Generally, the rules of continuity would have you see that happen after such a focus on him dropping it was made. Of course I figured out that's probably what happened, but it was jarring to see him with it again suddenly.

Then exactly what purpose does him dropping it serve? Why even waste the energy writing, shooting and editing that scene if it has no bearing on anything whatsoever? Come on, that was so very clearly sloppy writing and producing.
I agree. Yes, it served to eventually lead to the death of Dale due to Carl not shooting the walker in the first place. I also thought it may have led to a situation in which Darryl would be in mortal danger and look for his gun in his bag and suddenly it's not there.

I mean, they never actually give the gun back to Darryl anyway. Eh, I'm probably coming across as looking too deep into this. But like Foliorum mentioned, it was a bit jarring to suddenly see him with the gun again the following week. But had he not had that gun on him he wouldn't have saved his dad too.

/highfive.

the more the show goes on, the more i dislike Rick. such an idiotic leader. and a hypocrite. Especially when he shot dead the 2 guys in the bar and then was all like "oh we gotta keep randall alive; oh the drama".

fucking rick. I can't wait for them to kill his entire family on this show.

Team Shane will live forever. No wonder snotty Carl is so dumb. With parents like Rick and Lori I'm surprised he hasn't gotten himself killed wiping his ass.

Can I be both Team Shane and Team Rick? Because I like them both. They're both badasses imo. Especially Rick this half of the season, what good character development to turn him into an awesome dude.

I did like both characters also. Rick has made some questionable choices but Shane was also batshit insane sometimes, lol.

Show's not going to be the same without him rubbing his head and giving that smug look of his.

There is no team Shane any more

I still like Talking Dead's "In Memoriam":

RIP Shane.

You were a loose cannon.

But you were our loose cannon.
My favorite part of this episode was how into the show Lauren Cohan is. She knew exactly what Chris was talking about every time he referenced a scene or whatever... Unlike Nicotero who always seems like he's off in space somewhere and has no idea what's going on.

Also like how dude from Chuck was the first one to almost criticize the show (but stopped himself).

The farm will be fine. You forget, it's surrounded by a fence, which Shane thoroughly checked for weaknesses at the beginning of the episode. The only way the zombies will get there is if Rick and Carl lead them directly to the farm by running there with the zombies right on their heels. They're smart enough not to do that, right?

So how did Shane know he was going to be alone with Rick? Rick just happened to take it upon himself to split the group with Glen/Daryl on Bravo Team and himself and Shane on Team Alpha. Was Shane crazy enough to kill anyone witnessing him murdering Rick?

Carl will fart loud enough to attract the walkers, the kid is just dumb like that. Rick will see the walkers and need to sleep on it before he decides what to do.

Shane was headed to this end. Let's face it: he started off awesome, this survivor, but the moment Lori split with him and picked Rick, the train went off the tracks. Like, cars piling up and wiping out a whole village kind of derailment.

Now, here's the thing that bothers me. In and around the farm in the last several eps, we have seen the following: Andrea shoot Darryl with a sniper rifle, Darryl shoot Dale to keep him from turning, Shane getting off a shot before Rick buried the knife in his chest and of course the massive amount of gunfire when Shane popped the lock on the zombie barn. None of these drew a horde of walkers out of the surrounding woods.

And yet Carl gets off one lucky shot to take out Shane and suddenly there are hundreds of walkers who hear it and shamble out of the woods. LAME!

Most of the other instances of shooting were during the day, other than putting Dale down. During the day all the zombies go swimming in the mud holes.

Why are we assuming that's why they came out?

Because it was edited that way. Carl takes the shot and we jump to a group of walkers whose heads pop up.

I suppose we're to believe that Shane led Rick a long way out there. However, given that Carl shows up walking across the field, the suspension of disbelief is too much. I just don't get how that single shot gets a horde coming after them, when so many other shots have been fired around the farm. And let's face it, the barn scene would have drawn walkers from miles away.

I swear I'm going to quit this show, first Dale and then Shane. Fuck this shit.

Fuck Lori and fuck that stupid kid.

The writing staff is like a bunch of ADD-riddled teenagers. They clearly were establishing something with that bit, but decided to drop it the very next episode. Why? Probably because they came up with some last-minute script change and had to neuter existing plot threads to make possible the series of events that they wanted to see occur.

Kirkman: In the writers' room, we felt Rick was passive at times and wasn't handling things himself. So to end this season with Carl killing Shane for Rick would have been a misstep. It was very important to us in the development of Carl as a character to have him have a hand in it. That's how we came upon the idea of, in a sense, both of them killing Shane.

They have a last-minute stroke of "genius" like this, and then hastily work backwards to justify it within the context of the plot.

Their heads pop up because they're close. Why are they close?

There was a scene in that episode where Herschel specifically said that the season was changing, he had 50 head of cattle out there and it would be like ringing the dinner bell. That's why he told them all to move in the house. I think they were expecting more and more walkers to start showing up around the farm.

You can also find some belief in this from the previous week with the walker stuck in the mud. The season changes.. it gets drier, no more mud, no more stuck walkers. Its quite possible that more and more walkers started to be attracted to the farm from all the gunfire, but they just couldn't get to it.

He specifically said the swamp would be freezing over, and that would bring more walkers. But that hasn't happened yet.

That still doesn't discount the fact you can't have a horde of them out there.

I think its very believable and you don't have to suspend much disbelief to think that the gunfire had been attracting walkers for weeks. Those things don't move very fast unless you're dangling meat in front of them. Gunfire attracts a few of them.. more gunfire attracts a few more.. even more gunfire attracts another crowd of them.. until you've got a horde piling up right outside the farm and they're stumble-drooling all over each other looking for a hole in the fence. Then enough of them pile up that there's pretty much nothing that can stop them and you've got a horde stampede on your hands.

There are a few things that I caught leading up to this 'horde':
  1. Herschel saying the season is changing
  2. The start of this episode had them killing 5 walkers
  3. 2 cows have died in the past 2 episodes
  4. Like 2 episodes ago when Shane and Rick fought, Shane saw a lone zombie (from the school) walking towards them
  5. As mentioned above, all the gunfire slowly attracting them but they get stuck

Let's just say the horde is coming because they heard it was the season finale.

Aren't Hordes just randomly walking around anyways?

(Semi-spoilers from Kirkman preview of season finale)
There's apparently more to it than that and the season finale will spend the first few minutes demonstrating what the herd is and how it formed/where it came from.

Fuck, it's not even Wednesday yet! Hurry up, week. End already. :(

...soooo you can see the finale and tell the calendar to hurry up and be September?

There was comic "facts" about herds.
Something like, zombies eventually just pile up together, and will carry on after other zombies. So, if one "hears" something, and decides to go in the direction, others see that, and follow. Picking up more and more along the way, until it's a herd.

Stuff like, if one zombie bangs on a door, it'll hold up. Until other zombies see this, and join in. Until the door can't stand up to dozens of wailing bodies.

Think this wasn't just a "Walking Dead" zombie thing, but I think it's part of the genre's "rules"

A small handful of zombies "shouldn't" be a problem, unless you don't see them coming. But 1,000 of them together...time to run.

Guess I can spoiler that. Doesn't really feel like a show spoiler, but it's generic genre rules about "herds"

Just saw the last 2 eps. HOLEEEEEEEEEEEE CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAP

Was that it for s2?

Fuck Lori and fuck that stupid kid.

Yup. They need to die but I like Shane and don't want him reduced to a broken man lol

Just the finale on Sunday, what I deem "The Night of the Walking Dead"

I'm sure the episode title is something else, but I'm sticking with that.

...you mean Rick right?

Because Shane is dead.

As a huge Night fan, I'm happy with that.

Why do I get the feeling that, at some point in this thread, Konex declared that there was NO WAY Sinister Shane would die?

To lazy to search it but it has to be true.

btw, some of the wording from some people...is the finale already "out there?" :/

My Title, was just off of the preview + Them boarding up the farm house in the last episode. I mean, should have saw the similarities coming.

Yes, the whole episode has been detailed.

Man...if anyone posts that shit in here without spoilers, I will riot.

lolololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololololol

Who gives a fuck about Shane? Daryl is still alive. All is right in the world.
Don't get me wrong I like Daryl but Shane was the perfect counter balance the show needed, Rick and his ilk(and I like Rick) needed a balance.

The survivor mentality that Shane had was great and he was easily one of the best characters on the show. Taking out Dale and Shane and keeping Lori and the stupid damn kid grinds my gears so much, they need to go down kicking and screaming.

Why isn't the implication enough? The kid went out there and got it. The spot he dropped it has seen many characters visit it multiple times so it's not far.

Because if he went back, either Carl saw the zombie still stuck there or he didn't. Either case--Carl going back out there and putting himself in danger again or the zombie being gone--would be worth showing the audience. Not to mention every time Carl leaves the farmhouse to walk around in the damn woods alone, the show becomes harder to take seriously.

It would have made more sense for him not to drop it in the first place, but I seem to remember he did drop it and run away without picking it up.

I thought it was a bit weird that Shane killed Randall off-camera.
An old fashioned neck-breaking wouldn't have been too graphic for the audience and I dont see why the audience shouldnt have known what Shane did, straight away.

I thought that gave Randall's murder a little more impact. It also gave us a nice shot of Shane and Randall walking past a tree, then Shane returning into frame alone (only to run face-first into the tree).

Let's just say the horde is coming because they heard it was the season finale.

Yep.
