accidentally spilled some stout on my GF's laptop keyboard. She won't be here for another 48+hrs, how can I fix the stickiness?

Warm water with a tiny bit of dish soap mixed in a spray bottle. Real light mist sprays and then rub a Q-tip between the keys. Get a can of compressed air to help dry it.

Does anyone know any free software I can use to create simple invoices? I was using Express Invoice but my free trial expired and I don't really feel like spending $80 to create like one invoice a month.

I think Word and/or Excel would have invoice templates. If you're doing one a month, you probably don't need anything fancier.

If it's a Macbook you might want to pull the keyboard and check it didn't get onto the mobo - cleaning it off now could save a lot of grief down the line. A tiny (and corrosive) droplet of coffee toasted my old Macbook, slowly over a period of months :(

Hey does anyone know what this symbol is? A friend of mine brought this back for me from China, and I was driving downtown back when the Dalai Lama was in the city, and I saw one of the Buddhist monks with this symbol on his satchel.

Assuming you have a multi touch track pad you need to click on the desktop and then do a 'pinch' movement on the track pad (two fingers on the track pad, far apart. Then bring one, or both, closer together)

Ha thanks. I was looking all around the Personalise settings, completely forgot about View, sorted now

Feel free to post as many facepalm pictures as you wish :D

Really off the wall question here. So I had this crazy dream that I think stemmed from some gif I've seen. I'm not sure if I have manufactured all of this or if this gif really exists. So, with that out of the way, I'll describe said gif the best I can.

It's like a creepy robotic Darth Vader looking thing with gears and stuff all rotating around and it's emerging from something that looks like a junkyard. Maybe it's Darth Vader, or maybe it's just a black robot (again, my dream could be conflicting with reality here). Any help would be awesome.

There's a method used in architecture that used to break up the monotony of a texture on an object. It'd called something like grimble and gumbles or something like that. An example would be the little imperfections that pepper the surface of the Death Star or Star Destroyer.

Can someone help me remember the name of this method?

EDIT: Nevermind, I remembered the name. It was greebles if anyone was wondering. :)

A preamp is used to boost a signal beyond its default output while keeping the signal-to-noise ratio low.

Since the signal roof of a device is usually relatively low, amplifying it with just your amplifier will introduce significant noise. So you would boost the signal to get a higher roof with a higher signal-to-noise ratio (more signal, less noise). You do this with a preamp.

A common case would be microphones, which really amplify poorly without a preamp. Another common case would be electric guitars.

Edit: In a home setting, the word preamp is commonly used for pass-through devices that enable levelling on a per-input basis. So that's basically on the level of a mixboard, where each mixing channel would be represented by a preamp, and the main out would be the final amp. So that way, you can equalize independently.

What's a good way to counter caffeine effects?

I tend to be really sensitive to most chemicals and its side effects. I sometimes need caffeine in the morning for the additional boost but i would love to not get the associated anxiety that follows a couple of hours later.
It doesn't matter if i build up resistance. Monotone chores helps slightly.

Have you tried replacing caffeine with something to give you a boost that won't give you these side effects? A fruit smoothie would give you a pretty instant energy boost but won't give you the associated anxiety.

Yeah smoothies do work (not quite the same though). I might just go back to drinking tea instead of coffee.

I don't know if this has any relevance but when i started drinking coffee (at a pretty young age) i drank like 8-9 cups a day for a couple of months (with no side effects). Since then i've been prone to anxiety attacks and the god awful restlessness.. It's fine for a couple of hours but lately it's been affecting me quite negatively.
It's also somewhat of a hit and miss. Sometimes it can be fine drinking a cup or two every day for a week or two but more often the side effects kicks in.
It's a shame really since i enjoy drinking coffee.
I have the same issue with smoking cigarettes, which i also enjoy (i only smoke on average 3 cigs a day). I can't really enjoy those little guilty pleasures any more.

Get water-decaffeinated coffee. It still has caffeine, but in really low levels, and it tastes exactly the same. Don't get chemically decaffeinated coffee though. It's meh!

how do i figure out what type of capacitor is used in schematics.

example:
LRIc3.png

what type of caps should i use?

oPLrb.jpg

C3 = C4 = 22pF (Ceramic)
C5 = 100nF (Ceramic)

There's no polarity sign in the schematic so you can ignore the polar capacitors (electrolytic). Google the size of the capacitor and you can usually find out what kind of capacitor it is when there's no polarity sign on the schematic.

Never heard of water-decaffeinated coffee. Is it like instant coffee or what? Can you provide me with a link?
I've tried decaf and it gives me a placebo effect but it's not the same, and it feels like such a waste staining my teeth for something that doesn't even have caffeine in it (yeah i know what you're thinking).
I will try some tea tomorrow instead. It kind of works but it just makes me drink like 4-5 cups instead. I might just begin doing the fruit smoothie thing again. Totally forgot about those.

No. It's a method for extracting caffeine from coffee, as in beans. This is one locally roasted brand I get (it's near my house):

http://www.havana.co.nz/product/type/17

I drink coffee for the enjoyment of the taste and texture. I have one normal coffee every morning, and thereafter I drink water-decaff'.

Decaffeinated instant tastes like normal instant, i.e. very unlike coffee. I don't tend to drink it at all, because I consider instant coffee to be a completely different thing, like tea or cocoa.

Oh alright. I'll check and see if it's available where i live.
Caffeine pills usually don't give me the side effects, which is kind of odd.

Anyways, thanks for the tips everyone!

Another question unrelated to this. Does carbonated drinks damage teeth? For example carbonated water? If so, to what degree and why?
I don't drink anything with sugar in it but recently i've been binge drinking carbonated water.

Carbonated water is acidic, I think, so I should think it does affect teeth. I'm not sure to what degree though.

I'm not really familiar with what file type is higher quality.

With MP3s higher bit-rates, i.e. the number associated with the compression level, indicate better quality and generally result in larger files.

Some file formats use minimal or no compression, and are considered lossless, these tend to result in larger files still. For MP3 you want higher bit-rates though.

A coworker of mine has asked me to make a reel of her work for her. One of the discs is formatted as a dvd, and it's essentially a television broadcast cut up into three video parts. The part I need is the first of the three chunks of video.

I can pull it from the disc just fine, but it won't behave properly. It will play in a video player, but it shows the entire length to be just 15 seconds (verus the actual run time of around 12 minutes), but it will keep playing past the 15 second mark. However, when I pull it into premiere/after effects/whatever, it will only play the 15 second duration (and cuts to single frames of video from later on then immediately flash back to the original spot).

I've pulled the other two files, and they work just fine. Any idea how I might get the video without errors, or is there a good way to just record video playing from the disc directly to my desktop?

edit: VTS_01_1 is the file in question, if this helps at all.

Right click on desktop. Select View and then small icons for example. I think medium is standard but i could be wrong. I've always used small.

Be sure to have the laptop off for the remaining time. I would suggest taking it apart and cleaning it with isopropyl alcohol but that would be a major hassle. Depending on the laptop and how much you spilled you could just use regular water to clean it.. Be sure that all water has dissipated before turning it on.

A couple of months ago i spilled some vegetable oil on a laptop and i used Arcticlean 1 and 2, which is used for removing thermal compound on cpus/gpus. The laptop works fine although i never got the chance to clean the keyboard from underneath so some stickiness is still there.

It's been awhile since i did video editing and i always got a minor headache dealing with dvd discs. Someone could prolly provide a better (simpler) solution but uhm.. I remember using Virtualdub and cutting up .avi's just fine. It's a major hassle and prolly just for the tech savvy.
There's probably guides out there and maybe virtual dub support dvd discs. If it does it should be quite simple.
