Final Fantasy Versus XIII was announced in 2006. It is now 2012. These are facts.

I think it's using White Engine with modified additions from Luminious (isn't that the name of their next gen engine?) or at least I could of swore it was.

Versus engine is a modified version of White Engine which was codenamed Black Engine at one point. Since then it's become completely proprietary (in addition to adding Luminous lighting technology)... meaning they won't be using it again for any other game aside from Versus.

.... How about those Action-y RPG games that were announced a bit back? Something about an action/adventure game using Unreal Engine 3 or something. *shrug*

Had an artwork out that reminded me of Vampire Hunter D. That and a few other games.

You guys, after all this time, why would you expect for substantial news/reveal for VersusXIII to come out so randomly? I'm thinking we'll get info either at the next E3, Tokyo Gameshow, or major SE event. Otherwise, I'm content setting hype for the game on the backburner while I play other stuff.

And for those asking why anyone should look forward to this, 1) Whatever footage we've seen looks fantastic, & 2) Nomura has a pretty damn good track record when it comes to games he's in charge of. Unlike SE's last few efforts with FF, this one actually looks like it's a worthy follow-up to FFVI through FFX with just enough modern changes (not to mention polished presentation) to make it feel like a current-gen FF that's actually good.

Watch the answer be FFXIII-3 and some cellphone and browser based crap FF spin-offs. Oh and maybe some more episodic DLC game/project bullcrap.

Is that really true though? This game is an action RPG from what I've seen so it should play nothing like a traditional FF game. The thing that excites me for this game is that the aesthetic looks interesting and the characters look pretty cool. I've never played a Kingdom Hearts game so I have no clue what to expect from the gameplay.

Sounds like a huge waste of time and money. Par for the course for Japanese development this gen I suppose.

Well even last generation it was not uncommon for big Japanese projects to have a dedicated engine created just for said specific project.

I don't even care. Too much pretty-boy in the designs, too contemporary a setting (even FF8 had more fantasy elements), and action way too close to KH's gameplay.

Unless I'm wrong and that gameplay is wildly fun too, this game will be a giant disappointment.

That seriously seems like a massive waste of resources.

At least they managed to churn out a FFXIII-2 from the basis of XIII, which regardless of how comparatively poorly it's selling right now should still net a tidy return on investment.

I can't see how VsXIII will do the same, without going multiplatform, considering the general software climate and mixed reactions to the last two XIII names. It definitely needs to drop the XIII moniker.

Yeah, I know in that regard it's pretty different, but it seems like in terms of scope and ambition (worldmap, towns, satisfying battle system) it'll fit right in. (Assuming everything livs up to hype and potential along with writing and story.)

Honestly I don't even think Nomura exists any more. He has probably reached a higher plateau possibly up in the sky (where he got the idea for immaculate cloud physics) and is trying to find his way home.

Versus can wait.

We have previously got info about Versus from Famitsu and Dengeki so it's not that they only reveal new info on big events. It doesn't have to be a gameplay trailer or screens, people are just dying for new info even small bits and pieces.

At this point I think they need to reveal a freaking release date... that should be their FIRST priority.

They have trouble showing us images from the game, you think they can give us a release date? Wait until 2013 before they announce a date. I'm not even joking.

I've got to say, depending on how open and honest Nomura and other team members are when interviewed the Ultimania could be far more enjoyable then VS XIII.

I think they've showed enough, seriously... they should discuss how different systems work if they do any more interviews and what not... any trailer they show SHOULD include the release date. (Maybe I should've been more clear, putting the release date in the next trailer.)

As SolidSnakeX said, I hope it's event-related. E3 or their own event would be nice. Either way, I'd be very surprised if they went with DQX as their AAA game this holiday (Japan).

Nirolak brought this up but the other big reason could be their western games + marketing timeframe for those games. Think about it.

its been too long... but its worth the wait.... it will prolly be the best FF ever :D I hope its going to be worth the wait

To me it really doesn't need to be the bets to be worth the wait.

That and honestly VS XIII isn't the important thing he has done this gen in my mind. Regardless of how this game turns out, the fact he has took on Gooch's role and has pushed younger guys to the front and let others run with ideas is bigger then one game.

Does SE have a 1 man PR team or something? Every other publisher is able to show off multiple games without issue. I'd assume that they're saving it for E3, but with SE you never know how they'll fuck things up.

you can't even understand square's hype.

Look at us, when even a morsel of information comes out we have 20+ page threads about it. They are on some next level shit.

At this point I can only imagine they don't want their big games to overlap, and that includes Eidos stuff.

Just a guess though.

If they port vsXIII at all, I want it for iOS.

By the time it comes out, iPhone 5S and the even newerest iPad should have bodies that are ready.

Too soon to announce the multiplatform news, I guess. XIII-2 is still fresh (a fresh piece of shit at that). When they know the PS3 kids are done buying it, it'll come.

That's more because they haven't shown to have a clue as to how to efficiently make a game in around a decade, rather than mastery of PR....

I kinda wish XIII-2 and its subsequent follow-ups (DLC/physical/whatever) would tank harder. Maybe then they'll abandon that entire mess of a project much sooner and leave room for VersusXIII, and eventually KH3
and eventually FFVIIremake
to finally take center stage. They've really given us the run-around with un-asked for distractions for way too long.

FFXIII-2 was made in less than 2 years, Kingdom Hearts 3D has taken a bit more than 2 years (though, they did localize BBS with additions and make BBS Final Mix with even more additions for Japan at the same time), Dissidia 012 was released a little over 2 years after the first one, The World Ends With You's development didn't take too long etc.

The Fabula Nova Crystallis saga =! all Square Enix games. And even those games were mostly just announced too early when they weren't prepared to work on them yet (Type-0's development team worked on Crisis Core & 3rd Birthday before really crunching out the game, the Crystal Tools weren't ready for XIII's development and they then had problems getting them ready), instead of it actually taking forever to make the games. I think XIII-2 clearly shows that they can push out a quality game in a short time as long as they don't run into technical difficulties. Versus should be an ambitious & massive game, so that partly explains why it has taken so long. It's no straighforward pipe-fest like XIII.

In my opinion they just want to keep Versus's news for E3, planning a sort of re-launch (and re-branding?) of the title with some megaton (multiplatform, maybe change of title, some gameplay revolutionary ideas for the series ect.). I'm sure they're going to bet everything on this, and having the whole stage at E3 for them will certainly lead to a wider impact on the audience than not on some "Famitsu Weekly" exclusive to Japan.

http://andriasang.com/con0a1/nomura_versus_mystery/

Tetsuya Nomura says in this week's Famitsu that he's almost ready with preparations for sharing new Final Fantasy Versus XIII info. So does that mean we can expect an update soon?

Apparently not. According to Nomura, certain circumstances, which he describes as "totally unrelated," are preventing him from sharing the info. He also said that he's not allowed to talk about the situation, so all he can do is continue engaging in discussions. Discussions with who? He didn't say.

Mysterious!

While I'm fed up with all the silence regarding this game, it sounds like Nomura would like to share more info and he could be just as frustrated as the fans. It also sounds like he's a very honest person, he'd try and say as much possible without pissing SE off, which comes over as silly and non news.

http://andriasang.com/con0a8/nomura_kh3d_interview/

The mysterious Final Fantasy Versus XIII comment we posted earlier from Tetsuya Nomura was part of a larger interview that appeared in this week's Famitsu. As you might expect, the interview's main focus was Kingdom Hearts 3D, which sees 3DS release on the 29th.

Next week we *might* get something I guess.

It's possible that we'll hear more about Versus next week, as Famitsu is promising another interview with him for its next issue.

When will the teases stop?

Gosh, I feel bad for my friends who really want to know more about this game but just get the crumbs under the table for consumption every once in a while. They genuinely seem crushed when they hear about a new Nomura interview, and then don't hear what they want to hear upon learning of its content.

From the way a few of my friends talk about it, well... I hope people won't get let down by the final product. As an outside observer, people seem to expect a lot from this game, so I wonder how players will respond to the game if it gets released.

Just drop the XIII.

Final Fantasy Versus sounds just fine. Would fit with the whole "a fantasy based on reality" stuff, making it stand out from other Final Fantasies.

I've grown quite attached to the name Versus.

---

And I'm guessing I'm silly to hope that the game will come out at the end of this year in Japan and early next year in the West? Would fit with their new release schedule, and would set up late 2013/early 2014 for XIII-2.

I mean, assuming it's true that they're actually developing it now and all.

I like that there's small hope... why a second interview though & didn't he say he wasn't at liberty to talk about it?

I'll probably try to focus my efforts on something else so I always don't set myself up for disappointment...

it's possible there will be an event with versus on during the week/weekend. Remember the DQX event? That was announced on Friday and conference was on Monday. So maybe Famitsu already have a follow up interview but can't say a thing till SE announces the conference and re-unveils Versus again :P

It's probably cus they are changing the name to XV

So it's best to start giving out new info after they have officially announced Versus as FFXV (at E3 probably).
