Final Fantasy Versus XIII was announced in 2006. It is now 2012. These are facts.

As sad as it is to say... I almost wish they were still doing them. At least the leaks were reliable!

Yeah, at least we would get impressions and let our imaginations go from there. Occasionally someone would leak a cell phone video and try to upload it. And I remember some people would even draw the trailer from memory. Crazy shit.

Are we all in agreement that there's no way this game, whatever it ends up being called, will end up being exclusive to PS3?

There's only one other system it could go to and that's 360. I can see it going either way. Certainly won't be ported to next gen systems, there wouldn't be any point. Waste of time and money, and this game has already wasted enough of that.

I'm not in full agreement with that. Would I be surprised if it were multiplat? Kinda, but only due to development problems. With that said, seems like the type of game they just want OUT.

That's one of the most annoying things about SE. Announcing a game then having to wait a couple years to actually play it.
They really are the worst offenders.

On the topic of naming convention: I'm in the camp of not thinking it's completely necessary for the name to change, but I wouldn't AT ALL be surprised if this resurfaced as FFXV. As far as tone and aesthetics go, this is their most Western marketable FF game in a long time and I think they'll want to capitalize on every advantage. Making this a "mainline" FF game would help. Pimping Noctis as this generation's Cloud could go a long way for them, especially grabbing the attention of people that haven't played a FF since the PS1 days. (Young guy in a modern-looking fantasy world with cars) Not to mention it won't be turn based, another plus as far as Western appeal goes.

Hard to say. Last year's trailer reaffirmed PS3 only, and I had heard back around September that that was indeed still the case.

If a port happens, Nomura probably wouldn't be the one to do it, however. We'll see. People thought DQX was going to go to PS3 but that didn't happen.

And with a custom engine, Versus might be very difficult to port, similar to MGS4. But of course, that's all speculation... it doesn't help that there's been no real news in over a year.

Maybe (scary thought) there isn't much else there for them to talk about?

They showed some new direct feed screens to the press last year which apparently looked jaw-dropping, but have withheld them from the public ever since.

I get the impression that Nomura has a lot he wants to show, but management isn't letting him.

As has been the case since before E3 last year.

I get that feeling as well, I mean he has been ready to talk about this game since last July, he's been trying to give us little tidbits here and there but they are probably cracking down on him for that.

Hopefully this is all to for a major E3 reveal, otherwise I question SE's judgement.

Does it even matter at this point? FF doesn't carry the same cache now, I'd doubt it'll make much of a difference.

I just hope they can develop to PS3's strength and some installs to help the loading. FFXIII-2's loading was atrocious.

Like Kagari said about MGS4 I think porting now would be a large problem if the engine was built with PS3 in mind and went too far before any new decisions could be made. If they do put it on other consoles it won't be from Nomura's team imo.

SE are such trolls. I wouldn't be surprised if they tease a trailer for a major FF game at this e3 and everyone thinks it's Versus...only for them to reveal it as XIII-3 or something else.

13-2 was poorly optimized all around. FFXIII didn't have those issues, and Versus will definitely have more FMV than 13-2 to help background load.

The internet will explode.

Like almost as big of a shitstorm as when XIII was announced for Xbox.

They will announce the new FFXIV trailer at E3.... don't dream of Versus :/

So let's assume this game is not releasing until 2013 holiday...

Will there be a filler game for them to ship a demo with?

I'm still not entirely convinced this game will ever see the light of day.

Really? Why wouldn't it? I can't see any logical reason it would actually get canned especially when a lot of people (even those who didn't like 13) are curious to see it. Cancelling it at this point would just feel random and out of no where.

Especially sense, you know, the game development is fine.

Management is the reason we aren't seeing anything.

He even said that much in an interview a few years ago.

I could just be a pessimist but - where there's smoke, there's fire. The fact that management is being so hush hush about this scares me. And it COULD just all be marketing and strategic planning that's holding off any announcements. Maybe they're doing exactly what we want and now showing anything until it's ready to be shown.

However, on the flip side, maybe the project is TOO ambitious, I don't know. It wouldn't be the first time a title has been canned because it's taken too long and used up too many resources only to realize it isn't a viable venture. Maybe Nomura's vision just isn't possible this generation and it's taking SE a long time to realize it.

Pessimist, I know. I'm preparing for the worst, hoping for the best.

Don't hurt me!

Is there any point in an exclusive FF game next gen if everyone is using AMD CPU/GPU combinations?

There wasn't really a point to it this generation except lingering habits based on Japanese-market patterns. Versus might well be too far in to really futz with, but going forward I think there is basically no chance Square-Enix will follow an exclusive strategy for FF titles.

I see what you are saying, but we had a trailer last year, and if they had any plans to scrap it trust me it would have been by now.

Hell one of the updates last years talked about how Nomura played through the full world map, towns, dungeons, everything.

Would they really scrap it now that they have the whole damn game in engine already?

FFXIV is already confirmed for E3 ;)

Hopefully we can get a date on that.

I was under the impression that XIII-2 did pretty bad in every market, sales wise. Besides the ending of XIII-2, why the hell would Square go through with XIII-3? Hasn't XIII tarnished the series' name enough? I (and many others) wouldn't be surprised if they renamed Versus XIII to XV at this point to try and shed that negative stigma.

XIII-3 just doesn't make sense to me at this point. Is Square just made up of a bunch of fucking trolls? Or am I just reading this wrong and they're making money off these games?

They are making money no doubt, but it isn't anything super huge.

Sales are way down compared to the first, and they will be even lower if they go ahead and do a third.

Wow, I honestly didn't know that. That makes me feel a bit better.

Something like TLG can present a lot of challenges, but with this game it's unlikely that its delayed because of that. I think they were concentrating on other projects and developing Versus slowly. They even said last year that the game will enter full production "soon".

From September 2011:

The other day, Nomura did a walkthrough on the entire world map. He also checked the game’s dungeons and side areas in the towns. He was amazed at how wide and impressive everything was.

FINAL FANTASY Versus XIII uses parts of the Luminous Studio engine (Square-Enix’s next generation development engine), specifically the lighting technology. The game’s lighting has been redone, as Versus aims for photo realism. Luminous is important here because it does well with such things.

He notes that the game uses a game specific engine that’s utilized for action. Luminous Engine has been added to this as well. Nomura says that Luminous itself is a very strong engine that can be used in any game. The engine for FINAL FANTASY Versus XIII has strengths in certain areas, but cannot be used as a general engine.

Of course, with that, Nomura promises a FINAL FANTASY like you’ve never seen before.

You know...it's really weird that they put so much effort into salvaging FF XIV.

Anyone else in the industry would abandon ship.

Absolutely agreed. I can't believe they are trying to salvage the game. Like I mentioned at some point in that other super long FF thread I decided to give it a try starting last week because it's so cheap and the first 30 days are free what I am playing now is actually pretty fun and has made changes to feel more like a modern MMO. Which is cool and all but...

I am not sure there is a point, I can't see how they can turn it into something profitable. Perhaps they are hoping to launch the PS3 version and get everyone with an interest to come back for 2.0, but who knows. I know 11 was profitable without having the biggest player base so perhaps in the long term (5+ years down the line after expansions and all those monthly bills) 14 could do something similar.
