Forza Horizon - Fall 2012 - Developed by PlayGround Games

PGR4 physics = funner
I like realism better. I want a proper driving simulator set in a big open-world environment. I think that'd be awesome. Tracks like Fujimi Kaido and the old Forza 1 point-to-point tracks were fun because they give you that 'racing on public roads' feel thats so exciting.

Seriously, imagine if in real life, you could just take a Radical SR8 and were legally allowed to just GO. Wherever. As fast as you dared. Of course, in real life, you'd probably crash and die within 10 minutes, but its at least 'the dream', ya know? The closer a game can get me to this experience, the better.

Hopefully in like 25 years we'll have some sort of driver simulator where we could drive around our own town or wherever we want to as its all been mapped out and modeled automatically using GPS or some shit like that. But for now, I'll take a TDU with better physics, even if its only as good as PGR's.

I don't agree - PGR is fun because its an arcade city racer where the whole point is to earn kudos through style. Not everyone knows how to properly drift or do powerslides so they make it easier to do so. This is the exact reason I can't stand NFS games or TDU, the handling sucks. What's the point of adding ultra realistic graphics and cars when you're just going to exaggerate their abilities and absolutely destroy the immersion and atmosphere?

If I wanted to play an open world ridge racer I'll play tdu2. The forza name should only be reserved for sim, because then it downplays the rest of the games in the series. That's like gran turismo merging with mario kart. no thanks.

You summed it up perfectly :) Cept mine would be an ariel atom in the summer, on the 401 in Toronto - because the atom isn't legal in Canada :(

Tank slappers at every set of street lights FTW!

Oh, and Facebook profile hunting FTW. You can find some good info in there such as various PG employees taking "work trips" to Vegas for some reason.... ...

Last time I checked, winning the race by finishing first wasn't optional. PGR is fun because it has one of the most fun driving models in racing games along with an incredible sense of style and believable game world.

Very much so. And given that the trailer focused more on style than anything else, I'm hoping it errs on that side (though obviously not to the extremes of the NFS series). Drive from point X to point Y and earn Z kudos? I'd rather have that than just be restricted to races.

God, I hope some of that comes through in Horizon. The city/landscape modelling, driving model/physics, sound (Wiswell is with T10, so maybe?) and style of PGR4 in an open world environment would be the shit. Hell, they even had the walk-around garage in 3 and 4 (and 2?) so most of the game has already been designed ;)

I'm wondering if this game might be aiming for 30fps as it might be more graphically demanding with the potential setting to be locked at 60 fps. Especially if it has day/night and rain/weather, potentially they could use the IBL from Forza 4 and lock it to 30fps you'd think.

They better have walk-in/around garages in this game, they were awesome in PGR.

That's what I meant by the post above. PGR4 had all those things save for IBL (though the lighting was pretty good as it was, at least compared to Forza at the time) so all that's really missing is the "open world" aspect of it. It's insane how far ahead of it's time it was. AFAIK it was also the first racer that used the framebuffer trick to use higher-res reflections on cars.

Anyway, enough of the PGR lovefest, we need more info!

PS. Can't believe that trailer was actually legit... looked incredibly unprofessional.

I think NfS Hot Pursuit gave a good impression of how Forza Horizon is gonna be. I'd be shocked if it ran at 60 fps. Isn't this also the year of the next Hot Pursuit?

With tracks like Camino Viejo, Bernese Alps and Maple Valley which imo all have the equel amount of trackside details like the NFS games etc. I'm actually hoping for a sort of roadtrip Forza with 60fps. I mean if they make long, more vague looking tracks, shouldn't the engine be able to keep the framerate?

"To me it's not about competition with them. Having a colleague I trust to help me climb Everest, that's what I want. The next question is, do I trust them? There's of course risk. But I do trust their pedigree. Some of the best racing games in the last twenty years have come out of that post-Psygnosis fracturing and reconvening of the UK racing game development studios, and that's Black Rock, and Slightly Mad, and Bizarre Creations, and even Criterion. There's a whole lot of these great racing game developers [in the UK], and the talent [Playground Games] has attracted and distilled down into this team gives me great faith."

Greenawalt also made it clear that Horizon isn't Turn 10 or Microsoft's concept given to Playground Games, but the idea of Playground Games which they have been allowed to run with.

"We didn't say 'hey you guys should make a game like this', it was their vision. It was theirs. And they had embraced our franchise vision and made sure their vision aligned to the greater franchise good," explained Greenawalt. "And that just develops faith, right? I hear that sort of rhetoric from them and see that pedigree and I go 'I think I can trust you to help me climb Everest''.

Climb Everest's a buzzword for Horizon confirmed

If this turns out to be the case, then I'm out. And it would be a travesty on the Forza name.

Agreed.

About Dan G saying how neither Turn 10 nor MS came up with the Horizon concept sounds a bit weird.
I mean, did Playground Games one day just come up and say,"Hey Turn 10, we would love to take your game and put a spin on it"..?

How often does something like that even happen?

Imo, it's Mr Beard all along who came up with that proposition. He's the Capo di tutti capi who had big ambitions and decided that his ideas and visions for the Forza franchise were just too big to be handled in one game and so, decided to pitch the idea to MS, of a 'second team' to fulfill that vision..

Either way, I really admire and respect Greenawalt for his efforts and dedication to his projects. You can clearly tell he loves his job and loves delivering to the fans...

haha don't get me wrong, I'd play the shit out the game you just described! I've wanted a walkaround garage for forza since the first game :)

Wow, for some reason that teaser 'tone' trailer got me pumped! Not a single piece of gameplay, but the visuals with the audio is just great :D

The song is "The Chemical Brothers - Hey Boy Hey Girl (Souldwax Remix)" for people wondering :P

So... Turn10 = Infinity Ward, Playground = Treyarch?

Sounds really good, can't wait for some detailed infos and especially coverage/footage. Should not take long as it's coming out this fall I guess.

I was just thinking about that the other day (that it would be amazing if they adopted the COD approach of two teams). The games seem vastly different so franchise burn out likely won't happen and unlike FPS games, racing games can have lots of common assets.
Imagine the possibilities if they share assets, tricks, etc...
Maybe we could finally get proper EU versions of EU cars instead of the worse looking US versions (fucking orange sidelights ruining designs...), maybe the ex-Bizarre guys can teach Turn 10's art team how to calibrate their monitors so they can make realistic lighting/colors/etc, etc...

I was also thinking that it will be very interesting to see what they do in regard to car list and graphics. Do they basically take all FM4 cars (including DLC) and add newer models or do they take a smaller more heteroclite car list like PGRs ?
Do they aim for 30 fps with motion blur with the risk of making FM look bad or do they stick to 60 fps like all three previous FM ?

What would be amazing is if DLC was shared between games.
Basically you'd buy the car once and you'd then choose if you want to try it on open roads in Horizon (assuming it has open roads) or on racetracks in FM.

I'm curious what engine they are going to use.
My biggest wish for this game is awesome Forza 4 driving model, windshield in cockpits and open roads.

I think a Forza every yr would kill the brand imo.. I also don't think that Forza 5 should come out on 2013 either but that's just me.

using bits of engine, makes it sound like it won't be a sim...
Dunno. There are different resource limitations when creating an open world game instead of a circuit racer. We should expect that some compromises will have to be made.

At least they can look at Test Drive Unlimited 2 to see what not to do physics wise.

I agree TDU2 physics were not good, but I still enjoyed it quite a bit lol

I don't think so. It seems to me that they've thought about this and made sure that Horizon was as far as possible from FM in term of concept. Beside, if it's not a sim then it will definitely feel different and no overlap will occure.

I also think that if FM is treated (as I hope) as an ever evolving platform next-gen, this would be even more less of a problem.

I still try to every once in a while. I mean it's nice to take a long ass drive through beautiful vistas with gorgeous cars. I just don't deal with races and can't seem to drift to save my life. You're either in control perfectly or out of control entirely - there's no middle ground or recovery to be had.

It always had monstrous potential though. Potential that I hope can be realized with another developer trying their hand.

The best open world racer I have at the moment is Driver: San Francisco. Its sure as hell not a sim, but its a blast. If only it wasn't a perpetually sunny day in bizarro San Francisco. That game deserves and needs Burnout Paradise levels of DLC.

My only wish at this point is that the game has a killer soundtrack ala PGR4, hope them including Hey Boy Hey Girl in the trailer is an indication of that

Yeah there are alot of ways to keep the game "Forza" but go in a totally different style of racing. The slick menu interface, synth heavy soundtrack, livery editor, large selection of cars, upgrades, big online focus, etc, are integral to Forza, but the actual racing and structure of the main campaign could be far different. Of course since Turn10 is involved, Playground is going to have all of those resources easily available, which is a good reason to have the Forza brand on there.

just from that trailer i know i will hate this game already,

a shame to see a once great series go down hill with each game

4 is better than 3 but the first forza is the best by far, i played that game for way over 100 hours, didnt even complete 4 i got so bored

I played the first Forza but I didn't own an xbox at the time so I never got to go deep into it.

What was better about it in your opinion?

well the thing is obviously it has less features but the core game remains the same and i've gotten every forza game on release day so by the fourth game not that much has changed overall and it gets stale, you can say things like auction house and autovista are massive features but for me they dont do much, all i want is a lot of tracks and cars and modifications options, forza 4 has hardly any tracks for a game with that many cars and it seems silly to me instead of putting in tracks we've been asking for for over 5 years they instead make top gear bowling and stupid cars like the hummer. i really hope t10 focus on the things the REAL fans want for forza 5 such as night racing, weather, way more tracks and maybe even a track editor of some kind, oh and sort the old inaccurate models out (the f40 looks like a pile of shit)

Yep, you give me an off road vehicle and I'll want to drive it through Death Valley. You give me a rally car and I want to hill climb and rampage through Finland. Tease me with a freakin Warthog and I'll want to do high speed kangaroo hops across Space-Yosemite while unloading explosive armor piecing heat-death upon my opponents. You get the picture.

Being restricted to too few and too flat circuits just seems like a lack of ambition as well as a cock-tease. Which just makes an open world alternative that much more exciting.

Yeah, even if we won't be able to tear other drivers to shreds. But I'm willing to compromise ;P

Can I say this is a bizarre idea even though we don't know much about it?

The little I know is enough...using some hacked together engine that doesn't represent Forza to make a Forza branded game.

The idea of racing the 500 cars in Forza on open winding ribbons sounds cool. Take away the Forza physics and it makes you wonder WTF this has to do with Forza.

UK super racing developer sounds cool...so I can't completely hate this idea.

Would much rather have an official ALMS game using the Forza engine. But I know that's not gonna sell so...

Yeah because the trailer shows exactly what the game will be like and is filled with so much information!

Trolls gonna troll I guess.

Don't feed the troll.

Also in regards to what Greenawalt said about the engine, it doesn't necessarily mean it'll be an arcadey racer.

An engine like Forza would have to be mostly rewritten for a game like this.
