The iPad/iPhone/iPod Touch Gaming |Thread4| NOT Doomed

I really liked ME: Infiltrator. Just beat it a couple of hours ago and I'll start NG+ when the retina updates comes out. I agree that it was not even comparable to the console games, but it was still a fun little third-person shooter. Extremely limited and often lame (paragon\renegade) but fun nevertheless.

Yeah, I'm enjoying it too. If anything it's shown me how well a third-person shooter can work on iOS devices. I'm surprised how quickly the controls connected with me and just felt right. I was going in it thinking I'd fight the controls until I got use to them. Makes me want to try out other shooters like it.

Mass Effect Infiltrator is pretty poop, I don't recommend it. The level design is poor, the shooting isn't great, it's an exercise in frustration, and so far the plot, writing, and voice acting suck. The paragon/renegade system literally boils down to "You see a bad guy. Do you want to rudely remind him he's lucky to be alive, or kill him?"--orders of magnitude more simple than the console games, if that was possible. Also there's nothing so far besides moving and fighting, so don't expect any interesting branching dialogue or choices. It's not a cost thing, it's just not interesting or worth your time to play so far.

Performance on an iPad 2 is hit-or-miss, haven't tried my 4S yet.

While I was expecting it since it's from the Dead Space devs, it is still really sad. I'm currently gripped by ME fever and I would absolutely love a decent iOS game to feed my hunger while I'm out of the house. I just... I don't understand why Bioware/EA would OK shitty games that dilute the brand like that. Well, alright I do, it's for the same reasons they OKd the shittacular Dead Space, because suckers will see the name and buy it.

What's worse is that all of us armchair developers could probably come up with an awesome ME portable game given the time/resources/talent. Sometimes I'd love to be a fly on the wall at one of these shovelware houses to see what they're thinking.

I find it amusing that the iPad's display is now so detailed that:

it can show an entire three megapixel photo on-screen without scaling,

viewing it up on the "big screen" of an HDTV through video out requires less resolution and therefore makes 1080p a comparatively easy render target for devs supporting it,

and desktop level development tools and environment can pose logistical challenges when trying to profile and test their apps.

Firemint talks about that last one.

Actually, it's a lot more expensive to shrink an image than it is to enlarge it.

Getting an iPad on Friday, my first iDevice since the iPhone 3GS, can't wait! This thread will be fun to look through and see all the games and apps I've missed out on in the last couple of years or so, especially iPad-friendly ones.

Hold the phone, it doesn't even do retina? Is this the case? If so, I'm not even gonna get it when it drops in price. With a game that 'basic' and, if the complaints are accurate, flawed, the graphics would be the last redeeming feature.

Downscaling an image can definitely be more processor intensive than upscaling (though it really depends), but apps with specific support for video out can just render directly to their desired target buffer.

Mirroring, on the other hand, would require scaling, yet that's usually left to dedicated scaling hardware support.

I'm really interested to see how the new Infinity Blade plays out.

Also, since the 3rd gen iPad has quad-core graphics, I'd love to see EA Sports give it more love particularly on the FIFA side of things. A semi-close Vita port would be pretty awesome.
Can't see it happening. Most iPad games are made to run on all iPads including iPad 1. So a FIFA game will be crap, and you might get a higher res version of the same crap on iPad 3.

Epic Astro Story is like complete and utter crack... So deliciously good. I've got 4 days starting from tomorrow in which I literally have nothing to do but sit around and play games. Can't wait.

I am really behind on my iOS gaming. I haven't purchased a new game in a couple of months, did I really miss any gems? Right now it been hectic and I'm just trying to get my money's worth out of what I have currently downloaded.

Finally got around to playing "where's my water" I'm having a real fun time with it. My initial impressions with the game are as follows-

Controls great (does exactly what it is supposed to do)
Great idea, the core of the game really works without trying to hard to be something it's not.
The initial levels seem to be easy, but I see the game getting a little more challenging as I progress.
Great game for people who like to "complete" (3 ducks, collectibles, challenges etc...)
Only thing is, I wish they implemented scores into the leader board, not just completion.

Who here has played this game "where's my water"? What are your impressions and do you like it?

And since I haven't downloaded a iOS game in the last 2 months, what would be a good top 10 list of games that I really missed out on in the last 2 months? I'm sure this will benefit others as well as myself.

I'm thinking once "where's my water" is done with I'm going to jump head first into a kairosft binge, starting with GP story.

It's time to bring my iOS devices back into the front of my gaming life, I have really been neglecting this device for too long.

Thanks for all your comments and advice in advance :)

Is it pretty much on the same model as their "town" games or it's different? I already bought Venture and Edo Town so I don't really need a third game like that...

Quite a few people consider it among Kariosoft's best from a little searching. There's a review here, they say it has more depth than the rest of the games like it:

Compared with Kairosoft’s previous games, Epic Astro Story feels even more engaging and deep. There are so many elements to juggle at once that it reminds us of PC-based resource management titles like Sim City and Civilisation - and that’s most definitely a positive thing, as those titles are some of the most captivating in gaming history.

However, this additional level of gameplay may make Epic Astro Story a little harder for those weened on the Kairosoft’s previous games. If we were going to level any kind of criticism at the game it would probably relate to its complexity; there’s just so much to keep track off that it’s easy to become a bit lost and confused, especially if you’re only playing in short bursts. This is a relatively minor complaint, however, and those of you hankering for a challenge will find the extra depth a massive boon.

If you go to the second page you can see a few of the other pics. Looks pretty interesting, hopefully like you say it's a new model to enjoy.

Will Astro be in the NA store soon, or does it take a while after the JP store debut?

No rush anyway, still plenty of ABS to play.

Oh, I fully expect EA to roll out the same trash PS2-era engine and higher res assets of what's already there. Too bad, though.

No Retina or Universal? I only play iOS games on iPad and the 2x scaling is ugly.

I can't believe how many attempts you took to guess my drawing of "USB". I drew the symbol for it!

BWAHAHAHAHAH! I came in here to mention this myself (also the horrific "socks" drawing I sent to someone else, my first attempt at the game and man do I suck at drawing with a capacitative screen!! I'm terrible at it whereas with a pencil I'm preeetty, pretty gooood)

yours was fucking killing me! Dude what the fuck that looked nothing like the symbol at first guess with that thing on the bottom right that looked like a cremino ice cream and totally fucked with my mind :P couldn't you draw a cable or something with the usb symbol on top? ;)
Anyway, on my part I was fucking retarded not guessing a 3 letters word, ahah! You should have seen my face, lol
Game is hilarious, freakin' awesome, but how to I get more colors to play with?

When yguys play games, do you use the iPad speakers or do you use a headset of some sort? What about if you are sitting next to someone in your house?

I ask because sometimes I find myself just browsing the net instead of playing a game because of the music/effects.

Does anyone have this issue or is it just me? I'm debating getting some sort of lightweight headset... Or something comfortable

If I'm at home: Loudspeakers.

If I'm out/somewhere where I can't put it on Loudspeakers: I play without sound........ unless absolutely necessary, then I put earplugs in. But I usually just play without sound, not worth the hassle of grabbing earplugs and putting them in and the discomfort related to it.

Thanks for the heads-up on the free game, Power of Coin. I've been playing it for the past three days. Pretty addicting. It was annoying, early on, having to wait for my coins to replenish, but as I unlocked prize sets I was able to go longer without running out of coins, until I reached a point where I'm now constantly gaining coins.

The best prize set is the sword set. Unfortunately(in my game, anyway), the purple sword is the rarest prize in the game. I was able to complete every other level 3 set, before I even completed my level 2 sword set. Fortunately, the level 1 sword set is the best one, letting you collect prizes even when they fall off the sides.

Also, in case anyone else was wondering what the jackpot does, I was actually able to achieve it, once. When you finally collect 3 orbs, nothing will happen, yet. Just keep playing until you reach Zeus, again. This time, Zeus will take an extra long time to defeat, compared to other times. I'm guessing this is like the game's final boss, even though it still loops infinitely after you defeat him. Anyway, after you defeat Zeus, while having 3 jackpot orbs, the jackpot fever will trigger, and 2000 coins will rain down for a period of time, granting you many coins and prizes. I was around level 200 when I finally got the jackpot, but I know I missed at least one orb, earlier in the game.

At this point, I see no reason to keep playing, since it's almost impossible for me to run out of coins, now, and there is no goal of prizes to keep striving for. I didn't spend a single cent on IAP, but if one were impatient and wanted to know what the best purchase is, it would definitely be the first level of the sword set. That 99 cent purchase will save you a lot time, waiting for coins to replenish.

As for strategy, try to keep the coins piled high so that you're more likely to get bunches of 4 or more coins to fall at a time. That's what triggers prizes and special coins to come floating across the screen.

Been having a good time with Adventure Bar Story. Up to level 18/Day 17 now.

I still haven't figured out how to switch in my 4th character or how to open that stone in the Forest of Nus. Any help would be appreciated. Can't really find a walkthrough on the internet now.

Power of Coin is also mindlessly addictive. It is great when you get on a good run and the powerups are just flowing. I'm only at level 20 on that one.

I don't know how to move the stone / break the wall in the cave either..yet!

And to change in your 4th party member, you have to be inside your restaurant and then a "party" option appears in the menu. Not explained anywhere sadly.

So I finished Incoboto (loved it) with 49 star charts and I'm pretty sure the last one I am missing is hidden. Does anyone know what happens when you get all 50 charts? Is it just an achievement?

Power or Coin is super cool but I constantly run out of coins. What's worse is that if I exit the app and restart it, I gain back an extra coin faster than if I were to wait out the 30 second clock. Because of no multitasking support, it treats every time as a new start as if you have 0 coins it gives you a fresh new one every time. The coins also regerate REALLY slowly when not in the app.

But I really wish you didn't run out of coins so easily, as I can see it being pretty addictive.

Lol your boxer pic was pretty great. It was a shitty uppercut pic though lmao. Took me a while to guess it.

The developer on Touch Arcade said that it was an achievement only. He emphasised how rare the achievement is, but it's up to you how much that means to you.

Also, for anyone in this thread who has an iPad but has not purchased Incoboto need to immediately. Think Limbo, Ico and Braid, it is superb.

Another thing I don't think was explained, you can get Water for free at the little well at the entrance of the main city.

Dodonpachi Resurrection HD. Ok well the game came out like a year and a half ago, but HD is a new release that makes it look much nicer on iPhone 4/4S and iPad 2/The new!

Does it have new art assets to take advantage of the new iPad screen (Man I hate calling it the new iPad)

cool! i loved that first game and played it to death for a while. iOS needs more of these tactical games, they work so well on the platform. This is what the Mass Effect game should have been!

My secret wish is that Firaxis is working on an Xcom iOS version as well. It astounds me that something like Xcom hasn't been made/ported yet.

I'd be surprised considering how soon it's out, they'd basically be releasing for it without ever bug testing on it. (well it can be done but it's kind of a gamble)

We are having a shot at upresing Monsters Ate My Condo for iPad 3 launch. Only took a couple of days given the nature of the art, and it is rare actual hardware exposes bus not uncovered by the emulator.

That being said, we have a bunch of updates in the pipe to get some of our working properly (or at all) on iPad 3. Was a busy weekend.

Siela does it in the intro before you get control of her, so it's shown at least.

The reef past the watery cave is such a jump in difficulty (in terms of how strong the enemies are). Also I don't care for Alter much. Maybe it's just his current weapon choice but Fred seems much better.

I use Alter and Fred, they do tons of melee damage (except against those stupid craps), so it's really easy to just auto attack and farm with them.

So... how do you unlock the next area after the reef/port? I hate how little direction there is in this game, but it's damn addictive.

edit: Here is a list of many recipes: http://www.gamefaqs.com/iphone/663207-adventure-bar-story/wiki/3-1-recipe-list It's pretty incomplete though. Creme Pasta is a really good one to make, easy ingredients, lots of money/xp. Ingredients are pasta, creame sauce, bacon on a frying pan, 1050g, 269 exp.

Has anyone figured out what to do with Ice?

Not sure yet! I just started day 17 and have school today so won't play much, but I was contemplating just farming everywhere until day 20 again so I can win another contest and level up more for the reef, since I think I'd die too quickly if I tried to go through it all now.

Also, do you know the recipes for the G. meats? Is there a barbecue or some other grilling tool I've yet to find?
