I'd hardly call the effort that was put in as cheap or shoddy - a year and a half plus and a huge amount of artists were on Ep 1 as well, and there was also the same initial "reports of initial feedback have been positive" bits to boot, and John Knoll is definitely still of "a right mind" in terms of calling shots. :P

But we get it, you and several others didn't care for the conversion. But there were also several who was fine with it. I'm just saying if Titanic ends up with a similar outcome, it would likely still get a generally more positive reception simply due to the original source material. How could it not? :P

Because nobody loves a WINNER!

I'm definitely not spending a cent to watch Titanic in 3D. John Carter is hopefully the first and last time I watch retrofitted 3D. It added absolutely nothing to the movie.

The difference being that Disney decided to do a rush conversion job after they had already started shooting. Cameron has overseen the conversion for two years of Titanic. Alas, I'm seeing it just to see what the best quality conversion has to offer. I still don't approve of any film being converted if it had the option of being shot in 3D.

Titanic will also be re-releasing in 2D.

But, you know, it is Titanic. No amount of D's will make it worth another ticket.

There's nothing wrong with the "3D" in John Carter, it's just really flat most of the time. It's not all fucked up like Clash of the Titans. I doubt Titanic will be much better no matter how much time was spent on it, the movie's just not made for 3D, period. I'm not drinking Cameron's kool-aid this time.

I'm talking about most critics. Not the major online web blogs like AICN, Collider, /Film or even the prestigious Film Stage which actually seem to be in touch with what is going on with these movies.

I'm talking about the Newspaper reviewers and casual movie blogs who are similarly accounted for on sites like Rotten Tomatoes.

Eh, I guess I would actually have to READ newspaper reviewers. But that is a thing of the past :)

I'll take the New York Times critics over the fanboy crowd any day.

EDIT: this has me wondering. Outside of Pirates of the Carribean or pretty much anything starring Johnny Depp and their golden age stuff like Swiss Family Robinson, 20,000 Leagues, etc. has Disney ever had a real breakout live action adventure film? The Black Hole failed tremendously, the original TRON was a disaster and its sequel wasnt much better, Prince of Persia and The Sorcerers Apprentice bombed back to back. It seems their big budget live action films rarely do that well.
As said before, in recent history the National Treasure movies did quite well.

When are Disney and Pixar going to do a Mickey Mouse movie? That seems guaranteed to reach a billion. I'd prefer if it was just a regular old cartoon movie but people wouldn't watch it for some reason that I will never understand.
There was a Mickey and gang pitch being worked on about a year ago. I'm not very up-to-date on the happenings over there, not sure if anything else about it leaked or if there was word about it going into real development.

John Carter was AWFUL I thought it would be good at least Prince of Persia or hell even Socrerers Apprentice good...however it was an awful movie.

We're going to have Titanic in a box office thread next month. Get excited!

It was never made with 3d in mind so a conversion isn't really going to add anything to it.

And why bother going to see the 2d version? Paying full price to see an over decade old film is just silly. When classics are screened it's usually at a discounted price.

You might as well just buy the Dvd/Blu-ray since it'd cost nearly the same and at least you'd be able to re watch it.

I'm sick of this wave of OLD stuff as new stuff in 3d being at the box office. It's so lazy!

The only good news this weekend in John Carter is another nail in the 3d fad's coffin

Titanic won't even be the best April movie that's set on the ocean.

Don't be silly, Dan.

Next month's B.O thread will look like this:

Do we know how many theaters the re-issue is releasing in?
No idea.

Though I imagine it is alot. Every cinema complex here in Sydney is screening it just about. Every IMAX around the world will be screening it.

I'm guessing John Carter ends up being a domestic BO bomb but actually ekes out a profit due to international.

But I haven't seen it and have really no interest in seeing it. Just nothing about it made me say, "Dang, I wanna see that!" I had thought the same thing about Tintin until I saw the clip of him using the motorcycle on the clothesline. I was like, "Dang, that looked cool!" And that was a really good movie. But nothing of John Carter draws me in...

You see this picture? It is from a Hunger Games event for the movie. And not even a big one. It isn't the premeire or anything. Just a mall event in the mid-west for the film.

I reckon Titanic will once again dominate. Worldwide.
Had a been a man of wager my coins would side with Titanic.

It's kind of funny that Battle Royale is finally getting a US release after all of these years, on the eve of The Hunger Games premiere.

Titanic is a re-release, Hunger Games will do 300 million. Nowhere near comparable. When a movie is tracking over 100 million for opening weekend two weeks out it is nothing to be messed with.

The teen girl demo who ate up Titanic in '97 is OSBESSED with Hunger Games, like Twilight level obsessed. Pretty much across the board.

It's more likely that Hunger Games will outgross Titanic 3D domestically in it's opening weekend alone.
