowing its the last op gets me sad everytime I listen to it.

I need to check out the Enjoy full version, its kind of catchy.

Kind of glad I went to sleep and missed that Another spoilr.

Idolmaster Vol.5 LE Blu-ray - 8,362
Idolmaster Vol.5 LE DVD - 2,527

Aniplex and Bandai Namco laughing their way to the bank. Their new business plan of selling anime in game stores instead of just video retailers is really, really paying off. It's pretty impressive.

Considering that games these days sell much better on average than anime, I'm surprised it took someone this long to try that.

Happy to see Ro-Kyu-Bu! held steady for all six volumes without dropping.

Gonna send in the coupon set for the live concert DVD bonus for buying all six. I'm not much into the whole VA idol thing, but eh seems a waste not to get it.

This show has the best reaction faces ever.

The opening and panties segments were amazing, especially the latter.
"How are you going to get panties in here?" "I'll make the call." Motoharu's dignity in shambles afterwards too...

Also, nice Andy Warhol-esque endcard.

This episode is great! They literally actually went for faceless gag for the beginning. Panties skit is great, hell the student council skits are great due to the president being a pointless appearance.

Poor girl, she got bad luck in Ano natsu and now she being cousin zoned.... all in one day! I can see Ishihara Kaori(Madoka,Kanna) and Katsuyuki Konishi join in the cast.

These days? I don't think anime has ever sold better than videogames.

Poorly worded, my apologies. I meant that despite game sales being really really low these days on average they still usually manage to well outsell anime, so I am surprised it's taken so long for someone to latch onto the idea. If that makes sense.

That was apparently Kaori Mizuhashi, hence the "tiro finale" joke from Sugita Hidenori.
On a related note, I finally figured out how to identify the cast listing during anime ending credits.

Dammit,I thought she sounded like her. I guess I didn't pick up her usual tones.

Kanna is a goddess. A selfless, self-destructive goddess :(

I don't mind that Kaito got with Ichika, but that ending was a bit too melodramatic for my tastes. ALSO, KANNA BETTER GET A GOOD END.

So, the K-On Movie has broken 1.7 billion yen beating Summer Wars who had 1.65 billion.

In the last 5 years, K-On only trails Ghibli movies, Pokemon, Doraemon, Conan, One Piece, Eva and Inazuma for anime series. As individual movies, K-On is only behind the last 3 Ghibli movies in the box office.

Seems wrong. Evangelion 2.0 made 4 billion yen in the box office. 1.0 made 2 billion yen in the box office. I think he's talking about non-franchise films vs franchise films.

Hm. Makes sense the Eva movies would be up there too. Either way, very happy to see K-On perform so well after Nichibomba.

Maybe I'm laughing at all the bitter tears in this thread?

I mean, when was the last time a childhood friend ever won out against the magical girlfriend falling from the sky? The odds must be astronomical.

Exactly, and that's why it's bad! The guy just got a hard on for some older ( or older looking since we don't know her real age ) chick with big boobs at first sight.

He only did what every reasonable young man in that situation would do.

Ichika fucking rocks. I don't deny the charm of short-haired Kanna, but Ichika's just too good.

Man, they got me on the

Stop reminding me.

Ichika is super perfect softspoken alien waifu with no distinguishing characteristics whatsoever. Yawwwwwn.

Not like the other non-Kaito characters are much better in that regard, I just can't care about Ichika in particular at all.

Tatami Galaxy OF THE END

TD66D.jpg

Of course, the last thing this show would want to do is waste my time.

That was better than I had hoped.

The first half of the episode was an explication of the stuff they'd already started to explore at the end of the last episode, which was itself an explication of the entire damn series. Almost like a flashback flashing back to something that happened just before. But once our protagonist realized the obvious solution and escaped, I really liked how they resolved it. It was appropriately melodramatic, and a really smart way to bring things full circle to the events of the first episode. And then it reached an ending that could tie up all the threads from every other episode, which was a nice feeling.

It's kind of amusing to see the protagonist's relationship with Ozu reverse itself in the end, but it definitely complicated my conception of that character. That final sprint towards Ozu almost reminded me of that KH2 Riku reunion, the way he ignored Akashi to rescue his fated buddy. But it's not exactly an unexpected turn. Ozu's actions wouldn't have led to bad outcomes for the protagonist, if he had been willing to take some initiative on his own.

All in all, I still very much liked this series as a whole. It's unusual, and I have a lot of respect for it for taking a difficult premise and making it work very well. While I might lament that the ending didn't respect my intelligence as much as it could have, that only disappoints as much as it does because of how much the series does respect the viewer's intelligence until that point.

Structurally, I've never seen anything like it, and it's very effective artistically. I'm glad I picked it up and watched it.

Hmm you're probably right. I was also sure that any Pokemon movie made more money than K-On so I thought it was weird.

Btw, on the subject of Evangelion, 3.0 will have a new cinema distributor. Khara is partnering with T-Joy instead of Klockworks this time. It is expected to have a much wider release compared to the previous films.

The last time I discussed this with 7th, I brought up the point that 1.0 made 2 billion yen on an extremely limited theatrical release, while 2.0 managed to double that with a wider release, but there were still sell outs in all major cities. It will definitely be interesting to see what the actual ceiling is for Eva's box office takings if the release is wide enough to fully meet demand.

Also interesting is the box office results for Ghibli films from the last decade. For the record, Spirited Away remains the highest grossing movie of all time in Japan, so that's Ghibli's peak.

Spirited Away (2001) - 30.4 billion yen
Cat Returns (2002) - 6.46 billion yen
Howl's (2004) - 19.6 billion yen
Earthsea (2006) - 7.65 billion yen
Ponyo (2008) - 15.5 billion yen
Arrietty (2010) - 9.25 billion yen
Poppy Hill (2011) - 4.46 billion yen

How many of these movies can Evangelion 3.0 outgross? 2.0 and Poppy Hill are already extremely close... :)

The original release of the original TV anime adaptation of Gunslinger Girl was actually bundled with a series of PS2 games - the only way to get the show was to buy the games. Funny thing is that it ended up being cheaper than a normal R2 release would be (only three volumes!), plus you got a bunch of PS2 games (not particularly great ones, but I got my play from them) and some better-than-average first-pressing extras.

I'm enjoying this show way too much for what it actually deserves. The comedy is bad, the animation is stiff, the music is ear-grating, but goddamn if Nana isn't cute (dat fanservice).
