Whenever a dog's fur or nose touches my inner arm or neck, (and ONLY those areas) my skin sort of breaks out into a rash that only goes away if I wash it with soap and water. It can't be an allergy, can it? I mean, if I was allergic wouldn't I get a reaction when I touched them with my hands, feet, or the outside of my arms?

WTF is this?

Could probably still be allergies. Certain parts of the body/skin are more sensitive to certain irritants than others. You can handle flaming on buffalo wings all day with your hands but the second you touch your dong you're on a one way trip to ouchville. Just don't let a dog sniff your armpit and you should be alright.

By inner arm I mean, like,

this part. It makes holding a dog impossible. :/

(the pic is not my arm, btw)

For new page:

This might be too obscure a question even for this thread, so the first thing I'll ask is if anyone knows where I could ask a question related to orthodontics (besides going to my actual orthodontist who will charge me like $200).

My real question is: I still wear my retainer every night, but recently one of my teeth bones seemed to shift so that the inside gum now juts out a little and now jams against the inside part of the retainer which HURTS LIKE HELL. It left a small lesion the first night and I haven't been able to wear it for a week because it's too painful. This happened once before, and my orthodontist did something to grind down that spot on the retainer so that it left more space for the gums. But I'm not seeing him regularly anymore and it would cost a lot to see him again. Is there something I can do to grind it down myself? I've been thinking of something like a dremel or sandpaper but I don't really know what's OK to do this with. What do orthodontists use?

Does anyone know the name of a four episode mini series about zombies in a big brother complex basically? It's from England I believe.

Ok, what the fuck. Firefox won't remember me on Gaf if I'm on another site for 5+ minutes. I have the "save" box checked; gaf, my username, and password are all saved in my saved passwords list; Chrome will keep me logged in, so I logged out in Chrome to see if it was interfering with firefox, but nope.

EDIT: I fixed my problem by clearing my cookies and cache.

Sometime this year I'm looking to upgrade my audio receiver, but am happy with my speakers. My current one is pre-HDMI, which makes for wire pain due to needing separate audio and video switchers, neither of which has enough capacity for getting up to the at least 4 inputs I'd like. Anyway, I look at many newer units on the back and usually see something like
CE02799A_Specs05.jpg

My speakers are currently ALL attached with the spring type seen on the bottom right. But these have a different type of output for Front R and L, and yet a third type for the subwoofer? Can I get away with some adapters, and if so what do I need?

The screw ones for the front speakers have a hole (beneath the part that screws) that you stick the wire through. You don't need an adapter. As for the subwoofer, you can just use an RCA cable assuming your subwoofer has the same jack.

Thanks. My subwoofer doesn't have one, but knowing it's just RCA should give me enough to work with. I see a ton of results on Google for other people dealing with such things.

I want to watch my itunes tv shows on my tv. I have my tv connected to my pc with an hdmi cable. However, the shows still play on my pc when I watch them. What do I need to do to get them to show up on my tv screen? Is there an option I need to choose somewhere?

I don't have cable, but I've seen quite a few cable dramas on DVD and, more recently, on Netflix instant. I basically don't like to watch anything with commercials. My question is, when they show first-run dramas like Mad Men or Dexter on HBO and Showtime, do they take commercial breaks? Or do they present the show without interruption like its own mini-movie?

HBO and Showtime only run commercials in between shows. There are no commercial breaks in the middle of episodes on premium channels such as those. Mad Men however is on AMC and does have commercials.

Edit: And to clarify, HBO and Showtime only show commercials for their own programming.

Well, that's nice...I'm actually surprised to hear that.

What is the native resolution? If its liek my 24" its 16:10 @ 1920x1200.

And most likely I would say GPU isn't up to the task.

Is there a program I can use to compress video? Specifically, I need something on the Mac that can reduce .FLV files for work. I can't seem to find anything that really works well though :\

There's a trope I've seen a lot in cop shows where it looks like the murderer is going to walk, and when the hero cop confronts him alone at the end, the murderer will say something like, "Sure I did it---but you'll never prove it. I incinerated all the evidence. BWAHAHAHAHA!" Then the cop pulls out a tape recorder, rewinds, and plays, "Sure I did it--but you'll never prove it..." Then the murderer is handcuffed as his jaw drops open.

Is such evidence really admissible in court? Could you get a murder conviction with it?

I'm about to order a Synology DS411J (8TB) NAS but will I be able to use it with both Windows and Macs?

Will I just connect it with an Ethernet cable to my routher, and then I can wirelessly access it through my MacBook Air, Windows computer, Mac Mini etc. ?

I think I'll order today if so.

From what I understand it would be allowed only if the evidence was volunteered (given without any questioning) tricking someone into recording their confession they would have to be Mirandized first.

Hey GAF I'm a med student here in Brazil and I'm applying for a scholarship in the U.S.
The Institute of International Education asked me to write 2 essays - they are short, no more than 500 words. As a foreing student english is not my main languague so I would like to ask if someone could read them and tell me if there is something wrong with spelling, grammar or punctuation. Thanks!

As a medicine student I have many objectives: to be able to help people in need, learn more about the human body and psyche, understand how and why people get sick and much more. Thanks to my medicine studies I can say that I'm on the right direction towards fulfilling these goals.
Having the knowledge and the responsibility to make life changing decisions is something truly amazing and I'm grateful for that, but medicine is not just that, you have to listen to your patient, you have to understand your patient, and most important, you have to respect your patient. One of the most amazing things that I have learned in medical school was the power of respect and how this little - but powerful - thing can completely change and improve your relationship with that person in need. I'm always looking for a way to improve the physician-patient relationship. I truly believe that this is the foundation for a good, effective and regardful treatment.
I do think some subjects inside the medical field are more interesting than others, but that doesn't mean that you can just focus on some of them and ignore all the rest, as a doctor you must be able to understand and treat your patient as a whole. That being said, I must say that the most interesting subject inside the medical field for me is psychiatry. I absolutely love it's complexity and how beautiful the human mind can be. Being able to help, listen and understand those that suffer a different kind of pain, a different kind of agony is something amazingly rewarding.
As a future psychiatrist I plan to keep on improving my knowledge, to help people in need and to learn even more. I hope I can take these objectives with me throughout all my carrier and I will do my best to do so.

Being able to study in the U.S., to see and learn how different things are done there, to exchange knowledge and experiences, to meet new people and ultimately to become a better professional is something astonishing. The possibility to bring all these overwhelming experiences and knowledge back to Brazil is truly incredible.
I hope to be able to see things from a completely different perspective, from a different angle. To do that you not only have to be willing to do so, but you have to be opened to it, you have to embrace change to fully receive everything that this process has to offer.
When I come back to Brazil I will have a huge and excellent baggage of knowledge, of experiences and a whole new set of skills that will help me become a better medical student. I plan to share all this things with my classmates and with my patients, discuss everything, debate, spread all the fantastic things that I've learned.
I also plan to show people here in Brazil, in my university, what can be improved, changed, adapted from what I have learned in the U.S. so we can become better students, better professionals and ultimately a better institution.
In the end what I want is to show people how this experience made me a better person and teach them everything I learned. Knowledge must be shared, it must be spread, when you don't do that it doesn't reach it's full potential.

For those who participate on other forums (other than gaf), which would you prefer: Having more forums or less forums?

Would that be a deal breaker for you?

Depends how popular the forum is. All more sub-forums do is needlessly segment conversation which causes less people to participate.

Sort of like how about half of GAF doesn't seem to like the Community forum and call it 'the place where threads go to die' so they never visit it or participate in those threads.

I tend to stay away from forums where they get split up too much. Far too messy, easy to miss things. GAF is great that way. Hard to miss anything good cause it's always on the first page.

So, I was at Khols buying new clothes and I heard this song and it was good. Can someone help me find the song? It went something like "Time don't stop at all". I think it was that. It was either that or time doesn't stop at all. I honestly can't remember.

Is there a "view your last posts" or something like that on GAF?
I have a bad habbit of posting in a thread then either forgetting or losing it and another forum im on has that button and its a life saver haha

It is in your profile page.
Click on User CP, then Click Your Profile on left bar.

Yes, if you use the DSM it is as easy as that. You can also map the network drive so it just shows up as an extra harddrive on your pc but takes a little more effort. But the documentation/software you'll get with the NAS should be able to help you through that.

Any website where I can let people read my essay? I want some advice on it.

Google Docs or MS Officelive/Skydrive.

do you need to honk your car horn during or before the driving test?

mines broke

Not unless you are in a state that does an inspection. In Florida I just got in the car and drove. Though a horn is kind of important thing to have, and can be easily replaced without taking it to a shop.

I don't know if you still need this, so I only did the first one.
Also, in both essays, you wrote "you" a lot (e.g. you have to, you must, you can, your) which really means "one" (e.g. one must).
"You" is informal, "one" sounds robotic, but you could say "I believe that a doctor must..." or "as doctors, we must...".
