NFL Off-Season Thread: "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?"

Browns fans need to face it that we are building through the draft. You don't see teams like Green Bay, Baltimore, Pittsburgh, or New England going crazy in FA. Plus, honestly who would want to come to Cleveland.
It's sad because I feel like getting a QB in FA and having your draft (with 2 firsts) to address offensive play-maker needs would be the path of least resistance, instead they seem to want to gamble on another random non-top of the draft QB.....or stick with Colt, who doesn't seem to want to throw it past the line of scrimmage unless it's under 10 yards.

In part, that's the offense, but sometimes you have to take your chances on a receiver with any separation down the field...and not have it end with the ball sailing way over the sidelines or the back of the end-zone. I didn't really watch many full games, but that's just my opinion from catching some parts with my father-in-law.

Not real excited about the Eric Wright signing especially at the amount he's getting paid. Think I saw like $37 million or something. :(

What is the status of Alex Smith? I would assume the Niners will resign him but whats the deal?
Don't really know. Supposedly there is a 3 year offer on the table, probably between $25-30m, with the third year being non-guaranteed is my guess. Originally it was thought that Smith wanted 5 years, but he recently came out and said he's good with 3.

So either the Niners are waiting to finalize for some reason, or Smith wants more dough.

I do not envy y'all.

that dude from espn who loves the Vikings said:
Our friends at Pro Football Focus (PFF) ranked every full-time NFL cornerback last season based on video study. Wright finished at No. 105, in large part because a league-high 75 passes were completed against him. His inconsistent tackling allowed receivers he covered to accumulate 319 yards after the catch, the eighth-highest total in the league, according to PFF.

Annnd 9ers people, how was Ginn at returns? I know mostly his dropping rep.

I honestly will never get the "hate" for Campbell. Look at both Washington and Oakland after he was let go/injured.

I'm convinced people who say this never watched many full games of Campbell in washington. So many games he just never put together more than one scoring drive, yet managed to rack up 250+yards with maybe one pick and one td and so analysts would call him "consistent" or something.

His career can be summed up in one play, 4th and 10, less than one minute left, down by one score, and Campbell throws a 2 yard pass to the flat.

I've gotten tired of Weems as a returner as of last year. There were two times where he fucked up on balls outside the 15, and the offense wound up inside the 5 yard line.

Presumably the Bears are signing him as a 4th WR/backup returner. Doesn't make too much sense to me but go for it.

I have fond memories of Eric Wright getting torched the last two times Roddy played him.

Although I don't necessarily care for the Wright deal, I am thrilled that the Bucs are finally spending some money after sitting idly by for years and years.

Why do I even bother..

You're right the Raiders were clearly better with Boller and Palmer than with Campbell.

The Redskins would clearly be fucked regardless between those 3 qbs. Well maybe more so if Kyle Boller was starter. But really Palmer/Campbell at the helm.. either or.. not going anywhere

Wow, that Nicks deal is crazy. Bucs just throwing money around and it won't matter because Fatty is the one running the show!

He's horrible. Dude got burnt so many times in his last year with the Browns and he won't tackle either.

Wait, people actually expected the Bears to void the Marshall trade? He is a game changing player for the offense, and Lovie will keep him in check! Lovie is arguably the best head coach to deal with his kind of crazy. Miami had no direction from the head coach.

@espn_efcnblog:
#Lions announce 7-year extension for Calvin Johnson. Surely a monster deal. Important detail is how much cap space recovered for 2012.

Time to make a run at Mario Williams and maybe get Terrence Newman on the cheap.

Why would this remotely be a "want" for any team? Newman is straight garbage anymore. Even as a depth signing, there are younger and better options.

It's not a "want" but the Lions are woefully thin at CB - that's why I say 'cheap' - for depth.

CB Eric Wright's deal with Tampa Bay: 5 years, $37.5 million, including $15.5 million guaranteed.

Too bad the Lions couldn't keep him, but that seems a little steep.

That's what I'm saying. He was a pretty decent kick returner but as a receiver, he had all of 11 catches last year. Of course, we are talking about the Chicago receiving corps so this could be an upgrade.

Tribune says Bears primarily want to use him as a gunner and possibly 3rd KR behind Hester and Knox, but he'll certainly get some WR time, considering the starters at this point are Marshall and..........Hester? (lol, or is it Bennett?)

Adam Shefter:

Lions reached agreement with WR Calvin Johnson on a seven-year, $132 million extension that includes $60 million guaranteed.

I think that only saves us $5M on the cap this year (could be more, depends on the structure of the yearly salaries), maybe $10M, LOL.

Lions overpaid for CJ. Bears got fleeced on the Marshall trade.

:jnc

Gotta suck to be a Vikings fan nowadays. Toughest division in the NFL and the Queens aren't making any noise!

The Weems pick up is interesting. Does this mean Knox is won't be ready for the start of the season? Or maybe the Bears are going to shop Hester? I believe he is due a 10 million dollar bonus next season.

Edit: Holy cow at Megatron deal! Got paid!

I didn't think it was possible for there to ever be a deal that would make Larry Fitzgerald's look kind of small by comparison.

Mlive reporting that megatron is close to signing a SEVEN YEAR deal!

Fuck yeeeeaaaaaaaaaah!

YES YES YES YES YES

And I'm sorry, that is NOT overpaying. He's the best receiver in the league and changes the entire game. Love it.

Stafford-to-CJ for 7 more years? Yes, please!

That CJ deal frees up some cap space as well. Good deal.

I'm actually not that upset about them not doing much in free agency. Build the team through the draft, for the most part.
