Titanic is a re-release, Hunger Games will do 300 million. Nowhere near comparable. When a movie is tracking over 100 million for opening weekend two weeks out it is nothing to be messed with.

The teen girl demo who ate up Titanic in '97 is OSBESSED with Hunger Games, like Twilight level obsessed. Pretty much across the board.

It's more likely that Hunger Games will outgross Titanic 3D domestically in it's opening weekend alone.

Only 1 of 4 Twilight films has reached $300 million domestically and it barely did so ($300,531,751). This is despite two of the films having an opening weekend of $135 million+. Hunger Games may hit $300 million but it's no guarantee if it sees drops like the Twilight franchise.

It's tracking over 100 million for opening weekend already, how is 300 mil not in play?

Hunger Games has more crossover appeal than Twilight. Teen girls are just as rabid about it and I know a lot more guys who have read Hunger Games than Twilight.

Only 3/8 Harry Potter films crossed $300 million domestically. It's not that easy.

Twilight:
Nov 21–23 1 $69,637,740 - 3,419 - $20,368 $69,637,740 1
Nov 28–30 3 $26,344,032 -62.2% 3,425 +6 $7,692 $119,706,509 2

New Moon:
Nov 20–22 1 $142,839,137 - 4,024 - $35,497 $142,839,137 1
Nov 27–29 1 $42,870,031 -70.0% 4,042 +18 $10,606 $230,947,696 2

Eclipse:
Jul 2–5 1 $83,637,242 - 4,468 - $18,719 $176,382,220 1
Jul 9–11 2 $31,708,438 -51.1% 4,468 - $7,097 $235,370,815 2

Breaking Dawn Part 1:
Nov 18–20 1 $138,122,261 - 4,061 - $34,012 $138,122,261 1
Nov 25–27 1 $41,683,574 -69.8% 4,066 +5 $10,252 $220,832,009 2

Aside from Eclipse, the movies sink like a stone after the front-loaded opening weekend.

It has gotten easier. I'd say the low-end of Twilight 280ish is the low-end for this as well. I see no reason why tracking will be off for opening weekend, the hype for it is like Star Wars Episode I level hype amongst teen girls.

I dunno, I think Hunger Games may have broader appeal than badly acted sparkly vampire x unrequited love-stricken wolf movies.

Tracking can be accurate for opening weekend. I would not be surprised if this hits $100 milion it's first weekend. However what happens after that? How front loaded will it be? Does it have legs?

Depends how good and well liked the movie is. Hunger Games has infinitely more appeal to men than Twilight so it's chances are good if it can pull them in.

Hunger Games is a tad different imo because the book and the movie are feeding off each other. It reminds me more of a Harry Potter scenario where one is creating interest in the other and it's hard to tell which is which.

If the movie is good, it will have the legs because interests continues to grow in addition to the anticipation of the fans. It is also male friendly.

Don't under estimate Cameron and Titanic.

You'd think these lessons would be learned by now.

Ask a teen girl when hunger games is out. Ask them when titanic is out. They will know the answer to one of these and it isn't titanic.

Hunger Games is on the same playing field as a franchise as Harry Potter and Twilight. Titanic is a rerelease

You understimate Titanic (how does one do that?). Not only are people who saw it 15 years ago going to see it, but this time, they're bringing their kids too. There is a whole generation who never experienced it.

But 300 million worth?

I could see Titanic actually going hugeeee overseas, but I doubt it will gross much more, if at all, than 100m in the US.

Exactly how I see it. Hunger Games will gross more opening weekend domestically then Titanic will gross its entire domestic run

You see this picture? It is from a Hunger Games event for the movie. And not even a big one. It isn't the premeire or anything. Just a mall event in the mid-west for the film.

Count the number of boys there. I got 2.

Ya know, I haven't seen John Carter(yet), but it seems everyone has been so eager to hate it. Even the POSITIVE reviews are like, "Eh, its not as fucking TERRIBLE as I thought it was gonna be...3/5". I read some pretty crazy, hateful stuff about it and its creators. Nikki Finke, in particular, was just brutal towards Stanton.

"To summarize: this flop is the result of a studio trying to indulge Pixar… Of an arrogant director who ignored everybody’s warnings that he was making a film too faithful to Edgar Rice Burroughs’s first novel in the Barsoom series “A Princess of Mars”… Of the failure of Dick Cook, and Rich Ross, and Bob Iger to rein in Stanton’s excessive ego or pull the plug on the movie’s bloated budget … Of really rotten marketing that failed to explain the significant or scope of the film’s Civil War-to-Mars story and character arcs and instead made the 3D movie look way as generic as its eventual title… Disagree all you want, but Hollywood is telling me that competent marketing could have drawn in women with the love story, or attracted younger males who weren’t fanboys of the source material. Instead the campaign was as rigid and confusing as the movie itself, not to mention that ’Before Star Wars, Before Avatar‘ tag line should have come at the start and not at the finish. But even more I think John Carter is a product of mogul wuss-ism as much as it is misplaced talent worship."

However good or bad this movie actually is, everybody decided to treat it like it was the new Ishtar right from the beginning. Seems a little unfair.

Agreed, my wife despises Twilight but is super hyped for Hunger Games as are the people at my work (I work in a college library)

I think its going to do pretty big numbers

Everyone wanted to be able to write these stories. They drive hits and controversy. Big budget sci-fi swords-and-sandals movie? They were salivating over failure ages ago. Marketing sure as hell didn't help matters, but damn. The movie was doomed from all angles, aside from the actual quality of it.

People are grossly overestimating Titanic's re-release. Hunger Games is going to annihilate it.

Nope. We're all talking about April numbers. You think HG is going to make more money than Titanic in April? Titanic is an April release and HG will most likely be very front loaded.

The word of mouth for the Hunger Games books was incredibly powerful (and transcended myopic demographic analysis). If the movie captures the appeal of the book, I would not underestimate it.

Meh, that's honestly neither here nor there. Who cares how much money HG makes in its second month. Still, I really wouldn't be surprised if still outgrossed Titanic in just April.

I also question the general audiences' desire for paying to watch Titanic yet again. There's no fanboy factor here like in other re-releases, either.

Tons of guys read the books, they're just not the kind of people who line up to catch a glimpse of the cast. Hunger Games is going to be huge.

The Hunger Games has potential to be absolutely massive. Seeing Cameron stans argue about this is ironic, because his movies have the same ingredients: romance, drama and action.

Cameron movies are also spectacular, so that's the one (big) hurdle THG needs to clear. If the movie meets expectations, I don't see how it will not annihilate everything in March and April.

I will be there for Titanic several times though. neverletgo.gif

Gary Ross is a good director so I expect The Hunger Games to at the very least be competent and entertaining, nothing like the Twilight garbage.

Stalker + Fan. It comes from that Eminem song.

In 300 years, longafter hip-hop is gone, the adjective "Stan" and the expression "To Ether Someone" will remain. And people will read on Wikipedia about them. And I shall say: "I was there, when that became a thing!"

Yes, I will be 300 years old.

Hunger Games has a massive fandom to my understanding. Even the news covered that thing earlier. And I have a feeling it's only going to get BIGGER.

Did you guys see the merchandise like I have? I saw a ton of shit for it at the mall. It's gunna be good.
