NFL Off-Season Thread: "Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?"

That CJ deal frees up some cap space as well. Good deal.

I'm actually not that upset about them not doing much in free agency. Build the team through the draft, for the most part.
Tell that to Dan Snyder. Though I guess they have no choice but to pay guys big in FA after dealing away all those early draft picks.

Now it is to question how they draft with the choices they got. Giants still got Chris Snee, Justin Tuck, Corey Webster, and Brandon Jacobs in the drafts where they lost picks for the Eli Manning trade. Let's see how Washington does it.

He's open in triple coverage. Can't scheme that.

Agreed. It's why guys like CJ and Fitzgerald deserve deals like this. QBs and elite WRs are the only guys who deserve these deals, IMO.

Update:

RT @EaglesInsider: BREAKING NEWS: #Eagles have traded OT Winston Justice and a 6th round pick to the Colts for a 6th round pick.

agreement with WR Calvin Johnson on a seven-year, $132 million extension that includes $60 million guaranteed.
When did the Yankees start signing football players?:)

I am sad to see Winston go. He wasnt very good but still it is nice to have extra OL for depth plus swapping 6ths is basically no return. I wonder how much this move saves the Eagles?

Just reading about Brandon Marshall's nightclub incident...

Wasn't Jay Mariotti a Chicago sports journalist and basically do the same thing?

Is it possible to say that Megatron is over paid now?

Never. You can't overpay a guy who catches TDs in triple-coverage. I'd give him eleventy billion dollars if I was the owner and then surround him with Pop Warner players.

Here you go:

ESPN Blogs NFC East ‏

Eagles trade rationale: They lose a big salary they didn't want to pay, and they move up from middle to top of sixth round.
No numbers as of yet but apparently enough to make it worth moving him.

Eagles also annouce they have signed restricted free agent DT Antonio Dixon to a one-year contract.

CJ's "guaranteed" number is $60 million but talking heads are saying that means absolutely nothing.

The happiest person with this deal? Matt Stafford.

How much for CJ? Dude better win three Cy Youngs and pitch, like, 10 no-hitters. Could have just slapped the franchise tag on him every year for the next 7 years and saved a ton of cash.

Lions beat writer is now saying that deal saves us $9 million in cap space this season alone.

Hype rising. Possible Tulloch re-signing.

And then have an unhappy player? No, way. The contract is a good one for all involved and saves them cap space now. That's all that really matters for the time being.

Plus the ~7 million they already had gotten under, plus the 1.6 from the skins and cowgirls?!

So the shit isn't really guaranteed then if he doesn't play all 7 years?
In many cases, that's how NFL contracts are structured yes.

I'll use Terrell Thomas' contract with the Giants as an example. He signed a 4 year, 28 million dollar contract with 11 million guaranteed and an option built into the contract. The option means that in reality - it's a one year 2 million dollar contract. If after the first year, his knee doesn't hold up the Giants can release him with no hit and no obligation to pay the remaining guaranteed money. Terrell walks away with 2 million at best.

Smart teams either build in those types of options, move the money through play incentives (i.e. this money doesn't get triggered unless you reach this milestone) or structure the contract so a good bit of the guaranteed money is in the later years when it's feasible the player will be cut anyway and they don't have to pay it.

Great news about the Eagles signing Dixon. Guy was a beast 2 years ago and the only run stuffing DT they have. Hopefully he is healthy this year. Just need to get Landri and Mathis re-signed and pick up and OLB and things will be good for the draft.

Lions now need an oline, lbs, and defensive backs

I think you're a secret Lions fan. You know us too well.

WedgeX--I read two different things about the contract restructures. Some were saying that they actually only got the team back to the cap ceiling because they were 7 million over.

:jnc

Gotta suck to be a Vikings fan nowadays. Toughest division in the NFL and the Queens aren't making any noise!

The Weems pick up is interesting. Does this mean Knox is won't be ready for the start of the season? Or maybe the Bears are going to shop Hester? I believe he is due a 10 million dollar bonus next season.

Edit: Holy cow at Megatron deal! Got paid!

Hester's 10 million bonus next year is for him having WR1 type production which isn't happening.

I'm convinced people who say this never watched many full games of Campbell in washington. So many games he just never put together more than one scoring drive, yet managed to rack up 250+yards with maybe one pick and one td and so analysts would call him "consistent" or something.

His career can be summed up in one play, 4th and 10, less than one minute left, down by one score, and Campbell throws a 2 yard pass to the flat.
Ah, the good ol' days...

I see. A lot of it is for show then. So is there anything guaranteed at all? Signing bonus maybe?

So why aren't more people saying this when it comes to the Redskins and their Pierre Garcon signing?
