Mika, is he the best pop star since Madonna?

Not enough gifs in this thread. Since I don't really post POP gifs I spent 10-15 minutes searching for gifs on google. I was expecting this thread to be filled with gifs by now... POP GAF I'm disappointed.

My apologies:

I really really love Mika. I have since he arrived on the scene and think he's amazingly talented.

But the obvious successor to Madonna is Gaga. It's a pretty done deal. Brit had her run at it too so she's a decent horse in the race too.

Honestly, I'm not sure a new Madonna is even possible at this time in the industry.

Beyonce and Lady Gaga are pretty much the pop demigods right now. They stand on different sides of the pop spectrum but they hold the most social/pop capital from what I've seen. And it's impossible to dispute that they're both talented women. Definitely on a higher peg than Madonna in my opinion.

Well he's definitely more talented than Madonna

Madonna was a good dancer, that eventually learned to sing. Her greatest gift was an ability to play the industry like a god damned fiddle better than anyone since Bowie. In that regard alone, she's far more talented than Mika IMO.

But talent musically, of course Mika takes her down.

Hasn't he had only 2-3 songs and nothing recently? He's certainly got an eccentric stage persona and a good voice. Not a fan though.

No disrespect to him, but he always reminded me of a kid camping it up in front of his parents or something.

"Pop star" to me means someone on the level of Lady Gaga or Madonna - huge 'star' persona, big tours, completely over the top staging, heaps of hit singles and a bit of mystique about them. In terms of catchy songs with killer production, I can't think of many above Gaga at the moment. But then I'm a sucker for production with a big electronic element.

Man, Madonna fans seem really threatened by LG for some reason :P I'd say Madonna was fading out, but that intro to her Superbowl show was flawless. Wigs, etc.

While I don't think he's anywhere as good as the OP or thread title makes him out to be, "Big Girl (You Are Beautiful)" is a fucking righteous jam.

We don't accept reductive imitations.
Aside from that Born This Way controversy, I don't see much in the way of imitation. Her best stuff sounds nothing like Madonna, who's done nothing of note in years. This coming from someone who was a huge fan of her and Michael Jackson back in the day. Still, I think she'll be ruling the roost for a few more years :P

I don't think this is the thread to list the plethora of "tribute" she has payed to Madonna, so instead I'm taking it upon myself to book you a one way ticket to Woomera.

I've only heard of him due to his song for the movie Kick Ass, which I liked (both the movie and the song)

Welp guess I'm not needed here. The stans have delivered all the necessary gifs for whoever it is you speak of.

EDIT: Soulscribe no girl no. This ain't 09.

First reaction: Who?

Next reaction: Really?

Final reaction: Am I supposed to be impressed?

Janelle Monae

So how bout no

One of her singles

Though I suppose this isn't really pop. Can someone explain to me what pop is? Is it just popular music, or does it have a set style?

It counts.

Janelle Monae is amazing, and the fact that trash like Nicki Minaj gets more radio play isn't merely an injustice, it's one of the great tragedies of our time.

Tightrope, which you linked, is fantastic.

Cold War is also brilliant.

Then there's the beginning of her latest album, which is essentially three great songs that are actually one long greater song.

"Dance or Die" and "Faster" and "Locked Inside"

I was going to say Freddy Mercury and then say Musician, but I thought people would shoot me.

Anyway, I've been listening to his stuff again lately and can't get it out of my head how crazy good his music is.

He's also got an amazing voice, and no auto-tuning to speak of. I love this guys music. Am I the only one?

I'll drag out The Boy Who Knew Too Much every so often. It's a guilty pleasure unashamedly pop record.

Sir Greendown ftw! Sounds like it's being performed at the bottom of the ocean. In a really non-tacky and awesome way. The whole sequence on that album is fantastic.

Definitely one of the better ones, in terms of straight, pure, fun pop music. Top 10 easily, maybe top 5. I didn't hear much from his second album, but his first was absolutely brilliant.

no. just no.

I guess I can let Whitney off with a pass but yeah, as for that other one, it's exactly what I'm talking about.

I don't care if you don't like her music, since that's really up to you (though she does have more, er, other stuff) but Mariah's probably the most vocally technically skilled female singer - and I would say "singer," period, but I'm less familiar with the men - in the last thirty years of popular music, with Whitney being her only real competition.

and?

Boy do i love pop-diva GAF.
I could sit here and watch their gifs all day....all day.

You can link what you like. If you're saying she doesn't have talent or skills, you are factually wrong. On a level that your opinion on music should be disregarded from this point.

I mean if that's the way you feel then you should just go ahead and feel that way but you're wrong, completely and utterly wrong.
